"The highest ideal of cure is the rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health."
- Dr. Samuel Hahnemann
The safest, fastest, most economical way out of here is this 5-phase protocol :
1. Meals aimed at all the 4 root causes of a deficient immune system; neo-
scientifically.
2. Lifestyle that doesn't let your environment impair your immune defense &
other organs
3. Body freed from chemicals which damage your immune organs
4. Fitness routine that delivers the energy, oxygenation, hormones, circulation,
etc. necessary to kill infections
5. Mind aware of blind-spots; emotions gliding over pitfalls
Once rectified, they are the weapons you need in this life-long warfare; sooner the
better.
One ignores this generalization to their own peril. I know that you may have tried
many things & here you are. It's encouraging that you are taking it as a loud &
clear call for upstating your diet and lifestyle in order to reform & refurbish your bio-
logic infrastructure.
The bigger the problem, the more drastic a shift required. So with your mortal
enemies now locked in your radar, are you all set to... Fire!?
5
Since there's much more to diet than a bunch of nutrients, blood-typing, chewing
each morsel till it's liquified, washing away the pesticides from the surfaces of non-
organic vegetables, keeping yourself hydrated, etc., we'll start with a preliminary list
of don'ts (what not to eat):
Eliminate :
1. All non-vegitarian foods including seafoods e.g. oysters (seaweeds are highly
recommended),
5. Yeast based foods (baked breads & cakes); try yeast-free breads (eg. millet
bread).
8. Coffee,
9. Chocolate,
10. Alcohol,
11. Smoking / tobacco,
12. Refined sugar (use molasses, stevia, jaggery powder, palm sugar etc.),
13. Corn syrup, HFC.,
Minimize :
Labeling syndrome :
Learning how to read the nutrition labels on the foods you buy is tricky because most
of the times we need to investigate further what is behind all the surface information
we are given.
MSG :
You may want to check the updated list of products with hydrolyzed vegetable
protein which were recalled: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/HVPCP
8
PLEASE READ THIS LIST - Names of ingredients that often contain or produce
processed free glutamic acid:
Carrageenan (E 407)
Bouillon and broth
Stock
Whey protein, Whey protein concentrate
Whey protein isolate
Any “flavors” or “flavoring”
Maltodextrin
Citric acid (E 330)
Anything “ultra-pasteurized”
Barley malt
Pectin (E 440)
Protease
Anything “enzyme modified”
Anything containing “enzymes”
Malt extract
Soy sauce
Soy sauce extract
Soy protein, Soy protein concentrate, Soy protein isolate
Anything “protein fortified”
Anything “fermented”
Seasonings.
In general, your nutrients should come from the actual foods (not even food extracts)
otherwise they will further complicate matters by leaving behind imbalances & food-
processing agents.
But before you start eating them, we need to zoom into the other 4 phases of this
immunity-priming protocol. So that, together, they'll bring down all the root causes of
bad immunity.
Thus, adopting the above list is just a starting point towards designing a delightful
pro-life diet. The last chapter of this road-map summarizes what's critically missing.
For e.g., a diet based on individual's blood type has worked only for about 50% of
the people. If your blood type matters then, extending that logic further may convince
you that the rest of your body also matters; actually much more.
9
As a matter of fact your mental & emotional personality also plays an integral part in
determining your diet. That's what neo-scientific profiling is about. The 2nd leverage
of the book “7 Leverages of Nutritional Alchemy” does that for you.
It's an essential step in your effort to build up sturdy organs because only if the
microvita profile of you foods tallies with that of your microvita constitution – will there
be a perfect match.
Once you take up MicroVita SuperDiet, you'll start by building your own master-list of
foods based on all the 7 leverages including your psycho-physical microvita profile.
Besides unwanted chemicals, non-organic foods (vegetables, fruits, etc.) are also
contaminated with hormones . MicroVita SuperDiet facilitates a way to easily get
organic foods at a cost that is less than what one pays for non-organic foods.
Perhaps you know that these days even “organic” doesn't always mean “safe”. I have
myself bought organic produce which turned out to be dead. They have many other
problems as well.
Whichever way you look at it, M----V---- S----D--- seems to be your best foot forward.
