comments in the FCC's proceeding on the Future of Media and
Information Needs of Communities in the Digital Age. Joined
by 32 national and regional organizations from throughout the
country, the comments ask the Federal Communication
Commission (FCC) to examine hate speech in media.

The Future of Media proceeding was designed to assess


whether all Americans have access to vibrant, diverse sources
of news and information that will enable them to enrich their
lives, their communities and our democracy. In its
comments, NHMC reinforces the need for the FCC to act on
NHMC's petition for inquiry on hate speech in media filed in
January of 2009. An inquiry allows people across the country
to voice their concerns on an issue in a public docket.
NHMC's petition for inquiry urges the Commission to examine
the extent and effects of hate speech in media, including the
likely link between hate speech and hate crimes, and to
explore non-regulatory ways in which to counteract its
negative impacts. For over a year now, the FCC has failed to
address NHMC's concerns on this very serious and important
issue. In the mean time, countless people have suffered
violent, and sometimes deadly, hate crimes. Hate, extremism
and misinformation have been on the rise, and even more so
in the past week as some around the nation have spread hate
through media in response to Arizona's passage of one of the
harshest pieces of anti-Latino legislation in this country's
history, SB 1070. Indeed, hate crimes against the Latino
community have risen over 40% in just the past few years.

The Big Winner
at the 2008 Tony's is now Moises ("Moe" to his friends) is going through the

to be had. And there are friends and family, so there's lots of
love, too. Moe just insists that his approaching death will be
as fabulous as his life.

This play is performed in English. There are several


songs performed in Spanish.

This play was originally produced in 2002, when it


won the GLAAD Award for Outstanding Los Angeles Theatre
Production. It also received four Ovation Award nominations.
The play has lost none of its timeliness.

Director Jose Luis Valenzuela is the Artistic Director of the


Latino Theater Company and a Professor at UCLA's MFA
Directing program. His amazingly prolific career includes
credits both in Europe ("Peer Gynt," "Kiss of the Spider
Woman") and the U.S. (the stage and screen versions of
"Luminarias" and "How Else Am I Supposed to Know I'm Still
Alive?"; collaborations with Culture Clash including "Carpa
Clash," "Radio Mambo," "A Bowl of Beings,' the last of which
was also filmed for PBS ' Great Performances; "Melancholia,"
"Bandido!," "Hijos," "Solitude," "August 29th," "La Victima,"
"Roosters," "The Promise," and so much more).

Playwright Evelina Fernandez is a Humanitas finalist


and scripted the Latino Theater Company's famed annual
Christmas pageant, La Virgen De Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin,"
as well as the recent acclaimed hit "Solitude," an L.A. Times
Critic's Choice. Several of her other plays also transitioned to
film including "Luminarias," and "Premeditation." Also an
actor, she has had recurring roles on several TV series,
including "Roseanne," "Judging Amy," and "City of Angels."

The cast of the new production of "Dementia" includes, in


alphabetical order, Ralph Cole Jr., Danny De La Paz, Evelina
Fernandez, Esperanza America Ibarra, Sal Lopez, Geoffrey
Rivas and Lucy Rodriguez.
