Annual Report 2009-2010

The Sophia Mural at Holy Names University (HNU) was created by artist Louisa Jenkins and assisted
by Sister Maria Luisa Wolfskill ’49 † and HNU art students. Located on the east side of Brennan Hall,
the Mural is a mosaic symbol of wisdom and the work pursued by a Catholic Liberal Arts Institution.
The sculpture emanating from the head, symbolizing wisdom and connecting with each of the three
mosaic panels, suggests wave lengths of power – Light, Creativity and Energy – infused
into the three academic areas of: Philosophy and Theology, Arts and Letters and Natural Sciences.

A message from the President

In ancient Greek tradition, Zeus
was so fed up with the stupidity and
crudeness of men and women that he
wanted to destroy them. Fortunately for
us, Prometheus intervened and shared
two things that make us human. The
first was the gift of fire, previously the
exclusive property of the gods. The
second was the virtue of philanthropy,
literally the love (philos) of humankind
(anthropos). These gifts were the first
acts of philanthropy. Given fire, we
were able to progress. Given the ability
to love others, we were empowered to
become fully human.
The Judeo-Christian tradition catches
this same spirit of empowering phi-
lanthropy in the Golden Rule, which

foundress of the Sisters of the Holy
Names of Jesus and Mary, echoes
when she asks us to “Extend a hand to
one another to help surmount the
difficulties that occur.”
Holy Names University exists only
because of the love and generosity
that the Sisters, trustees, faculty, staff,
alumni, friends, and you manifest for
our mission. Grounded in the core val-
ues of the liberal arts and the Catholic
tradition, we try to touch each genera-
tion of students, preparing them to
think critically, seek and discern the
truth, communicate effectively and
persuasively, and become skilled
professionals guided by love, ethics,
social justice, diversity, and generosity.  
This special issue includes the names
of those individuals and organizations
that have shown their love of our
students and the common good by
sharing their resources with Holy
Names University. Each gift is an act
of philanthropy, an act of love, and a
gift empowering the receiver and
ennobling the giver.

sustain, transform, and challenge
us anew to “liberate the spirit” in

service Student Center. The renovated

CO Technology Support Center, the
S.H. Cowell Foundation Curriculum

Seven endowed scholarships
have been established at Holy Names
University in the past three years,
totaling over $3.3 million. Each donor
wished to become a partner with the
University assuring that our students
are able to afford a first-class educa-
tion, particularly during this time
when the cost of a college education
seems prohibitive. Their stories and
their reasons for funding a scholarship,
which are each unique and inspiring,
are included here.
Lorena ‘51† and Bob
Thorup wanted to support students
who were planning to become teachers,
as well as to promote the field of educa-
tion. Remembering their college experi-
ences (Lorena was an HNU alumna
from the Class of 1951 and Bob gradu-
ated from San José State College) as
well as their own years of teaching, they
hoped to assist some HNU students to
complete their studies and give back to
their communities through the gift of
education, with some perhaps teaching
in Oakland, their native city.
Wesley and Martha
Jones’ granddaughter, Marisa, first
visited HNU in 2001 and they were a
part of her educational journey from
that first day until her graduation in
May of 2005. Since Wesley and Mar-
tha were so impressed with the educa-
tion and individual attention their
granddaughter received from HNU’s

faculty and staff, it made sense for
them to fund an endowed scholarship
at HNU in memory of their parents.
Since the establishment of the scholar-
ship, they have continued their com-
mitment to Holy Names University
through a legacy gift that will perpetu-
ate their family values.
Ann Reynolds, a member of the
HNU Board of Trustees, believes in
the mission of Holy Names University,
especially its emphasis on reaching
talented and bright students who might
not attend college without financial
support. Reynolds has observed that
when the University receives donations,
they are carefully and frugally spent and
used to the maximum. Ann has audited
classes at HNU and says, “HNU has a
good nurturing feeling. It is an excit-
ing place to learn!” A scholarship for
women entering the MBA program
was established in Ann’s name in 2006
and, after hearing about our challenge
campaign, she informed us that HNU
will be remembered in her estate plans
as well, thereby creating a lasting legacy
of giving.

