NAME: COMPONENT PAINT FINISH REQUIREMENTS

1. SCOPE

This specification covers laboratory test requirements for 6 classes of paint

finishes as commonly used for automobile components.

1.1 In order for the component to meet the performance requirements of this
specification, the substrate material may require a suitable conversion
coating or primer application prior to topcoating.

1.2 Parts which are source primed and subsequently topcoated in Holden
assembly plants shall be capable of accepting the specified topcoat paint
system and meet the specified test requirements of this standard.

1.3 All test requirements of Section 4.3 are mandatory except for those
nominated as “Where Specified”. Those declared as “Where Specified”
are only required to be met if nominated on the relevant Engineering
Drawing.

1.4 The hardness of the paint film must resist marring as measured by the
thumbnail before and after all laboratory tests.

2. CLASSES OF PAINT FINISHES AND COMMON APPLICATIONS

A336 Normally applicable to exterior car components having a corrodible

substrate such as, plain steel, precoated steel and zinc, aluminium and
magnesium alloys.

A168 Normally applicable to chassis suspension components having steel

substrates.

A96 Normally applicable to exterior car components having a bright substrate

such as stainless steel, chromium plated metal or plastic and anodised
aluminium.

B336 Normally applicable to structural chassis and / or underhood components

such as, front and rear cross members.

2. CLASSES OF PAINT FINISHES AND COMMON APPLICATIONS (continued)

B168 Normally applicable to chassis and / or underhood components such as,

medium visibility non structural sheet metal parts.

B96 Normally applicable to non structural chassis and / or underhood

components such as, low visibility non structural sheet metal parts.

3. BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Parts applicable to this standard shall meet the test requirements shown in Table
1 for the class of finish specified.

4. TESTS

4.1 Unless otherwise specified, painted samples shall be subjected to the

required testing following a minimum ageing period of 72 hours after the
baking or drying cycle. A shorter ageing period may be used, provided it is
recognised that this represents a more severe condition of test.

4.2 Quality control tests are a routine series of tests which are to be run on
production parts as a means of ensuring part quality and / or process
quality. Frequency of these tests shall be based upon a statistical
sampling plan determined by the component supplier.
