Academia Tica
Academia Tica was founded in 1986. Our first school is located in the town of Coronado
(70,000 inhabitants), located just outside the center of the capital city of San José (6mi or
10km). Our Pacific beach school, founded in 2006, is located in Playa Jacó, just seven blocks
away from the ocean.
Academia Tica is committed to excellence in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign
language and is:
among those schools with the most experience in teaching Spanish to international students in
Costa Rica,
offering a personalized attention in small groups,
a school with professionally prepared staff and university educated native Spanish-speaking faculty.

School Facilities: Coronado

Includes 12 classrooms, a resource library, WiFi, free internet access from 9.30 am to 3 pm, a caf-
eteria and a 5000 sqm tropical garden. Further school services include cable TV, local newspapers,
board games, a volleyball area, use of Latin American video and song collection,
private parking lot.

School Facilities: Playa Jacó

Includes 4 inside classrooms, a lounge, a terrace also used for classes, a small
swimming pool and a 900 sqm tropical garden. Internet access is free during
working hours, WiFi. The school is just a 15-20 minute walking distance from the
ocean, shops, hotels, restaurants, doctors, farmacies, apartments and cabinas.

Methodology, Materials and Levels

Academia Tica applies the total immersion method. All classes are conducted ex-
clusively in Spanish. Our teaching method is interactive, communicative, intercul-
tural and student-centered. Most class materials are developed and updated by the
school and are included in the tuition price. Latin American topics are a departure
point to most themes discussed in class.
There are 6 levels available all year round: Beginners I & II, Intermediate I & II,
Advanced I & II. On the first day at school the individual language level of each
student is assessed in a grammar and oral test. Upon evaluation of this test the
student will be placed in his/her corresponding level.
Costa Rica – Pure and Untamed
If you have been thinking about a special place
to travel and a new experience to live, Costa
Rica is the answer. Imagine for a moment... a
land of friendly and peaceful people, a land of
tropical natural wonders being preserved for all
to enjoy.

Costa Rica is a region filled with tropical rain forests, active

volcanoes, colorful exotic flowers and exquisite beaches, Costa
Rica has it all with no artificial ingredients!
Costa Rica, 51,100 sq. km is bordered to the north by Nica-
ragua, to the east by the Caribbean Sea, to the southeast by
Panama, and to the west and southwest by the Pacific Ocean.
It lies completely within the tropics. Costa Rica was created by
volcanic activity. In the northern region you will find Arenal
Volcano (1,633 meters), one of the most active volcanoes in
Latin America.
Like many tropical countries, Costa Rica experiences two
seasons, the wet and the dry, rather than the four seasons in
temperate regions. The dry season lasts generally from Novem-
ber to April and this is called “verano“ (or summer) by Costa
Ricans. The rest of the year is called the “green season“ with
rainfalls in the afternoons and sunshine until midday.
Temperatures vary little from season to season in the Central
Valley. San José has an “eternal spring“. Lows average a mild
18°Celsius year round while highs are a pleasant 28° Celsius.
msn: erickandregarcia@hotmail.com
The World Resource Institute, in a chart published in
1995, shows that Costa Rica has the most varied fauna
on the planet.
With the Constitution of 1949 the army was abolished.
Costa Ricans are known worldwide for their distin-
guished love of peace, which also found its expression
in the Nobel Peace Prize for the President Oscar Arias
in 1987.
Costa Rica is the oldest Latin American democracy
with public elections every 4 years. Over the last 50
years, Costa Rica has managed to institutionalize an
education and a health system for the entire population
and is often considered to be among the most advanced
countries within Latin America. The percentage of il-
literacy is evaluated at only 4 %, life expectancy is 79
years.
The introduction of coffee during the XIX century
began to provide a product suitable for export. This was
followed by bananas, and today these two crops con-
tinue to be very important in the country. Other exports
include meat, sugar, flowers, tobacco, cocoa beans and
many tropical fruits such as papaya, pineapple and
mango. However, the most important economic factors
today are tourism and the development of new technol-
ogy plants, the latter growing rapidly in the Central Val-
ley. The local currency is called Colón.
Coronado, a typical Costa Rican town
Green Coronado (70,000 inhabitants) is a lively semi rural town with a very active community life and
a pleasant Mediterranean climate. Towered by the large gothic cathedral, it is home to many painters,
writers and politicians, and it is a clean natural area.
Coronado allows you to enjoy the cultural activities of the easily accessible capital of San José, just 6
miles (approx.10km) away. Public transportation is available from early morning until late evening.
The University of Costa Rica and the lively surrounding streets with coffee shops, jazz and salsa clubs
and student restaurants are just 3 miles away (approx. 5 km).
Coronado is the home of important institutions, such as the Interamerican Institute for Agriculture
(IICA), the Center for Latin American Social Studies (ICAES), the Costa Rican Olympic Committee
(COI) and the famous snake research center Instituto Clodomiro Picado.
Coronado also offers services such as modern supermarkets, a premium sports club with fitness gym,
indoor pools, spa and gymnasiums, an authentic Sunday farmer’s market, doctors, hardware stores,
bars, banks, traditional sodas, pizzerias and more. Being located near the southern border of the fa-
mous Braulio Carrillo National Park and only 30km away from the Irazú Volcano, Coronado is also
a great place for nature lovers and active people who love hiking in the mountains, mountain biking,
riding or exploring hidden trails.

Playa Jacó, a surfer’s heaven

A laid-back bustling town, tropical Playa Jacó is one of the most popular Costa
Rican beaches. Located in on central Pacific Coast, 2 hours from San José, Jacó
has the reputation of being a “party beach” with an active night life.
However, the fun is casual and relaxed. People here are friendly and nice,
Church of Coronado mostly catering to a larger number of foreign and younger Costa Rican tour-
ists who want to enjoy a more tranquil lifestyle. Jacó has a nice 3km chocolate
colored sandy beach and offers a spectacular Pacific sunset. In Jacó you will find
accommodations and restaurants to suit every budget, as well as a huge number
of local cafes, lounges, stores, supermarkets, surf-shops, tour operators, cyber
cafes, and discotheques.
A major attraction is the fantastic surfing here, as the waves are consistently big
Playa Jacó and the breaks are very good. However, you need to be careful about swimming,
as riptides are quite common along the beach. The southernmost part of the
beach is said to be the best place to swim.
Other activities include visiting national parks such as Carara and Manuel
Antonio, or activities such as a Rain Forest Aerial Tram, waterfall canopy tours,
kayaking, mountain biking or excursions to nearby beaches like Playa Hermosa
and Playa Herradura.
