Day in and day out the staff at the shelter is making a difference in the lives of the
women and children they serve. Listening without judgment, inquiring with
empathy, supporting, valuing, respecting each life that comes through the door – all
are done with courtesy and kindness. What could be more reflective of the
behavior we would all like to see in our everyday lives? To me, Advocates’ staff
members are at the foundation of making our community a better place to live.
Each person served at The Advocates is granted the power to express herself, to
choose for herself, to make her own plan for the future in a safe and supportive environment. How does the community
benefit? Women who learn a measure of self-reliance can do a better job of caring for themselves and their children, they
make better employees, and they strengthen the community through personally refusing to accept violent behavior.

At A Place for Kids, the staff provides child-care in the same nurturing spirit. From the very youngest ages, children see
the adults in their lives treat them with respect and loving care. We are grateful also to The Attic for supporting families
through affordable furniture and clothing that can make an independent life possible.

Staff work is only made possible through your generous support. Our deepest thanks go to the many volunteers and donors
who recognize the vital contribution The Advocates makes to the health and well-being of our community. With each of us
giving of our individual talents and resources, we can jointly make a world of difference.

Financial Report
Due to the very charitable and generous nature of the Wood River Valley community, The Advocates was able to meet its
2003-2004 operating budget goal of $460,000. During the fiscal year, funds were also raised to complete start-up of a Place
for Kids child care center. In January 2004, the Board of Directors also launched an 18 month campaign to raise money for
our endowment. Successful grant writing efforts also contributed funds to the operating budget, A Place for Kids and the
endowment.

Fund raising efforts included the “Carnival” event, a direct mail donation request to the community, and the sale of the Sun
Valley Celebrities & Local Heroes Cookbook, Second Edition. During the year The Advocates also benefited from events put
on by other organizations and individuals including a production of The Vagina Monologues produced by Dana Dugan and
Page Klune, Kids Day America sponsored by Quantum Chiropractic/Maria Maricich, and complimentary booths at the Arts &
Crafts Festival put on by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, the Ketchum Art Festival, and the St. Thomas Episcopal Church
Alternative Gift Fair.

Start-up funds for the Advocates’ new community child care project, A Place for Kids, were donated by the Good Works
Institute, Inc., Priscilla Woods, L & H Foundation, The Julie Wrigley Foundation, Elise B. Lufkin and the Dr. E.R. and Edna
Wattis Dumke Philanthropic Gift Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation as requested by Ed & Sue Dumke. Donated funds
were used to complete physical improvements needed to bring the child care center up to building and licensing codes and
purchase supplies, furniture, and equipment.

Successful grants or contracts for services were awarded by the Deer Creek Fund, Joan Leidy Foundation, Blaine County, City
of Ketchum, Idaho State Police through the STOP Violence Against Women Act, Idaho Housing and Finance Association—
Emergency Shelter Grant, Idaho Council on Domestic Violence & Victim Assistance, Idaho Community Foundation, and
Doors of Hope: Food for Survival—Altria Group. A generous employee gift matching grant was made by The Capital Group
Companies Charitable Foundation. Please refer to page 5 for a complete list of contributors during the fiscal year. The overall

From the Executive Director . . .
In March of this year, the Board of Directors held its annual planning retreat. Each spring we meet to review the activities
of the last year and set new goals for the coming year which is based on a fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. The president
of the board prepared a “State of the Organization” presentation which reviewed the last 5-10 years of activity. In
summary, we realized that the organization was emerging from a period of ongoing expansion. Each year since our
incorporation in 1992 a major fund raising or services expansion project was completed starting with the publication of the
first edition of the Sun Valley Celebrity & Local Heroes Cookbook and culminating in the opening of A Place for Kids child
care center and the Advocates’ Attic second hand store in 2003. This expansion was driven by the continued increase in
demand for services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children. Each year, The Advocates has
experienced a 10-25% increase in the use of its key services combined. In addition, there is an ongoing demand for
increased community education/awareness each year to further efforts to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault in
our Valley.

Due to the increasing demand for The Advocates services and continued expansion in response to this demand, at the retreat
we decided to discuss how fast we should grow and how large our organization should become given fund raising limits and
organizational capacity. Meeting community needs requires money and we have to recognize our limits and abilities to
meet these needs. We agreed that as a nonprofit we must act responsibly and maintain a sustainable level of growth and
service provision. In general, the critical services required to address community needs are in place despite the constantly
increasing demand for assistance. We hope to be able to meet these needs over the next few years without any major
expansion. We plan to concentrate on our existing programs and further develop quality of services and staff expertise and
efficiency. At the same time we will need to work hard not to compromise the current quality of our services by placing
unrealistic expectations on staff regarding their workloads. We will also focus on solidifying our financial base through
fund raising for the endowment and increasing fund raising and grant writing efforts.

We are full swing into our new fiscal year and as busy as ever with twelve women, eight children, three dogs, two cats, a
guinea pig and a hamster in shelter. Therefore, regardless of the above challenges and limitations, we will continue our
hard work and dedication to providing victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with the resources needed for safety,
empowerment and prevention of further victimization. We appreciate the ongoing generous support from the community in
the form of cash and non-cash contributions, in-kind donations, and volunteer time. We pledge to put these contributions to
good charitable work. In the spirit of working towards a better world . . .
