HISTORY

In the early years of twentieth century, Mr. N.R. Gupta, an engineer in the coalmines of

West Bengal was perplexed with the complexities and safety hazards faced by the miners

due to leakage of water in the coalmines. He realized that a miner's task would be far

safer and simpler, had there been a solution to prevent leakage of water through the rock

pores.

Driven to work on this premise, he formulated special chemical additives that could alter

the properties of mortar and concrete. The initial success of his formulae spurred him on

to develop various specialty chemicals and systems that would eventually go on to

become benchmarks of concrete improving techniques under the brand of "CICO".

Seven decades and three generations later, we, at CICO, continue to march ahead in our

pursuit of excellence.

CICO Technologies Limited is a trusted name in the construction chemicals and

waterproofing industry in the country. So much so that the brand is synonymous with the

Construction Chemical sector.

CICO Technologies Limited owes its unprecedented growth, international foray, further

product developments, retail thrusts, financial restructuring and e-commerce initiatives to

Mr. Amit Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director.

Under a reorganisation of the family business, Mr. Gupta was given some brands under

the group and has virtually re-built the enterprise – both in terms of additional product

lines and turnover.

To address the issue of finances and risk capital to fuel expansion and overseas forays,

CTL got its funding from the UK government's Commonwealth Development

Corporation presently Actis, that too in the form of equity, instead of turning to the

traditional sources of finances. It ensured representation of professionals on the board of

CTL and scientific approach to initiatives in areas like project finance, new product

launches and overseas forays.

The company also successfully secured the 9001 Series certification as per the norms set

by the International Standards Organization.

Industry studies and research showed that only five percent of India’s concrete – used in

the construction industry – contains Construction Chemicals, compared with 80 percent

in developed countries. But CTL has always seen this as a potential and not as a hurdle. It

has overcome the lack or the paucity of knowledge about waterproofing and use of
construction chemicals with constant interactions with civil engineering firms and

contractors through media and training of masons at different retail levels.

The company is now executing a major expansion in the Gulf region and is setting up a

joint venture with Aljabor Trading of Qatar for a manufacturing unit in Doha, Qatar.

Distributor networks in Nepal, Srilanka and Bangladesh have also been established.

CICO’s products have been developed after extensive discussions with customers under

most stringent conditions. The core portfolio comprises of waterproofing, sealants,

admixtures & water proofing chemicals to provide best solutions for construction

industry.
