1. Practice tactical mapping, using your own problem and goal example.
a. Read Tactical Mapping Instructions
b. Create your own tactical map, using colored markers, if you have them,
to indicate the nature of the relationships you have identified.
c. Identify a target for action, based on your map, using the Tactical Map
Target form
i. Why do you think it is a good target?
ii. What would be your goal for affecting this target?
d. Send this completed form to Nancy Pearson for review at

1. Using the tactic case examples from the New Tactics Book listed above, choose
TWO of the examples and answer these questions as you read each case:
a. Identify the problem
b. Identify the goal
d. Identify who is the target(s) of the tactic
e. Identify the allies and opponents listed in the case study
2. Review Case Study from previous lesson: Age 10 and Divorced: Nujood Ali and the
Fight Against Child Brides in Yemen
a. Review your list from the Lesson 3 assignment. You had listed all the
direct and indirect contact relationships for developing the tactical map.
b. Use your list and place each direct and indirect contact relationship on
the “Spectrum of Allies” form.

allies”

1. Using the tactical map you created for your problem, create your own Spectrum
of Allies.
a. Draw a half circle and divide into five wedges for Active allies, Passive
allies, Neutrals, Passive opponents, and Active opponents.
b. Write down each individual, group or institution you mapped on the
section of the spectrum where you think it fits.
c. When you are done, review the target chosen from your tactical map in
Lesson 3 – does this still look like the best target?
d. Circle the target(s) you now think are the best ones for your problem.
e. Fill in the form—Spectrum of Allies form, showing where each individual,
group or institution was placed on your Spectrum of Allies and type your
choice of targets.

d. Identify if any of these tactics will be adapted from the cases you learned
about during this course.

a. How effective is the tactic in reaching the objective outlined for the

b. Is the choice of target and tactic(s) effective in making progress in
moving the strategy toward the goal?
c. What dangers need to be considered or are being encountered?
d. What can be done to adjust the tactic in order to minimize the
danger?
e. If dangers cannot be minimized what other tactic could be used
instead?
f. What was learned from this course that will be helpful to you in the
future?
