BACKGROUND & PROGRAM JUSTIFICATION
The idea behind a partnership between Art Studio
and Artoconecto is to expand on the KIDSART
arts program designed for children between the
ages of 6 to 12. For three years Art Studio has
been serving communities of underprivileged
children in the area of Little Haiti. The vision of
Art studio is to collaboratively advance the
sponsorship and implementation of
(creative-holistic) art integration programs in
impoverished communities. Art Studio’s current
location has allowed the organization to mold a
solid vision and consolidate on the importance
that it is to provide alternative methods of
teaching; healing and support that empower
young minds and help them lead better lives. With
these tools our at-risk ‘cradle to prison’ youth will
be guided out of systemic poverty towards a path
of healing success.
KIDSART was implemented in 2009 through a
grant obtained from Miami-Dade Cultural
Affairs in response to the severe budget cuts
received in the areas of arts education in Miami.

schoolchildren as possible to the arts community

ARTOCONECTO is a non-profit arts advocacy
organization based in Miami, FL, dedicated to
creating and promoting unique artistic projects.
Artoconecto pioneered the concept of the pop-up
gallery, creating enormous roving art ‘galleries’ in
non-traditional venues. We strive to present the
most dynamic artists we can find, and provide
them the platform and the tools to both engage
the public, and to take bold new risks.

visits and workshops conducted by working
artists. During each summer camp, a relevant
topic or theme is selected. Each week for 5
weeks, a group of committed kids are assigned
workshops where the artist and the kids are
engaged hands-on in the creation of a piece of
artwork that correlates to the theme.

exhibition within an art gallery. The children get
to experience first-hand the vibrant
community of Miami, helping them to learn and
understand the important role that art can play in
their daily lives. Since its implementation,
KIDSART has experienced a significant increase
in attendance, growing from a group of 12
children in 2009 to 21 in 2010. Moreover the
concept of KIDSART has been well received in
the artistic community in Miami and has
obtained the participation of known artists such
as John DeFaro, Karen Rifas, Onajide Shabaka,
Morphologic Studios (Coolin Foord and Jared
McKay), Tracey Hagen, Agustina Woodgate,
Johnny Robles, Oscar Fuentes and Luis Valle.
The mission of ART STUDIO INC, a 501c3
non-profit organization, is to empower young
minds by providing a safe location where youth
are inspired and guided by artists, teachers and
professional mentors who support the student’s
education and career development through the
integration of creative holistic arts.

• Time frame of one month (two days per week,
four hours per day in the afternoons
from 2-6pm)
