UNIVERSITY OF BATH

s Introduction

The University of Bath is understandably proud of its modern, world-class, multi-sport facilities
which come with a team of support staff who understand performance sport.

Unique because they are almost entirely clustered under one roof, the facilities at the University
of Bath and, in particular, its Sports Training Village (STV) form the perfect environment for
training camps and event preparation.

Experienced in providing for sports organisations and their teams on the eve of major events, we
understand the positive psychological and physical input that a good pre-event camp can generate.

We can help you provide the perfect launch pad for maximum performance on the world’s
greatest sporting stages. The STV offers a compact site that is characterised by excellence in
delivery. Our facilities have already been accredited as capable of hosting more than 20
sports by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

We offer adjacent, conference-standard accommodation and the City of Bath, as a world

heritage site, is a stunning backdrop against which to train and prepare and relax when
needed. The city is renowned for its safe and pleasant environment with stunning architecture
and beautiful surrounding countryside.

We have already hosted a number of teams preparing for single sport major events and our
multi-sport capacity on site is considerable. There are additional options to use even further
provision – all within a mile of the STV.

We always take the time to listen to potential facility-users and plan comprehensively for their
needs whilst maintaining the flexibility to respond to last-minute requests.

This brochure is designed to give an idea of how our facilities can be configured for multi-sport
use. If you would like more details for a multi-sport or single-sport situation please don’t
hesitate to call us or arrange a visit.

The Sports Training Village

Sports Training Village

The heart and hub of activity during any event or training camp held at the University of Bath
is our world-class Sports Training Village (STV). For training camp and event purposes we
can configure our sports spaces, generic fitness areas and back-of-house offices in a variety
of ways.

At Appendix 1B we offer a potential multi-sport configuration

of the facilities which shows our extensive capabilities. At
Appendix 1A we show the STV facilities in their present
configuration.

In order to offer space to the maximum number of sports we

can, for instance, create a sub-division of the four internal
sports halls. In addition, we could – subject to agreement
on costs – lay down a wooden floor in the existing indoor
Indoor Tennis Hall
tennis hall, making this a hugely flexible space.

In the example configuration at Appendix 1B we show a

lay-out that offers the ability for handball, basketball,
taekwondo and wrestling in the tennis hall whilst still
reserving two indoor courts for tennis itself. We can also
offer external clay courts and could create grass-courts in
the immediate vicinity of the STV.

In this mode, table tennis, volleyball and badminton would

be located in the largest sports hall of the STV.

The existing modern pentathlon area would be used for

pentathlon itself and fencing and pistol shooting.

STV Main Hall

The University’s 50m Pool

The 8-lane 50m swimming pool would be available to

swimming, triathlon and modern pentathlon with the
occasional lane for other sports who may wish to use
swimming as part of their fitness or tapering regime.

Track and field athletics would have use of the

outdoor and indoor tracks and throws/jumps options.
For endurance athletes there are also running trails
that start at the STV and offer miles of good terrain for
training.

Indoor 150m Sprint Straight

Our judo dojo would be sport-specific and used only
for the judo squad but with a timetabled option to add
some squad-based sessions for team sports’ stretching
and core stability work.

We have recently completed construction of an

outdoor beach volleyball centre but can provide
indoor beach volleyball options if needed.

Our STV already has a good-sized strength and

conditioning area. However we also have additional
free-weights platforms in the throws and jumps hall as
well as stretching and warm-up zones. The state-of-the-art Fitness Suite

Running alongside the sports café in the heart of the STV, we have a large terrace area
overlooking the outdoor athletics track. For major teams and groups this space could be
adapted as an area for 1000 square metres of fixed-tenting, called the Olympic Pavilion, in
which areas could be created for storage, stretching, dining and team manager work areas
with high speed internet access.

Further secure storage can be made available at track level for heavy-duty equipment. We can
also provide a workshop zone with tools for equipment repair if requested.

Finally, the STV houses our sports science and medicine centre which incorporates treatment
areas and laboratories of a high specification.

Arts Barn

The arts barn theatre, an integral part of the complex, can be used for sports such as
weightlifting, with some adaptations, and also for team briefings and media conferences.

The Founders Hall

Founders Hall and 25m Pool

Our Founders Hall, within 200m of the STV, has a sprung-wood floor and could be adapted
for a number of sports including gymnastics and trampolining. We are currently investigating
the provision of pits for artistic gymnastics but can easily offer the level of space required by
rhythmic gymnastics. The complex also has a 25m pool that can be used for tapering and
fitness or relaxation.

University Hall

Within 200m of the STV, we are currently investigating an adaptation of this hall to
accommodate all the training needs for sports like boxing, including a ring and punch-bag
areas. Although there is also an option to place this sport in the Sulis Club – a mile from the STV.

Outdoor Facilities

In the example lay-out at Appendix 1B, two indoor courts

would be reserved for tennis in the case of inclement weather.
The University would wish to provide outdoor grass-courts
within the immediate area of the STV, especially in the lead-up
to the 2012 Olympic Games.