10
Reinventing your daily life-style by expunging the bum portions listed below will
harmonize it in tune with the life-supportive elements :
Use natural alternatives e.g. virgin coconut oil as moisturizer & sun
screen. Add essential oils for desired smell.
4. All artificial perfumes (they deposit phthalates in your body, most of which never
comes out)
5. Artificial hair dyes (hazardous chemicals diffuse through your scalp)
6. Heavy-metals e.g. nickle, cast away by costume jewelry including sterling silver
(they permeate through your skin)
11
7. City tap-water supply (including fluoridated & chlorinated water & the pipes that
carry them)
8. Heavy metals in faulty showers, old faucets, old metal water filters
9. Drinking liquids stored in plastic containers (BPA / BiPhenyl-A)
10. Cooking in microwave ovens
11. Cooking / storing foods in non-stick (Teflon, Tefal etc), aluminium, chromium
cookware
14. Washing powders & cleaning agents (emanate artificial aromatic amines)
17. Neighborhood pollution (quality of air, noise, living area, workplace, aircon
recirculation, commute, toilet de-odorizers, room air fresheners etc.)
Please take the time & avail of the opportunity to summarily stop the ongoing
onslaught upon you from these immunity-debilitating environmental poisons.
They cause many serious troubles for e.g. : Disrupt the functioning of your master
gland (pineal) thus impair the entire endocrine system - melatonin synthesis,
defective thyroids, adrenal exhaustion, etc.
Saddled with the crap spotlighted in the last few pages, how do you plan to
restore your biological purity?
A one-off exhaustive purification exercise would neither be practical nor advisable for
anyone.
So a better approach would entail starting with a few of these & keep on carrying out
more of them until you expunge enough of the self-annihilating junk. In concert with
the rest of the phases, this will reestablish your prestine level of health & well-being;
may be even better.
Buy some sunflower or sesame oil (say 500 ml / 16 ounces), preferably unrefined.
• In the morning without brushing teeth take one tablespoon (two tea
spoons=10ml) of sesame oil in the mouth on empty stomach. Close the mouth.
Do not swallow.
• Chin up, rinse mouth to ensure oil sweeps over the entire oral cavity - between
all the teeth, on palate including soft palate near throat, and both ear end
corners of oral cavity.
• Do it mindfully non-stop (alongwith your morning routine).
• Spit when the mouth gets full or between 15 to 20 minutes.
• Wash your mouth and teeth thoroughly. You may scrub your teeth & gums
with fingers ideally; after washing your hands. Toothbrushes tend to peel the
enamel & hurt the gums. Do scrape your tongue with a metallic tongue scraper
and then wash the mouth thoroughly.
• Drink two or three glasses of water.
The process traps all the oral pathogens in the oil. It also detoxifies the blood &
benefits in few other ways (e.g. acupressure).
“...up to three times a day on an empty stomach," Dr Karsch, Ukraine – who revived
oil-pulling in our times.
14
“The tongue is an indicator of what is going on in the body. A fiery red tongue depicts
an irritated digestion; a pale shade, low digestion; and a purple tongue, a liver
burdened with toxics" - Dr R. Ballantyne, who has studied Ayurveda and Chinese
medicine.
The tongue maps all our organs – different sections of the tongue are connected to
the kidneys, lungs, spleen, liver, heart, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon,
and spine.
CHELATION THERAPIES : to get rid of heavy metals & other accumulated poisons.
B. Eat fresh coriander leaves & stem – raw - on empty stomach everyday to
chelate Mercury*. Coriander also helps to dissolve kidney stones.
If you have been exposed to Bromides, Mercury, Lead, Aluminum, or are dependent
upon antibiotics to fight off parasites then consider Potassium iodide (KI) as
medicinal tablets, typically 130 mg / tablet, of which 100 mg is iodine (as iodide).
12.5 mg to 50 mg i.e. 1/8th to ½ tablet / day should be fine to start with. [20]
Which means 1 drop in a cup of distilled water taken over 1 - 4 days will delive 12.5
mg – 50 mg.
