RESUMO

o trabalho analisa alguns processos de cOhstituição da memória coletiva do cangaço e o

modo como em diferentes cidades sertanejas da região nordeste tenta-se recuperar a
memória de Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, o cangaceiro conhecido como Lampião. Aborda o
surgimento de lugares de memória do cangaço, focalizando o grupo folclórico denominado
"Cangaceiros de Lampião", localizado na cidade de Paulo Afonso, sertão da Bahia. A
tradição oral dos entrevistados e os relatos de vida revelam que o cangaço permanece vivo
no campo da memória, atualizado nas disputas do presente.

ABSTRACT

This work analyses some process of the constitution of the cangaço's collective memory
and also tries to recuperate the manner that in different villages of the north east of Brazil
the memory of Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, the "cangaceiro" known as Lampião, is
perpetuated. It takes the surge of some places in the cangaço's memory and looks into the
folk group called " Cangaceiros de Lampião", on Paulo Afonso village, in the sertão of
Bahia. The oral tradition of the people who had been interviewed and the stories about their
lives show that the cangaço keeps alive the memory field, actualized in the present contests.