We can also provide two grass football pitches, two artificial

hockey pitches (we have recently upgraded one of these to
sand-dressed and have the desire to add a water-based pitch
or similar), an archery range and two outdoor and recently-
constructed beach volleyball courts.
Hockey action (The Bath Chronicle)
There are a number of excellent equestrian facilities within
20-40 minutes driving distance of the University for the
equestrian sports and disciplines. These include Badminton
House for three-day eventing.

However, the University has also opened a dialogue with the

neighbouring farm (300m from the STV) about the potential
for providing riding stables and training arenas if needed.

Accommodation and Team Embassy or Lodge

The University is currently completing

construction of an accommodation
block adjacent to the STV and
containing 353 conference-standard
and en-suite bedrooms. This would be
the main accommodation area for
future training camps and events as it is
within two minutes walk of the STV itself
and this could be securely fenced and
perimeter-managed.
The new R5 accommodation

In addition the University is aware that separate accommodation provision may be needed for
senior personnel, sponsors and other VIP guests connected with visting teams and groups. The
Bath Spa Hotel, Combe Grove Manor Hotel (1.1 miles from the STV) and other local hotels
offer excellence in provision. These hotels are also versed in the needs of visiting sports teams
and Bath is a highly-desirable tourist destination making it an attractive venue for sponsor and
VIP entertainment which can be separated from the team activity at the camp.

For athletes, staff, family and friends who may need a meeting point and relaxation area close
to, but not within, the STV, we can establish other areas on campus or look to using facilities
such as nearby hotels and museums who have flexible event and entertainment spaces.

1b. Potential Enhancements

In order to accommodate the needs of major multi-sport groups on training camp, the STV
could be enhanced and reconfigured in order to offer maximum efficiency for a broad range
of sports in the following way (see below). However, any such enhancements or different
configurations would be the subject of detailed discussions with potential facility-users so that
we can look at offering exactly what is required.

TENNIS HALL
Our tennis hall could be modified by the installation of a sprung-wood floor covering all except
two of the eight tennis courts. This would then offer space for simultaneous training for five sports:

Taekwondo – one mat area, 12x12m with separate, adjacent 10x5m area for kicking bags
Wrestling – one 12x12m mat area with correct markings
Handball – two courts, side by side
Tennis – two courts, side by side
Basketball – two courts, side by side.

This is a well-lit, air conditioned area set at a constant temperature of 16 degrees with ample
height and lighting for all the listed sports.

INDOOR ATHLETICS SPRINT STRAIGHT

Can double as indoor archery in inclement weather.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL (Indoors)

We can modify some indoor spaces to create indoor training areas for beach volleyball.

ARTS BARN
There is the potential here to install lifting platforms for weightlifting.

13
www.teambath.com
detailed site information

UNIVERSITY HALL/SULIS CLUB

In order to create boxing facilities on site,
as mentioned earlier in this document, the
University Hall and Sulis Club both offer
flexible space in which to install a
temporary boxing ring with additional
University Hall
sparring, weights and punch-bag areas.

FOUNDERS HALL
The University can investigate the installation of pits for artistic gymnastics training in this hall.

OUTDOOR AREAS
An area of grass-courts for tennis, adjacent to the northern side of the outdoor athletics track,
lying between the track and the accommodation areas, could be created.

EQUESTRIAN FACILITIES
Whilst our document has already listed three equestrian centres within 30-40 minutes drive of
the STV, we could open a dialogue with the adjacent farm (300m from the STV) to explore the
possibility of stabling and training arenas there.

THE OLYMPIC PAVILION

The existing, wide balcony area between the STV café and the outdoor running track offers
an ideal location, within the heart of any large-scale training camp, for over 1000sqm of
fixed-side tenting. This adaptable space would be used to create a comfortable Olympic
village-style dining facility (where menus will be compiled in association with nutritional
advisors and to the highest standards of food hygiene), additional massage and stretching
areas, storage facilities and a work-room for team managers.

SPORTS SCIENCE & MEDICINE FACILITIES

Additional treatment areas in the Founders Hall complex would be considered for very large
sports groups, using the squash courts. Existing cryotherapy and hypoxic capabilities could be
extended. Robust links already exist with the Bath Clinic (private hospital within 1.3miles of
the STV) for scanning and other treatments and with the Royal United Hospital (RUH) for a
whole range of services. The RUH (3.5 miles from STV) has an Accident and Emergency Unit.
Consideration could be given to the location of temporary mobile scanning facilities on site
with internet video links to leading specialists world-wide for review and advice where
needed. An additional ice bath area could be created to extend existing provision.

14
www.teambath.com
detailed site information

ATHLETE “CHILL” ZONE

As all catering could be delivered from the Olympic Pavilion for large groups, the existing
Sports Training Village café could be transformed into a comfortable area for athletes to “chill
out” and socialise. This could include an internet and games zone.