Results of a 3 months test with 12.5 mg per day of the tablet form of Lugol solution
(Iodoral®) :
• In some subjects, the urine levels of mercury, lead and cadmium increased by
several fold after just one day of supplementation.
• For aluminum, this increased excretion was not observed usually until after
one month or more on the iodine supplementation.
• Improved overall well being reported by the subjects.
• Lifting of “brain fog,” feeling warmer in cold environments, increased energy,
needing less sleep, achieving more in less time, experiencing regular bowel
movements and improved skin complexion.
• A detoxification reaction was experienced by some patients with high bromide
levels in form of cloudy urine.
• The released bromide from storage sites induced low thyroid function. If the
loading test provokes high urine bromide levels, it is best to start the patient on
a low dose of iodine (1/2 to 1 tablet Iodoral®).
Borax / sodium borate is the precursor for sodium perborate monohydrate, which is
available as a cleaning agent in some countries (e.g. under Persil brand). It is
poisonous in large quantities (same level of toxicity as common salt).
Recommended dosage :
1/8 teaspoon of borax diluted in 1 liter / quart / 32 ounces of water taken in divided
dose throughout the day (say 2 - 4 portions).
Take it for 4 or 5 days in a week. For a few weeks to several months atmost,
depending on your level of tolerance.
1 day only eat lots of fresh green leafy vegetables grown LOCALLY in rain water
(during the rainy season). No juicing please. You may combine it with the coriander
routine above.
They should be raw. In lack of rain water irrigation go for commercially sold MSM
powder.
1 day only eat lots of Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage & other Brassicas – both
vegetables & sprouts. They should be raw. No juicing.
1 day only eat raw Spinach, Broccoli & Pea. No juicing. Eat with steamed brown
Rice.
Eat some foods rich in Vitamin C during the day. Take it for atmost 5 consecutive
days in a week. Women can do well with just 1/8 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate.
A thorough full body detox is a good place to start to clean-up the decaying debris. It
constitutes:
2. Dental rework : if you have any mercury / amalgams or other poisonous dental
fillings, get them replaced. http://curezone.com/dental/default.asp
3. Kidney sweep : 1 day only eat raw watermelons. No juicing. Say about 100
kgs of whole fruits.
Keeping the body hydrated is necessary to remove as much toxins and poisons as
possible from all the organs and tissues. Scrubbing the skin with a dried vegetable
fibrous brush - loofa / loofah / luffa sponge [23] – also facilitates detox via sweating.
The 3 phases delineated so far would do away with most, if not all, of the pests &
more importantly the reasons they appeared in the first place.
If they are still tormenting you, or you suspect they are, even though you have
faithfully adhered to the protocol so far, do let me know; there's always a way out.
19
If you are in really bad shape or can't workout much then atleast start with a self-
massage today. But then don't use massage as an apology for not being able to
workout by more than a day.
Regular exercise tones up your organs, including those directly involved in self-
immunity. Other benefits ranging from regular bowels to release of endorphins
making you feel good. [16]
Atleast 45 minutes of low-impact physical activities every single day are a must.
Bootstrap yourself out of the “too-tired-to-exercise loop”.
You should sweat sufficiently several times a week. To aid sweating, you may do
your fitness regimen -
• after drinking a cup of warm water
• with lots of clothes on
• in a warm room
• go for a sauna
Do ensure proper ventilation. Oxygenation kills germs. Lower oxygen levels in cells
leads to parasite attacks.
Without adequate exercise you risk organ deterioration, weak bones & joints, weight
gain, muscle loss, low self-worth, etc. Physical workouts also facilitate full recharge
via restful sleep. Sleep deprivation is detrimental to immune function. [15]
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM :
The lymphatic system also helps defend the body against germs like viruses,
bacteria, and fungi that can cause illnesses. Those germs are filtered out in the
lymph nodes, which are small masses of tissue located along the network of lymph
vessels.
20
The nodes house lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. Some of those
lymphocytes make antibodies, which are special proteins that fight off germs and
stop infections from spreading. Antibodies help in trapping disease-causing germs
and destroying them.
