1. Sedrakyan, A., Herbert, P., Vaccarino, V., Paltiel, A. D., Elefteriades, J. A.,
Mattera, J., Lin, Z., Roumanis, S. A., Krumholz, H. M. (2004).
Quality of Life After Aortic Valve Replacement With Tissue and
Mechanical Implants. Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery,
128(2), 266-72.

In this article, Sedrakyan et al discuss a study they performed pertaining to

aortic valve replacement. The study was conducted 126 patients; roughly half
had tissue valve implants and the other half received mechanical valve
implants. The results and progress of the patient were measured multiple
times over the course of 18 months, comparing tissue and mechanical valve
implants to see which was more effective in aortic valve replacement. This
article is mostly directed toward other researchers trying to investigate heart
valve implants. It is also directed towards PhD and graduate students to
assist in order to assist in medical research and to inform those who are
interested of the study that they performed. This way, their data can be
shared and can aid in other experimental procedures.

2. Stassano, P., Di Tommaso, L., Monaco, M., Lorio, F. Pepino, P.,

Spampinato, N., Vosa, C. (2009). Aortic Valve Replacement: a
Prospective Randomized Evaluation of Mechanical versus
Biological Valves in Patients Ages 55 to 70 Years. Journal of the American
College of Cardiology, 54(20), 1862-8.

The study in this article assesses the long-term results of mechanical heart
valves and bioprosthetic heart valves in middle aged patients. Both types
were used to replace the aortic valve, the main heart valve in the body. The
Fisher exact test, along with other means of assessment, was used to
measure the outcome of each type of heart valve over the span of 13 years.
The results of these tests help to determine the suitability of each heart valve
and the circumstances for which they should be used. This article is
prominently used as a reference for other articles or research papers.
Primarily, older college students (graduate students), professors and medical
research personnel would read the article.

3. DeRouin, Andrew. Personal Communications. 18 Jan. 2011.

Andrew is a Graduate student at Michigan Technological University in the

field of biomedical engineering. He says that he has most commonly seen
APA citation style used in journal articles in this field. There are many popular
journals used in Biomedical Engineering research including IEEE Sensors
Journal. Andrew reported that the scholarly journals are mainly used for peer-
reviewing and read by researchers, scientists and graduate students.
Biomedical engineering uses charts, graphs, diagrams and photographs
extensively according to Andrew. Almost every article contains many visuals.
