National Mission for Manuscripts, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts,
New Delhi

proposes to organize a

Basic level workshop

on

Manuscriptology & Paleography

from 11th to 28th February 2011.

The object will be to encourage and train young scholars in such fields as the principles
of text editing from manuscript sources, methodology and general principles of editing
giving emphasis on transcription and collation, manuscript documentation and
cataloguing, basics of manuscript conservation and preservation etc, through practical
demonstration as well as by imparting theoretical knowledge on such topics as evolution
and history of Manuscriptology and Paleography and ancient Indian scripts.

Scripts such as Gaudi, Nandinagari (Old Devanagari), Asokan Brahmi, Medieval Bengali
and a few more regional languages are going to be taught so that a complete output of the
workshop may be realized in a holistic manner.

Willing candidates (students of M. Phil & Ph.D preferably) who have not participated
earlier in the workshops organized by the National Mission for Manuscripts, New Delhi,
may please apply with bio-data to the undersigned positively within 25th January 2011.
Participants coming from the neighbouring States viz., Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand, etc. will
be provided T.A., board and lodging facility as per norms of the National Manuscripts
Mission. The selected candidates will be duly informed of further details.

Further information about the workshop:
As the achievable object will be to produce a complete output in the form of a transcribed
book along with presented papers by different experts which shall be submitted in the
office of the National Mission for Manuscripts for its publication maximum within one
month of its completion, the School of Vedic Studies, Rabindra Bharati University will
select at least one unpublished manuscript (preferably scientific) for example, from Gaudi
script (old Bengali) or any other regional script of West Bengal for the practice of
participants to transcribe. With a view to achieving the optimum objective level, the
participants will be required to help in the transcription of manuscripts as part of practical
course, besides theoretical training. Among various areas of instruction, a few may be
mentioned as will be taken up for theoretical teaching during the workshop.
Medium of instruction shall be in English.
Areas of instruction :
Evolution and history of Manuscriptology & Paleography.
Evolution and history of various Ancient Indian Scripts.
Principles of Editing a Text on the basis of Manuscripts .
Methodology of Manuscript Documentation and Cataloguing.
Proper handling of Manuscripts.
Basics of Manuscript Conservation.
Basics of Manuscript Preservation.
Basics of Microfilming of Manuscripts.
Basics of Manuscript Digitization.
Writing practice of different Ancient Indian Scripts such as – Gaudi (Old Bengali),
Medieval Bengali, Nandinagari (Old Devanagari), Asokan Brahmi, Standard Roman
Phonetics along with all old regional scripts of West Bengal.
Distinguished experts shall be in charge of conducting the workshop. At least 4 classes
daily, having at least 1.5 hours of duration of each will be the tentative schedule of
classes. Since it is a time-bound programme no holiday/leave can be claimed by any of
the participants/experts during the workshop.
Prof. Nabanarayan Bandopadhyay, Professor and Director of the School will act as the