The spleen (as a lypmphatic node) plays an important part in fighting infections. It
contains lymphocytes and another kind of white blood cell called macrophages,
which engulf and destroy bacteria, dead tissue and foreign matter. The spleen also
21
The major parts of the lymph tissue are located in the bone marrow, spleen, thymus
gland & other lymph nodes, especially the tonsils. The heart, lungs, intestines, liver
and skin also contain lymphatic tissues.
Germinal centres (GC) are sites within lymph nodes or lymph nodules in peripheral
lymph tissues where intense mature B lymphocytes, otherwise known as
Centrocytes, rapidly proliferate, differentiate, mutate through somatic hypermutation
and class switch during antibody responses.
The thymus is composed of two identical lobes and is located anatomically in the
anterior superior mediastinum, in front of the heart and behind the sternum. It's
functions are :
• production of T-lymphocytes (T cells), which are critical cells of the adaptive
immune system,
• production and secretion of thymosins, hormones which control T-lymphocyte
activities and various other aspects of the immune system.
Since the lymphatic system doesn't has a central pump like a heart to keep it going,
it depends on our physical motions for the same. Hence a lymphatic massage i.e a
quick kneading of your joints especially while bathing, will keep you lymphatic
immunity primed up.
Places to be self-massaged :
forehead, face, left & side of the neck, armpits, arms, both sides of the elbows
(inner & outer), abdominal area (stomach, chest), back, pelvic joints / groin area,
thighs, both sides of the knees (inner & outer), ankles, upper feet.
22
Antibiotic allopathy vampirizes it's existence & authority upon your remaining
threatened by infective germs, endlessly.
If you happen to be an active member of any sickness -specific community, you may
want to reevaluate your participation there, because they are NOT your future, as far
as I am concerned.
Hence their supportive bonhomie & incidental info aside, they need not be in your
present either.
How many sheeple from that group will take the opportunity to review & overhaul
their supposedly-healthy food preferences & puppetty lifestyle even in face of a
health ultimatum?
Here's the allopathic standard operating procedure versus your neo-scientific plan of
action :
Visit your doctor for all infections Kill any existing infections biochemically.
(be a good boy / girl).
Get rid of toxicity & negative microvita.
Frequently wash your hands with
anti-microbial soaps. Optimize your physical fitness.
For e.g. Administering antibiotics instead of removing the grounds for a germ
onslaught.
23
Stress hormones, such as cortisol and epinephrine, help the body protect itself
against predators, infections, etc. But prolonged mental stress will be
counterproductive.
“Pursuing your next goal in life, in which your health is a contributive resource” is
perhaps a more inspiring. Reignite your passions & let the health difficulties get
modulated in its melody.
When a person thinks only thoughts of perfect health, the internal processes of his
body will be those of perfect health.
A person's first step toward perfect health must be to form a conception of himself as
perfectly healthy and as doing all things in the way and manner of a perfectly healthy
person.
Having formed this conception, he must relate himself to it in all his thoughts, and
sever all thought relations with disease and weakness.
If he does this, and thinks his thoughts of health with positive FAITH, a
person will cause the Principle of Health within him to become constructively
active, and to take away all his diseases”
- The Science of Being Well, by Wallace D. Wattles.
Everyday read / watch something that makes you laugh - comedy videos, etc.
EFT (emotional freedom technique) tapping may help.
An authentic secular but spiritual meditation system will be a huge asset.
Mental & emotional hygiene + orientation towards riding the rhythm of our innate
purpose in life, makes it easier to surmount any health gotchas along the way.
24
If you notice any infection swirling-up or if it's already underway then here's your
battle suit:
I. COMMON MEASURES -
If you have not yet started on the MicroVita SuperDiet then your blood may still be
sticky. As mentioned in the website & explained further via MicroVita SuperHealth
newsletter, this slows down you immune response besides all other blood related
processes.
To dilute them temporarily, you may use Apple Cider vinegar as per the 'Biochemical
pH acidification' point further ahead.
Then pick one or a few of the following antimicrobial interventons to do the job.
1. Fresh garlic + turmeric, eaten raw. You'll have to mince it & mix with honey or
other foods. Every one – few hours, depending on your case, take 1 – 2 cloves
of garlic & 2” of turmeric / 1 teaspoon if powdered.
