Ladycats start season with convincing wins

Aledo Ladycats junior guard
Kelcie Childs was consumed with
sadness as tears streaked down her
face after a five-match loss to the
Canyon-Randall Lady Raiders in
the Div. II-4A volleyball Regional
Tournament.
But those tears eventually dried
and Childs was back in uniform the
next day on her home court playing
basketball. And just to prove she
had gotten over that volleyball loss,
the 5’6” player wearing No. 10 leapt
beneath the left side of the basket
and gently lifted the ball for a layup
with 4.2 seconds on the clock for the
final basket of the game.
The final bucket helped the
Ladycats defeat the visiting Decatur
Lady Eagles 59-40 and gave Aledo
a win for their home opener of the
2010-2011 season.
“We’re going to spread the floor
and we’re going to attack off the
dribble,” Aledo Head Coach Rusty
Johnson said after the Nov. 13 vic-
tory. “I think that when we get after
it defensively, you’ll see us go into
spurts offensively.”
The Ladycats wasted no time in
getting points on the board early.
Senior guard Logan Mittie shot a
three-pointer two-minutes and 47-
seconds into the first quarter to give
Aledo its first field goal of the sea-
son.
Decatur, who initially moved
fast on defense, which in turned
pressured the Ladycats into having
inconsistent passes, crawled back to

“Everyone did really well,” Tallant
said. “I think around the end of the

we normally do.”
Tallant finished the game with

The shots kept on coming and
the points began to collect for the
Ladycats. Aledo kept Decatur at nine
points almost halfway through the
second quarter until the Lady Eagles
scored two-points with 4:37 on the
clock making the score 24-11.
Aledo was beginning to get into a
groove on offense completing passes
consistently and keeping a steady pace,
but it was the team’s defense, which at
one point held a 30-13 lead, that was
showing signs of inconsistency.
“Conditioning, still, I think is a
part of it,” Johnson said. “It’s some-
thing we can certainly address at
practice. I think we did get fatigued
a little bit.”