SECURITY FENCING AND STORAGE

Should heightened security be required on-site, this could be created with minimal additional
fencing, to establish a private zone to include accommodation blocks, training facilities and
dining areas. The only access to the STV complex would, therefore, be via the front reception
of the STV building. Avon and Wiltshire constabulary have already been consulted as part of
our planning processes for major events and camps.

Secure storage would also be offered at track level adjacent to the 400m oval, including
containers for triathlon bikes and other equipment/kit. There would also be an option to create
a small workshop in a container in this zone.

OFFICE SPACE
In addition to the team managers’ and support staff working room (with high-speed
broadband internet access including wireless capabilities) we would consider making use of
some of the existing suite of University of Bath Sports Development Department back-of-house
offices in the heart of the building. The Department’s operational staff would then relocate
temporarily during a major event or training camp.

MEETING ROOMS
Team and sports’ meeting rooms would be
offered by using some of the current EIS and
tennis centre office facilities within the building
combined with the board-room and STV lecture
room 1. If further rooms were required, these
would be available on the main campus in 6 East
– immediately opposite the STV main reception.
STV Meeting Room

MEDIA CENTRE, ACCESS AND CONTROL

Major visiting teams are often inevitably the centre of significant media attention in the lead-
up to the major events, especially the Olympic Games. To help create positive PR whilst
controlling media access to the site, the University would explore the potential for a media
work room, interview rooms and press conference facility in 6 East which, whilst being
immediately opposite the entrance to the STV, would be outside the security zone. This building
has the same high-speed internet capabilities as the STV. Access to the STV for the media
would then be under the control of the visiting team in conjunction with STV staff.
Arrangements can then be made for media catering in one of the existing main campus
food outlets.

The City of Bath is a photogenic destination with good film and photo opportunities being
offered by the Thermae Bath Spa rooftop, the Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent and Circus.

15
www.teambath.com
detailed site information

RECREATIONAL AREAS
Additional use of recreational areas on the main campus will be considered in the overall
planning for major events and training camps. This could include regular theatre and film
activities as well as access to the library and music practice rooms. There are also a number of
cafes and relaxation areas on campus (however, please note media access paragraph above).

FUNCTION ROOMS
Should a team and/or related organisation wish to host a private dinner or reception during
the time of their visit, there are ample facilities on campus as well as buildings such as the
Pump Rooms, the Assembly Rooms, the Roman Baths and the Guildhall as well as the new
Thermae Bath Spa. As a world heritage city we have an inspirational backdrop.

PUBLIC & OTHER ACCESS

We can foresee the facilities of the STV being closed to the public during major events and
training camps. The centre is currently also used by a number of elite athletes who will be
striving to qualify for TeamGB for 2012 and other events. Arrangements for their continuing
access to the building would be the subject of detailed negotiations.

OFF-SITE ACCOMMODATION & EXCURSIONS

The University can work actively with local hoteliers and tradesmen to create favourable
conditions for visiting sports teams (and connected personnel – e.g. sponsor companies) to
access the city’s and the region’s amenities. Advance briefing and coordination would ensure
that any offers of help would be tailored to the needs of the athletes and team officials and
would not be intrusive.

TEAM EMBASSY OR LODGE

As mentioned in our earlier summary, the University would seek to work with large visiting
groups and teams to create a nearby area where family, friends and team members could
relax. The American Museum, situated approximately 0.75 miles from the STV, would seem
the ideal location for this. More modest facilities could also be provided at the Sulis club or
other function rooms on the campus and in the centre of the city.

TRANSPORT & PARKING

Ample parking exists on site for cars and minibuses/other team vehicles. A regular bus
service (every 6-10 minutes on average) departs for, and arrives from, the city-centre. This
service is provided in a fleet of modern and comfortable public buses.

Arrangements can be made with local car-hire and bus companies to run excursions or
provide other private transport.

Bath is connected to London by an express train network with a journey time of 90 minutes
between the two at a frequency for most of the day of one train every 30 minutes. There are
also good road links to London and Bristol airports.

16

BEING YOUR HOST

Whilst the University of Bath Sports Development Department already has experience of
hosting a wide variety of national and international teams and events on site, we know that
the needs of every team and group will be unique and will, therefore, require a unique level
of resources.

We will listen carefully to your needs and plan the details with you in advance. We will also
put flexibility into our systems to be responsive to new situations as they arise.

ELITE DISABLED AND PARALYMPIC GROUPS

The University of Bath has a track-record of supporting elite athletes with a disability.
Therefore, virtually all the detail in this document applies to this group of athletes. We can
also offer space for Paralympic-specific sports such as goalball and boccia.

Major parts of the Sports Training Village are fully-accessible and use can be made of the
majority of the facilities listed above. Detailed advance discussions can ensure that
expectations are met for this group of athletes. On campus there are circa 110 accessible
bedrooms. However these are not clustered in one area and care would be needed in locating
and organising on-site accommodation..

We will create a “can-do”, customer-oriented environment

whilst being as unobtrusive as possible.