2. Biochemical pH alteration :
If you do not know whether the germ prefers acidic or alkaline pH – it makes sense
to alternate between the both once per day.
It would be good for you to know the starting pH of your urine & saliva before you
begin to alter it. You may buy a pack of pH indicator strips from a pharmacy. Ideally
your urine pH should be between 6.5 - 7 and saliva pH above 7.
Alkalization :
You may bio-chemically alkalize your pH with baking soda as per the
formulation given under the “Chelation Therapies” section of “Body freed
from chemicals which kill tissues, thus inviting germs” chapter.
25
Consuming the most alkaline foods is ofcourse the better way out. E.g.
Lime/ lemonade, raw radish, pumpkin seeds soaked for an hour & kept
wet for approximately 8 – 12 hrs.
Acidification :
1 tablespoon of organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar + 1 cup / glass (8
oz.) of water, preferably warm. This will also boost your energy levels.
You may increase to 2 tablespoons for faster response.
You may add one or more of the following to reduce acidification -
• 1 teaspoon sea salt
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 – 2 tablespoon honey
They will also improve the taste.
9. Ozone
An ozone generator can be bought / put together by using parts available from
fish tank suppliers.
This option will do for full-blown cases. For sparsly spread / well hidden germs,
it may not reach every nook & corner behind all tissues, unless too much is
consumed, which is not advisable. You would have to try & see.
This option will do for full-blown cases. For sparsly spread / well hidden
germs , it may not reach every nook & corner behind all tissues, unless too
much is consumed, which is not advisable. You would have to try & see.
There are other general options as well, for e.g Virgin coconut oil, but I presume
these will do. All these can also be used as an external topical application on the
skin. Alternative hot/cold baths (5 minutes hot, then 1 min cold) will also help.
If you know the kind of parasite you are up against, then you may deploy specific
additional measures as follows :
• Mushrooms
▪ Reishii / Lingzhi
▪ Shiitake
▪ Turkey tail
▪ Agaricus blazei
▪ Maitake
• Alkaline pH.
• Vitamin E
• Vitamin B complex,
• Selenium,
• Zinc
• Magnesium etc.
• Ammonium compounds,
• Urea
• Self-urine therapy
• Xylitol
• Aloe vera (Aloe contains at least 23 polypeptids - immune stimulators)
• Bar berry
• Golden seal
• Lavender essential oil
• Peppermint (essential oil as well)
• Black walnut hull
• Slippery elm
• Disinfect yourself, all your cloths & personal effects (mattress, handphone,
bags, shoes, car, etc.) by spraying / soaking with one of the options under
'Common measures' on top of this chapter.
Avoid yeast & mold fermented foods – breads, beans, veggies, cheese,
vinegar, etc.
Antibiotics are a frequent cause of yeast infection, as they are made from
fungus.
V. ANTI MYCOPLASMA
• Borax, as mentioned in the “Chelation Therapies” section of “Body freed from
chemicals which kill tissues, thus inviting germs” chapter.
• Hydrogen peroxide as mentioned under 'Common measures' on top of this
chapter
29
• Citrate
• Copper
• Tetracycline, monocycline (which, unlike tetracycline, penetrates tissues)
• Reduce silica consumption (check the food additives point in Chapter 2)
• Refer to 'other Anti Microbials' below
• Their usual source are tubers, groundnuts, stale breads, moldy furniture, etc.
23. Ginseng
24. Astragalus
25. Hyssop (essential oil as well)
26. Honey
Don't eat if not feeling hungry; except for the herbs needed to fight back.
For sinus infections, irrigate the sinus with a water pik using -
• 1 teaspoon sea salt and 1 teaspoon baking soda.
• Borax, Iodine, Hydrogen peroxide, Electrically Isolated Silver - as specified
under 'Common measures' section, on top of this chapter
• 5-7 drops tea tree oil nose drops per one ounce of filtered / boiled / distilled
water. Warning: it burns!
I am fully confident this retinue of urgent interventions will definitely put you back in
charge of your situation promptly, while the 5 phases of the self-immunity enhancing
protocol work in the background to strengthen your foundation against infections
forever.
Towards that end, the next section highlights the most critical piece missing from th
jigsaw puzzle of your immunity framework.
