Dear Janice,
How are you? I hope that you are in the pink of health.
My school recently organized a Say “No” To Plastic
Campaign .I have gained a lot of knowledge about the
plastic pollution. I would like to share some information
that related to it with you.
Our school organized the campaign last week to
create awareness among students about the hazards of
using plastic products. This campaign is officiated by our
school headmaster ,Encik Lam Dek Huan .This is because
he believes that every action of ours has an impact on the
environment. He want to encourage us to move out from
our comfort zone and putting up with a little
inconvenience to make the world a better place to live in.
Do you know that there are more than 1 million plastic
bags are used every minute, with an average "working life"
of only 15 minutes. If current consumption habits
continue, we're on pace to have discarded 12 billion tons
of plastic waste into landfills and our environment by
2050.How'd we get here? Two marketing strategies
employed by the plastics industry have successfully
propelled plastic to regular household which is promoting
throwaway culture .This strategy, along with the lack of
legislation preventing mass consumption, have caused
single-use plastics to flourish.

Plastic causes an overabundance of problems when

discarded into our environment. Plastics are typically
organic polymers of high molecular mass and often
contain other substances which is not biodegradable. It can
pollutes rivers and oceans . Plastic products are difficult
and costly to recycle and most end up on landfill sites
where they take around 300 years to photodegrade. They
break down into tiny toxic particles that contaminate
the soil and waterways and enter the food chain when
animals accidentally ingest them. Besides that , when
plastic enters the food cycle , animals carry microplastics
in their bodies. When they are themselves eaten, those
microplastics are also ingested. This process is called
‘trophic transfer’ of microplastics. Since one animal eats
another, microplastics can move through the food
chain. These problems often lead to a slow and painful
death.

There are ways and means to reduce plastic

pollution.Firstly, we can carry reusesable shopping bags
instead of plastic bags when we want to carry our products
home from the store. It is because using this method will
not only can help to reduce plastic pollution ,but also can
save our money and protect wildlife. Other than that ,we
also can use the 3R concept which is reuse, reduce, recyecle
to end plastic pollution. For an example ,we can recycle
the plastics you use and no longer need by return single-
use bags to grocery stores for them to recycle. With the
collective efforts of every human being living on the planet
,I believe that it would be easy to overcome this problems.

Our school had organized many activities to encourage

students stop using plastic products such as poster
drawing competition ,public speaking and quiz. I had took
part in the poster drawing competition and I had won the
first prize. I was as happy as a lark and I hope that there
will be more and more people that willing to practicse an
eco-friendly lifestyle to protect our environment in the
future.
Well, I have said everything there is to say.
Environmentalists are constantly reminding us of the need
to curb global warming and conserve our environment. I
hope that both of us can make fundamental changes to
our lifestyle to protect our earth. Bye.
Your friend,
Elizabeth Tan