Rosemarie Nassif, SSND,
Ph.D. received a standing ovation
from the 175 guests attending the
Rose Gala on Thursday, June 3, 2010
at the Claremont Country Club. The
auspicious occasion, held in honor of
Sr. Rosemarie’s July 2010 retirement,
benefited the Frieda Mary Nassif
Scholarship. Established in honor of Sr.
Rosemarie’s mother, the Holy Names
University community paid homage to
Sr. Rosemarie’s eleven years of service
by raising a total of $160,000.
The enormity of the crowd in at-
tendance at the Rose Gala and the
overwhelming number of donations
collected are a testament to the vital
role Sr. Rosemarie assumed in shar-
ing the mission of HNU with the
greater Oakland/Bay Area community.
Throughout the Gala, accolades of
appreciation were echoed from every

after her husband died. As she reflected
on potential beneficiaries for the trust,

at Holy Names. Because she desired to
give back to the institution that gave
so much to her, Frances named the
University as a beneficiary of her Trust.

nan Hall and flanked by the Joyce and
Rodger Dobell Academic Wing to the
north and the Y & H Soda Foundation
Student Center Wing to the south, the
HEDCO Technology Support Center
(TSC) is the new, smart heart of the
Holy Names University campus. A
priority component of the $1.861 mil-
lion Student Center capital campaign,
the TSC links student and academic
services to meet the research and
instructional needs of both faculty and
students. Featuring wide screen Mac
computers, integrated multi-platform
technology, and geometric moveable
tables suited for flexible pedagogical
groupings or individual study, the TSC
is the University’s premier high-tech
collaborative learning environment.
All of the equipment acquired was
made possible by a generous grant from
The Fletcher Jones Foundation.
“When the renovation project came
about, we saw the project as an excel-
lent opportunity to not only upgrade
the community’s technological re-
sources, but also to create a visible,
accessible and creative space for faculty
and students” said Elena Olkhovskaya,
Ph.D., HNU Director of IT.
Since the TSC’s grand opening in
the spring of 2010, Elena’s team has
continued to receive an overwhelming
number of reservation requests from
students and faculty who use the new
facility for meetings, workshops and

classes. “One of the key concepts of the
Technology Support Center is flexibil-
ity. We designed it in such a way that
you can use desktops, notebooks, or
bring your own; it doesn’t matter. With
the SMART Board, you can share
presentations, but also have conferenc-
ing capabilities so that a student in the
back row can project their work from
their screen and share it with rest of the
class” shared Elena.
From a faculty perspective, the collab-
orative nature of the TSC is conducive
to sharing information with students
and discussing ideas instead of having
students huddling around one comput-
er screen. “I use the HEDCO Tech-
nology Support Center for lab-based
mathematics classes where I teach
two sections of Math, one traditional
lecture class and an online class featur-
ing ALEKS, an artificially intelligent
system that continually assesses each
student’s mastery of the course objec-
tives and prescribes an individualized
course of instruction,” commented
Christian Aviles-Scott, M.Ed, HNU
Lecturer in Mathematics. “By having
the students work in the Technology
Support Center, I can act as a one-on-
one tutor when necessary” he shared.

One Man’s Everlasting Gift to the Holy Names University Community
Throughout his life, the late
Neil W. McDaniel, Trustee Emeritus,
harnessed the power of philanthropy to
inspire others to achieve their dreams.
Student by student, campaign by cam-
paign, Neil’s contributions personified
the philanthropic might of the human
spirit, and its ability to imbue 21st cen-
tury academic excellence for the Holy
Names community.
Neil passed away peacefully on Sun-
day, September 5, 2010. His personal

Performing Arts campaign, the Science
Facilities Reconstruction Project, the
campaign for the newly-renovated
Student Center in Brennan Hall, the
Michael Feinstein Benefit Concerts,
the Annual Red Rose Golf Tourna-
ment benefiting the Mission Scholar-
ship Fund and the many scholarships
he funded.

The power of Neil’s philanthropy is
infectious; it spreads like a wild fire in
the generous ways it inspires individu-
als to achieve their best and to influ-
ence others. Take for example, Maria
Harrington ’04, founder of the Teach
English in Chiapas Project. Maria is
just one of several recipients of the
various scholarships Neil established.
Thanks to Neil’s generous support,
Maria and countless other HNU stu-
dents had the opportunity to embrace
the transformative Holy Names educa-
tional experience.

According to Maria, “I learned to be
not only a member, but also an activist

come, Neil’s generosity will continue
to be felt by the lives impacted by the
contributions of students like Maria.
In 2008, the University bestowed upon
Neil its highest community honor, the
Honorary Doctorate in Humane
Letters, recognizing his contributions
to the University. “Holy Names is

October 22, 1919 – November 3, 2010
We recognize and remember Ed (Edwin) Etienne Raphel, HNU Trustee and former
Regent, who passed way on November 3, 2010. A successful businessman, an hon-
orable War World II veteran, and charitable community leader, Ed’s contributions
helped to move forward the HNU mission for lifetimes to come. Ed was a devoted
leader behind multiple university initiatives, including supporting the recently estab-
lished Frieda Mary Nassif Endowment, the Valley Center for the Performance Arts
campaign, the Science Facilities Reconstruction Project, and the campaign for the newly renovated Student Center in
Brennan Hall. We are blessed to have benefited from Ed’s friendship. He is survived by Josephine, his wife of 63 years,
and their four children.