31
Malnutrition is a common cause of poor immune function; for e.g. low methylation.
[17]
After all is said & done, only a steady unadulterated input of appropriate microvita
constructs – i.e. known & unknown nutrients (to start with) as per the neo-scientific
criterion portrayed below – will empower your body to do what it is supposed to do &
the way it is supposed to be done. For e.g. A killer self-immune defence.
By stopping the entry of disruptive microvita & augmenting the supply of helpful
microvita you will revert back to your earlier healthy state in the course of time it
takes to reverse the balance in favor of helper microvita.
How do we do that?
By starting with the major inlet of all microvita entering your mind-body syndicate.
The food, that sneaked past your gullet today, has various types of quantum
microvita interwoven within their molecular structure. Some of these microvita
are pro-life while others are counter-life.
Inspite of the selectively advertised benefits, they are against your overall best
interest - if not physically, then atleast emotionally & mentally. Our body-mind
existence is tightly inter-dependent.
Only with a neo-scientific 'life-scope', can we diligently classify foods based on the
type & density of these microvita. The destructive microvita (eventually tend to)
cause sicknesses while the constructive types readily support our inner biology &
psychology.
In view of that, MicroVita SuperDiet resulted out of my own strenuous efforts to get -
• the entire range of 120+ known nutrients mandatorily required to properly
run the every-second operations of my body
• in optimum quantities required by your body - about 7 time more than your
current intake.
32
Along the way I experienced so many amazing breakthroughs just via my dinners &
lunch. For e.g. I am ding fine with ~ 1.5 meals a day, thanks to the Solarian
Morphogenesis process.
And because of the way things happened, it was incumbent upon me to generalize it
for anybody interested to make their own breakthroughs as per their special
conditions & aspirations.
I also found that it's not just about the range, quantity & proportion of nutrients, but
also concerns -
These accomplishments will live with you long after you are out of the
precincts of low immunity war-zone; i.e. for the rest of your breaths.
Domino's effect : Some hormones are regulated by the immune system, notably
thyroid hormone activity.[6] Since all our organs are interdependent, an extended
period of dysfunctionality of one organ will cascade further down the chain producing
a domino effect of suboptimal organ outputs.
This inter-dependency between various organs, makes it imperative that all organ
systems be developed together.
For e.g. DHEA & other hormones can act as immunomodulators, altering the
sensitivity of the immune system. Female sex hormones immunostimulate both
adaptive [7, 8, 9, 10] and innate immune responses. [11] most notably prolactin &
growth hormones. [12,13]
Thereafter the “Vedic secret to Longevity & Youthfulness” book will highlight the
most unacknowledged shortage of a critically important biological agent in
your body at this moment. It's a pithy US$ 9.50 value, but your's for free.
It has 10 practical tips to boost your cellular provisions of this metabilic factor,
especially needed in all your immune actions, moment by moment.
For e.g. it is conjectured that a progressive decline in hormone levels with age is
partially responsible for weakened immune responses in aging individuals.[5]
For e.g., if one could take a few vivid moments to project the best possible
outcomes, in different areas of their life, today - rest assured that your elementary
microvita empowerment is what will forge the nitty-gritty of their accomplishment.
34
MicroVita SuperDiet is where the rubber meets the road : all the neo-scientific
principles implemented within the hustle & bustle of your real-life.
Coming back to the rest of this one-shot integrated 5-phase protocol : “United we
stand. Divided we fall” - that's the mainstay behind it's effectiveness.
Preserving it's integrity entails pushing ahead, week-after-week, with all the 5
phases dancing in concert as our joint-front against pathogens. At some point in
times to come let's close the chapter of “low”immunity in your biography.
9 Appendix :
Brief overview of our molecular self-defense arsenal
White blood cells (WBCs), or leukocytes (also spelled "leucocytes"), are cells of the
immune system involved in defending the body against both infectious disease and
foreign materials. They are of following 8 types :
• neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils.
• lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells.
• mast cells.
Leukocytes (white blood cells) act like independent, single-celled organisms and are
the second arm of the innate immune system.
