Changes 1850-1871
Napoleon the 3rd
 President in 1848
 Changes himself into a emperor; he is a liberal monarch
o Liberal monarch=lots change and reform, gives people some “fake” power, he is the monarch
 Makes lots of changes
o Dissolves the republic
o Helps the infrastructure of the city to stimulate the economy
o Brings in the industrial revolution to France
o Restored male suffrage- so that people feel they have power
o Rebuilds Paris so that he can control the troops (Housman was the architect of the changes)
o Creates hospital and free Medicare
o Legalizes unions
 These are all social laws, trying to appease the mass
Crimean war 1854-1856
 Russian v. Ottoman empire, France, Britain, Austria (stays out)
 Russia wanted to attack Ottoman empire because they wanted to control the trade out west
 Ottoman is weakening; so the Russian attack citing a fake reason to start a war
o Russia really motivated because they want to get a warm watter port
 Britain sides with Ottomans because they want to keep the balance of powers
 France comes in with the ottomans with hopes to gain some land
 Austria was supposed to come to Russia aid, but they don’t: dissolves the concert of Europe;
Conservative Order is ended
 Because the alliance is no more; Middle countries try to unite
 Congress of Vienna means nothing and are annul
 Medicine sucks and needs to be improved in Russia
 Women become involved in medicine

 Nationalism
 Austrians and other countries are occupying Italy
 Wants to grow the economy and the military; to do that he needs more land

 All these countries occupying believe that they are protecting the pope
 The Papal states are going against Italy

 After that he goes into Austria, making sure that France wont attack
