Loading a New Client with NIM

This document assumes that name resolution to the clients is functioning, and the NIM
server has been set-up and created

On the NIM Server


1) Define the new client
smitty nim  Nim admin tasks  manage machines  Define a machine
Define a Machine

Type or select a value for the entry field.


Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

* Host Name of Machine [app-ora]
(Primary Network Install Interface)

Change the cable type to N/A


Define a Machine

Type or select values in entry fields.


Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

F3 to go back on menu.
Manage Machines

Move cursor to desired item and press Enter.

List All Machines


Define a Machine
Change/Show Characteristics of a Machine
Specify New Master for Client Machine
Remove a Machine
Manage Network Install Interfaces
Manage Network Install Resource Allocation
Perform Operations on Machines
Query Remote Machine
Manage Secondary Adapter Definition Files

Select Manage Network Install Resource Allocation  Allocate resources  select the
new client  Select the following four resources

After completion, F3 twice to the Manage Machine menu. Select perform operations on
machines  Select the new client  Select bos_inst 
Perform a Network Install

Type or select values in entry fields.


Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

Boot the client partition into SMS mode from WebSM


Right click on the partition  Activate

Select 2) Remote IPL Settings

Select the Ethernet adapter

Select IP Parameters

Enter the IP Information. If the network is flat, use the NIM server as a default gateway

Verify Adapter Settings

Under adapter in the virtual world, there is not much we can do. With a real adapter, set
the speed and duplex to match the network switch

Turn Spanning tree off in the other menu

Run the Ping test to ensure communications with the server

Go back to the Main Menu
Go to Option 5, boot options

Select option 1 Install Device

Make it easy, select all

Select the virtual Ethernet adapter

Normal Boot

IF you get the following error, run through the screens again. Sometimes virtual devices
need some help being recognized

Always check the setting, select #2

Check the disk settings in option 1

The system will then load AIX, it will be ready for addition customization
