Word Structure
Lesson Notes 1

Words in English are made up of:

PREFIX ROOT WORD SUFFIX

Bi- + cycle
sol + -ar
Re- + gen + -arate

What is a root word?

A root word is the base word or part of a word that is a basis in forming a new word by
adding prefix and/or suffix.

Root words are easy to spot if the root words are of modern English, like aim in aimless, love
in unloved, joy in joyful and happy in happiness. But, there are root words in English that
comes from other languages like Latin or Greek. These root words may be hard to spot, but if
you know many of these root words, it will be easier for you to understand its meaning.

Connotation and Denotation

Lesson Notes 2

13
What can you think of upon seeing or hearing the number 13?

Some may think it’s a bad number; it’s a bad luck, death, fear, or suspicion. But for some, it’s
just a number; a number equivalent to the sum of six and seven.

When you say denotation, you are referring to the real meaning of the word. On the other
hand, when you say connotation, you are referring to the implied meaning of the word.

The denotative meaning of the number 13 is a number higher than 12, while the connotative
meaning of number 13 can make people feel so scared.

CHEAP!
$$$
Another example is the word cheap.

Its denotative meaning is low in price. On the other hand, its connotative meaning is poorly
made.

The words that we use may have a shade, positive or negative. There are some neutral
words, but in most cases, the words that we use have implied meaning to them and they are
going to influence the way people feel when they hear them.

Which One’s Right?

Worksheet 2

Directions: For each of the following sentences, explain why the word or words in
boldface are not good choices for the sentence.

1. TRIP and JOURNEY are both words whose denotations mean to travel, right? What’s
the connotation of each? Which one is appropriate when you are referring to travelling
to a nearby Eco park for two days?
(Hint: What would you pack for a trip? How about for a journey?)

Trip is going from a place to another and returning.

Journey is talking about a trip that takes a long time and having realizations or self-
discoveries.

Trip is the appropriate one when referring a travel to a nearby Eco park for two days.

2. DIRT and SOIL both have a denotation that mean the upper layer of earth or the
ground, but what’s the connotation of each?
(Hint: Do plants grow best in dirt or in soil? Why would that be?)

Dirt is a substance combined by sand, soil, and dust.

Soil is a mixture of organic matters and organisms which support life.

Plants grow best in soil because soil has organic matters and organisms which the
plants need.

3. CABIN and HUT have the same denotation. They are both places to live. What’s the
connotation of each?
(Hint: Which would you rather live in? Why?)

Cabin is a shelter made from wood and boards which has different modern amenities
like kitchen, bathroom, etc..
Hut is a simple one room shelter.

I would rather live in a cabin because it’s much more complete than the hut.

4. Shawn wept at the death of his female parent. Why does female parent doesn’t
sound good?
Female parent doesn’t sound good for me because it sounds like an animal parent.
We can use mother instead because it’s more appropriate to use and doesn’t sound
weird.

5. He named his new song, “House Sweet House.” Why does this sound bad for a
song’s name? What kinds of feeling are missing?
“House Sweet House” sounds bad for a song name because house refers to the
building where people live in. It should be “Home Sweet Home” instead because home
refers to the connection of the people living inside the house.
