The FTSS Hybrid III 50th Percentile Male Crash Test
Dummy is the most widely used crash test dummy
in the world for the evaluation of automotive safety
restraint systems in frontal crash testing. Originally
developed by General Motors, the Hybrid III 50th
design is now maintained and developed by FTSS in
conjunction with the Society of Automotive Engineers’
(SAE) Biomechanics Committees and the National
Highway Transport and Safety Administration
(NHTSA). The dummy is a regulated test device in
the USA Code of Federal Regulations (Part 572,
Subpart E) and also in the European ECE
Regulations. It is considered to have excellent
biofidelity and instrumentation capability. Recent
revisions have improved the biofidelity in the femur
range of motion, the ankle and foot. The dummy can
also be used in many non-automotive applications
such as wheelchairs, medical and sports equipment.

FTSS offers highly detailed and fully validated Finite
Element Models of its dummies, plus crash
simulation services. The FT-Arup FE Model Series
supports the LS-Dyna™ format. Pamcrash™ format

Head and Neck
The skull and skull cap are one piece cast aluminum
parts with removable vinyl skins. The neck is a segmented
rubber and aluminum construction with a center cable. It
accurately simulates the human dynamic moment/
rotation, flexion and extension response.

Upper Torso
The rib cage is represented by six high strength steel
ribs with polymer based damping material to simulate
human chest force-deflection characteristics. Each rib
unit comprises left and right anatomical ribs in one
continuous part open at the sternum and anchored to the
back of the thoracic spine. A sternum assembly connects
to the front of the ribs and includes a slider for the chest
deflection rotary potentiometer. The angle between the
neck and upper torso is determined by the construction
of the neck bracket which can incorporate a six-axis neck
transducer. A two-piece aluminum clavicle and clavicle
link assembly have cast integral scapulae to interface
with shoulder belts.
Lower Torso
A curved cylindrical rubber lumbar spine mount provides
the humanlike slouch of a seated person and mounts to
the pelvis through an optional three axis lumbar load cell.
The pelvis is a vinyl skin/urethane foam molded over an
aluminum casting in the seated position. The ball-jointed
femur attachments carry bump stops to reproduce the
human leg to hip moment/rotation characteristics. The
femur, tibia and ankle can be instrumented to predict bone
fracture and the knee can evaluate tibia to femur ligament
injury. The foot and ankle simulate heel compression
and ankle range of motion.

Optional Equipment
FTSS is now offering Ball Bearing Knee Slider Assemblies for the Hybrid III Fiftieth Percentile
Crash Test Dummy. They come in sets (inboard and outboard sliders) for both right and left
knees. The Ball Bearing Knee Sliders provide consistent performance over the current knee sliders
due the ground ball bearing, which allows for smoother operation.

The Ball Bearing Knee Slider Assemblies are direct replacements for the standard knee sliders
that are supplied with the complete dummy. They are sold as complete assemblies, which include
knee assemblies, rotary potentiometers, modified knee caps. The sliders are made out of hardened,
high strength steel and natural rubber with chrome steel ball bearings.

The Ball Bearing Knee Slider Assemblies are tested and certified to the same performance
corridors as the standard knee slider assemblies. To calibrate the Ball Bearing Knee Sliders, a New
Load Distribution Bracket (Part Number TE-512-109) is required.

SIP-1 Submarining Indicator Pelvis 1

Submarining is a condition under which the lap belt moves

upward over the iliac of the pelvis and exerts pressure on the
the abdomen. It can be further defined as a sideways movement
of the occupant (human or dummy), which can result in forces
applied directly to the soft tissues of the abdomen.

In the absence of submarining, the lap belt bears directly on the

lower portion of the iliac. The mechanism is displayed in this
pelvis by the use of three strain gages on the right iliac and three
strain gages on the left iliac.

Installation and removal of the strain gages from the pelvis is

accomplished by ducts molded into the pelvis casting through
the posterior surfaces of the pelvic mold. Strain gages are
inserted through the posterior ducts, and are threaded into the
pelvis casting.

This pelvis is available for use on the Hybrid III 50th Percentile
Dummy.