These cells identify and eliminate pathogens, either by attacking larger pathogens
through contact or by engulfing and then killing microorganisms. Innate cells are also
important mediators in the activation of the adaptive immune system.
Monocytes and their macrophage & dendritic cell progeny serve three main
functions in the immune system. These are phagocytosis, antigen presentation and
cytokine production.
Other microbial products can directly activate monocytes and this leads to production
of pro-inflammatory, and with some delay of anti-inflammatory cytokines.
Typical cytokines produced by monocytes are TNF/ tumor necrosis factor, IL-1
interleukin-1and IL-12 interleukin-12.
Macrophages also act as scavengers, ridding the body of worn-out cells and other
debris, and as antigen-presenting cells that activate the adaptive immune system.
36
Dendritic cells (DC) are phagocytes in tissues that are in contact with the external
environment; therefore, they are located mainly in the skin, nose, lungs, stomach,
and intestines.
Mast cells reside in connective tissues and mucous membranes, and regulate the
inflammatory response. They are most often associated with allergy and anaphylaxis
Spleen is an organ that creates lymphocytes. The spleen is also the location
where white blood cells trap organisms. tucked under the left side of the diaphragm.
Infection can also cause the spleen to increase in size.
B cells (bone cells) are involved in the humoral immune response, whereas T
(thymus) cells are involved in cell-mediated immune response. Both B cells and T
cells carry receptor molecules that recognize specific targets.
Cytotoxic T cells (also known as TC, killer T cell, or cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL))
are a sub-group of T cells which induce the death of cells that are infected with
viruses (and other pathogens), or are otherwise damaged or dysfunctional including
tumour cells.
CD4+ lymphocytes, or helper T cells, are immune response mediators, and play an
important role in establishing and maximizing the capabilities of the adaptive immune
response.
Natural killer T cells (NKT cells) are a special kind of lymphocyte that bridges the
adaptive immune system with the innate immune system.
Once activated, these cells can perform functions ascribed to both Th and Tc cells
(i.e., cytokine production and release of cytolytic/cell killing molecules). They are also
able to recognize and eliminate some tumor cells and cells infected with herpes
viruses.
B Cells are the major cells involved in the creation of antibodies that circulate in
blood plasma and lymph, known as humoral immunity.
B cells are multipotent & leave the bone marrow (femurs, hip, ribs and other bones)
before terminal differentiation into plasma cells, which usually happens in lymph
nodes.
Antibodies (or immunoglobulin, Ig), are large Y-shaped proteins used by the
immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects.
In mammals there are five types of antibody: IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM, differing in
biological properties, each has evolved to handle different kinds of antigens.
Antibodies are our molecular watchdogs, waiting and watching for viruses, bacteria
and other unwelcome visitors. Antibodies circulate in the blood, scrutinizing every
object that they touch.
When they find an unfamiliar, foreign object, they bind tightly to its surface. In the
case of viruses, like rhinovirus or poliovirus, a coating of bound antibodies may be
enough to block infection.
Antibodies alone, however, are no match for bacteria. When antibodies bind to a
bacterial surface, they act as markers alerting the other powerful defensive
mechanisms available in the immune system.
• There are normally between 4×109 and 1.1×1010 white blood cells in a litre of
blood (4 - 11 billion).
All of these antibodies are created before they ever see a virus or bacterium. You
38
don't make a special antibody when a virus or bacterium infects your body.
Instead, all of your antibodies are pre-fabricated, lying in wait until a virus or
bacterium attacks. There are so many different kinds of antibodies that one or two
are bound to be the right ones to fight the infection.
These lymphocytes may also make small adjustments on the antibodies they
produce, tailoring their antibodies to bind more tightly and more specifically.
Humans and higher primates also produce “natural antibodies” which are present
in serum before viral infection. Natural antibodies have been defined as antibodies
that are produced without any previous infection, vaccination, other foreign antigen
exposure or passive immunization.
These antibodies can activate the classical complement pathway leading to lysis of
enveloped virus particles long before the adaptive immune response is activated.
