Executive Director Message

:: Maybe it’s just rhetorical, but why am I never asked to choose

between buying another bomber jet plane or funding SNAP
(foodstamps) benefits for people in need? At what point did I/we
lose the right to choose?

It would seem in the coming months we will be asked to support

many good legislative priorities to be paid for by cutting benefits
for those caught in the mess that is our economy—many through
no fault of their own. For example, the Senate version of a Child
Nutrition Reauthorization bill would be funded in part by a cut in
SNAP benefits. Whatever you choose to support, and the choices
are hard, please continue to give thought and voice to asking,
why? Why is it only those most in need who are asked to
sacrifice?

There are many aspects of our food system that need fixing. But
long term solutions require that everything be on the table.

First and foremost, let’s remember that the purpose of food is to

nourish people. That is the priority. And history proves that the
responsible way to meet that priority is to develop the best
sustainable system that works for all people.

When we forget these simple and basic principles, when we

accept the premise that food is to make money, to enrich a
corporation, we lose our way as a people.

We already know how to build a food system that not only

nourishes people but replenishes the planet and creates wealth. If
we can imagine such a world we have the capacity to make it
happen. People can do that.

Maybe it’s time to stop listening to and following small-minded

leaders who don’t have the imagination to understand why the
answers to our economic, health, environmental and food crises
are a re-ordering of our priorities.

Maybe it’s time for each of us to lead by example, while we

continue to ask, why?
