I. Read the following text and then choose the best answers (only one for each

A clever professor came to a great river. He asked a boatman to take him across.
The boatman rowed very slowly, for the boat was small and the river was wide. For a
time the two men were silent, but the clever professor could not remain silent for very
long. At last he said to the boatman, “Have you read any history?”
“No, I haven’t,” said the boatman. He continued to row slowly along.
“That is a great pity pity,” said the professor. “Don’t you know of the interesting
things we can read about in the history books? There are stories of ancient kings and
famous battles. History books tell us about the people of long ago. We learn how they
lived, what they ate and how they dressed. Why haven’t you read any history?”
“I’m afraid I have never learned to read,” said the boatman, “and so I do not know
any history.”
