Chemistry 141 Name ________________________

Hour Exam 2
Fall, 2006

There are 120 points on this exam. All multiple choice questions are worth 5 each. For all
other questions, the points are in parentheses at the end of the question. Show work
where appropriate. No work = no credit. Problems must be done by dimensional analysis
where specified. Note that persistent significant figure errors will result in a point
penalty.

1. Complete and balance molecular equations for each of the following reactions.
(5 each)
a. Barium metal reacts with phosphoric acid. One product is a solid.

b. Sodium carbonate reacts with hydrobromic acid. One product is a gas.

c. Magnesium metal combines with the nitrogen in the air to produce a single
compound.

2. Write names for each of the following. (5)

Na3P __________________________________

FeF2 ___________________________________

Cu2SO4 _________________________________

HNO2(aq) _________________________________

B5H9 ____________________________________
3. PCl3 is produced according to the following reaction:

P4(s) + Cl2(g) → PCl3

a. Balance the equation. (1)

b. 5.00 g P4 are reacted with excess chlorine. Calculate the theoretical yield
of PCl3. Use dimensional analysis. (4)

c. A student reported obtaining 16.4 g PCl3 from the preparation in (b).

4. A student wishes to make 175.0 mL of 0.9280 M Ca(NO3)2 using
Ca(NO3)2. 4 H2O and deionized water.
a. Calculate the number of grams of Ca(NO3)2. 4 H2O required to make this
solution. (4) (If you do this correctly by dimensional analysis instead
of algebraically, you will get a bonus point.)

b. Use dimensional analysis to calculate the number of grams of solute in

70.0 mL of this solution. (4)

5. Write formulas for each of the following: (5)

sodium monohydrogen phosphate __________________

titanium(IV) oxide ___________________________

iodine heptachloride _________________________

ammonium chlorate _________________________

hypobromous acid ___________________________

6. 45.0 mL of 0.265 M NaCl, 60.0 mL of 0.175 M K2SO4, and 35.0 mL of
0.300 M KCl are mixed.
a. Calculate the [K+] in the final solution. (4)

b. Calculate the [SO4-2] in the final solution. (3)

7. 20.00 mL of 0.1000 M AgNO3 are mixed with 15.00 mL of 0.100 M K2CrO4.

Calculate the concentrations of each species in the final solution. A reaction
DOES occur when these solutions are mixed. (6)
8. Given the following equation:

AgNO3(aq) + MgCl2(aq) → Mg(NO3)2 + AgCl

a. Balance the equation and identify which product is the solid. (2)

b. 45.0 mL of 0.525 M AgNO3 are reacted with excess MgCl2. Calculate

the theoretical of solid product. Use dimensional analysis. (6)

c. What volume, in mL, of 0.250 M MgCl2 is needed to completely react

with 60.0 mL of 0.185 M AgNO3? Use dimensional analysis. (6)
9. Balance the following equation: (1)

KO2(s) + H2O(l) → O2(g) + KOH(s)

a. Calculate the g KOH that will be produced by the reaction of 100.0 g KO2
with 125.0 mL water. The density of water at this temperature
is 1.00 g/mL. Use dimensional analysis. (8)

b. How many grams of the reagent in excess remain when the reaction is
complete? Use dimensional analysis for most of this problem. (5)
10. A sample of gas occupies 455.0 mL at 50.0°C and 1.25 atm. Show work.
a. If the temperature is decreased to 25.0°C, and the volume increased to
600.0 mL, on the sample described above, what is the new pressure of the
gas? (5)

b. Starting with the original sample, what temperature would have

to be used if the sample were to occupy 350.0 mL at 775.0 torr? (5)