Those cells which recognize coated pathogens, have Fc receptors which, as the
name suggests, interacts with the Fc region of IgA, IgG, and IgE antibodies. The
engagement of a particular antibody with the Fc receptor on a particular cell triggers
an effector function of that cell;
Somatic hypermutation:
Following activation with antigen, B cells begin to proliferate rapidly. In these rapidly
dividing cells, the genes encoding the variable domains of the heavy and light chains
undergo a high rate of point mutation, by a process called somatic hypermutation
(SHM).
SHM results in approximately one nucleotide change per variable gene, per cell
39
division. As a consequence, any daughter B cells will acquire slight amino acid
differences in the variable domains of their antibody chains.
This serves to increase the diversity of the antibody pool and impacts the antibody’s
antigen-binding affinity.
Some point mutations will result in the production of antibodies that have a weaker
interaction (low affinity) with their antigen than the original antibody, and some
mutations will generate antibodies with a stronger interaction (high affinity).
B cells that express high affinity antibodies on their surface will receive a strong
survival signal during interactions with other cells, whereas those with low affinity
antibodies will not, and will die by apoptosis.
Thus, B cells expressing antibodies with a higher affinity for the antigen will
outcompete those with weaker affinities for function and survival. The process of
generating antibodies with increased binding affinities is called affinity maturation.
Naïve B cells can be activated in a T-cell dependent or independent manner, but two
signals are always required to initiate activation.
A critical difference between B cells and T cells is how each cell "sees" an antigen.
B cells recognize antigens in their native form.. Once a B cell encounters its cognate
(or specific) antigen (and receives additional signals from a helper T cell
(predominately Th2 type)), it further differentiates into an effector cell, known as a
plasma cell.
Plasma cells are short lived cells (2-3 days) which secrete antibodies. These
antibodies bind to antigens, making them easier targets for phagocytes, and trigger
the complement cascade. The complement system consists of more than 35
soluble and cell-bound proteins.
About 10% of plasma cells will survive to become long-lived antigen specific
memory B cells. Already primed to produce specific antibodies, these cells can be
called upon to respond quickly if the same pathogen re-infects the host; while the
host experiences few, if any, symptoms.
40
When B cells and T cells are activated some will become memory cells.
Immunological memory can either be in the form of passive short-term memory
(lasting between a few days and several months) or active long-term memory.
This is passive immunity because the fetus does not actually make any memory cells
or antibodies.
All T cells originate from haematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow.
Haematopoietic progenitors derived from haematopoietic stem cells (inside femurs,
hip, ribs and other bones) populate the thymus and expand by cell division.
The thymus contributes more naive T cells at younger ages. As the thymus shrinks
by about 3% a year throughout middle age, there is a corresponding fall in the
thymic production of naive T cells, leaving peripheral T cell expansion to play a
greater role in protecting older subjects.
Phagocytes will phagocytose, mast cells and neutrophils will degranulate, natural
killer cells will release cytokines and cytotoxic molecules; that will ultimately result in
destruction of the invading microbe.
Adaptive immune response provides the immune system with the ability to
recognize and remember specific pathogens (to generate immunity), and to mount
stronger attacks each time the pathogen is encountered.
The host's cells express "self" antigens. These antigens are different from those on
the surface of bacteria ("non-self" antigens) or on the surface of virally infected host
cells (“missing-self”). The adaptive response is triggered by recognizing non-self and
missing-self antigens.
If an infection occurred a very long time ago, there is a possibility that the B cells
generating these specific antibodies have naturally decayed.
They allow communication between cells to trigger the protective defenses of the
immune system that eradicate pathogens or tumors.
IFNs belong to the large class of glycoproteins known as cytokines. Interferons are
named after their ability to "interfere" with viral replication within host cells.
IFNs have other functions: they activate immune cells, such as natural killer cells and
macrophages; they increase recognition of infection or tumor cells by up-regulating
antigen presentation to T lymphocytes; and they increase the ability of uninfected
host cells to resist new infection by virus.
Certain host symptoms, such as aching muscles and fever, are related to the
production of IFNs during infection.
About 7 distinct IFNs have been identified in humans. They are typically divided
among three IFN classes: Type I IFN, Type II IFN, and Type III IFN. IFNs belonging
to all IFN classes are very important for fighting viral infections.
