Tourism products

Tourism is a single industry but it is made of different industries such as hotel,


airlines, travel agency.

Each one of them provides individual product or they combine together to


provide travel experience.

Products are tangible. This means that they can be picked up and taken away.

Services, unlike products are intangible and cannot be taken away.

Different leisure activities and facilities have different products and services
associated with them.

1. Leisure centre
Example products: Swimming goggles and equipment, protein drinks and bars,
other sports equipment such as rackets.

Packages holiday (Short breaks/cruise holiday)
Transport tickets (Air, trail, ferry)
Foreign currency exchange

Example services: Gym membership, swimming lessons, personal trainer.

2. A hotel
Example products: A meal in the hotel restaurant drinks from the mini bar, a
guide book from the gift shop.
Examples services: Wi-Fi room service, concierge, laundry service.

Tourism products can come in three main type’s package, independent and all
inclusive.

1. A package product: Travel, Accommodation, attraction put together by tour


operator and marketed through travel agencies or direct to the consumer.
2. The independent product: One purchased by the individual no middle man or
travel agent or tour operator involved eg. Buying air ticket, booking hotel.
3. The all inclusive product is where transport, transfer, accommodation, meals,
drinks, use of facilities is all included in the price of holiday eg. Cruise holiday.
4. Ancillary services (Support Services)
-Guiding services eg. Tour guide
Currency exchange – provided by travel agency, bank in a hotel or money
exchange retailer.
5. Marketing of Tourism products – Aim to promote specific products
Travel agency – Brochures
Tour operator through media
Advertisement, television, magazines, conduction trade and holiday pair.
6. Holiday Fairs: customer able to make bookings whilst at the fair usually with
incentives discount.

product or service normally offered by these types of providers.
Travel insurance.
Foreign currency exchange.
Excursions and sightseeing hours.

Hotel booking.
Tickets to theme parks and other attractions.
Guidebooks and guiding services.

1. Infrastructure
Utilities (electricity, water supply) roads, telecommunications, education,
health facilities.
2. Accommodation
Hotel, guesthouse, hostel, camping site.

Tour operator

A tour operator typically combines tour and travel components to create a


package holiday. They advertise and produce brochures to promote their
products holidays and itineraries.

Travel agent

A travel agent is a private retailer or public service that provides travel and
tourism related services to the public on behalf of suppliers such as activities,

airlines, car, rentals, and cruise lines, hotels, railways, travel, insurance and
package tours.

Tour operator:

Plans arrange, sell, advertise and operate tours.

They deal with finer details of the trip like lodgings meals tickets etc.

Their jobs end when you return home.

Travel agent:

Sell, administrate tour package.

Their jobs end when you start your vacation.

The power and influence of tour operators (ROLE)

Accommodation
Promotes and/or provides trade by including in packages or recommending
to guests.
Restaurants
Promotes and/or provides trade by including in packages or recommending
to guests.
Transport
Engages boat, bus, train, plane and other transportation operators to move
guests to/at attractions.
Attractions
Promotes and/or provides trade to natural and cultural attractions through
tours.
Tour guides
Provides employment with in organization or by contact.
