“Two hundred years have now elapsed since this Restoration was initiated by
God the Father and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ.”
Ever since then - “Millions throughout the world have embraced a
knowledge of these prophesied events.”
It is our goal to share with you some of the physical artifacts, books, photos, and
documents that have not only survived since the beginning of the Restoration
of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but have also brought us great joy and assisted in
strengthening our testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ.

1880’s Antique Albumen Print of Heinrich Hofman’s “Jesus in The Temple” - Autographed by
Heinrich Hofman (10”x 7.5”)
Hofman has captivated Christian audiences all over the world with his paintings of the scenes
in the life of Jesus Christ. Adding his personal touch and autograph to this piece brings a more
intimate meaning to a religious art collector.
“Few scenes from the youth of Christ are so well known or beloved as Hofmann’s rendition of
Luke 2: 46-47, Jesus in the Temple. Even Hofmann’s harshest critic judged this painting, “the
most pleasing among the many representations of the subject.” Consequently, this painting’s
continued popularity has led to a vast number of reproductions.
As with many of Hofmann’s paintings, the narrative is more significant than the representation
of a historically accurate setting. Here, only the classical columns and Seal of Solomon on the
chair suggest a temple location. Of greater interest are the figures’ physiognomies, gestures
and how they interact with the “precocious” country boy from Nazareth.
Contrary to taking a cynical anti-Semitic approach to the Jewish figures, Hofmann’s elders are
individuals the viewers can relate to and question their own spiritual sensitively. The ethereal
beauty of the 12-year-old Christ contrasts markedly with the more corporeal, yet exquisitely
painted, elders of the Jerusalem temple. In his lifetime many people questioned who the mod-
el was for this prodigy Christ. Hofmann responded, “When I read about Christ in the Bible,
there arises spontaneously before my fancy a picture of Him which I try to retain and to re-
produce-that is my only prototype.” This vision of the Savior arose from an artistic and deeply
devote mind.
Jesus in the Temple quickly found its place in the collection of one of Dresden’s foremost art
museums. During the intensive bombing of Dresden during World War II the painting was
moved into the countryside for preservation. After the war tastes had changed and the painting
was not rehung.

Other Sheep I Have depicts the appearance of the resurrected Messiah to people who
inhabited ancient America at the time of His crucifixion and resurrection from the dead. As
recorded in the Book of Mormon, the resurrected Messiah appeared to a multitude of people
gathered at the site of a temple in a land then known as Bountiful, and invited them to come
forward, one by one, that each person might affirm for his or her self that He was, indeed, the
Messiah of whom the prophets had testified and written.
The figure of the Savior appears clothed in white, as described in the ancient account. It is
devoid of shadow and casts its own light on the figure of the woman. Such powerful
whiteness is also described in the ancient narrative: And his countenance did smile upon them,
and the light of his countenance did shine upon them, and behold they were as white as the
countenance and also the garments of Jesus; and behold the whiteness thereof did exceed all the
whiteness, yea, even there could be nothing upon earth so white as the whiteness thereof
(3 Nephi 19:25).
The rock upon which the Savior is depicted as standing is intended to remind the viewer that
He speaks of Himself as the Rock of Heaven (see Moses 7:53) and, as one ancient American
disciple declared: Remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the
Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds,
yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it
shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the
rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they
cannot fall (Helaman 5:12).
The grasses and wildflowers surrounding the figures bloom in the purest white, typifying the
surety of the resurrection and the hope of eternal life.
The painting was completed in September 2014 Details about the building of the frame.
and placed in the Church’s 2015 exhibit called
“Tell Me The Stories of Jesus”.

An influential newspaper printed in Nauvoo, Times and Seasons chronicled the day-to-day
efforts of the Latter-day Saints to spread the gospel message. It also contained the first
appearances of Joseph Smith’s personal history, the Book of Abraham, and the Wentworth
Letter. Much truth about the Saints and their time in Nauvoo prevails in these volumes, the
joy of building a city and the sorrow of then having to abandon it.

This copy was owned and signed by Christopher Merkley. Christopher Merkley was baptized in 1837 by John
Paige and moved to Nauvoo in the summer of 1840. After John Paige published his hymnal with John Cairns,
Merkley published his own 32-page hymnal in 1841. He was a member of the Allen Taylor Pioneer Company
in 1849 and was one of the rescuers that were sent out by Brigham Young in the winter of 1856 to save the
members of the Church stranded in Wyoming. A beautiful copy.
Benjamin Brown (1794- 1878) was baptized in May 1835 and served several missions in the East-
ern States. He moved to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1839 and in 1843 he was called to preach in Nova Scotia.
Brown was bishop at Winter Quarters (1846-1848).
In 1852 he was called on a mission to England where he published Testimonies for the Truth
Both volumes are complete. Some foxing throughout the text block.
Rubbing on the cover, more prominent on the corners and joints.
Following the fall General Conference in 1852, Orson Pratt was called
to preside over the Eastern mission and to publish a periodical defending
Mormon theology and practices, particularly polygamy. Pratt covered
many doctrinal issues, including Celestial Marriage and the
Preexistence. Brigham Young thought some of the ideas discussed were
poorly conceived, and had the publication cease operation. In 1865, The
Church of Latter-day Saints disowned the writings saying, “The Seer
contains doctrines which we cannot sanction, and which we have felt
impressed to disown, so that the Saints who now live, and who may live
hereafter, may not be misled by our silence, or be left to misinterpret it.
Where these objectionable works, or parts of works, are bound in
volumes, or otherwise, they should be cut out and destroyed.”

Called at the April 1854 general conference to St. Louis and Cincinnati, Erastus Snow and Orson Spencer
arrived in St. Louis on August 28. At that point, St. Louis was a major way station for the European
Mormon emigrants, who sailed from Liverpool to New Orleans, went up the Mississippi to St. Louis, and
from St. Louis to a staging area on the Mississippi or Missouri River. It seems clear that Erastus Snow
came to St. Louis with the intention of establishing a newspaper, pursuant to instructions from Brigham
Young. On September 5, he presented this idea and received the council’s vote to sustain the undertaking.
A prospectus was issues on October 12, and on November 22, 1854 the paper began. It ran for 52 issues

The 10th European Edition of the LDS Hymnal was printed on request by
Brigham Young in 1853. Printing was completed in England in early 1854
and shipped in its entirety to Utah. It was printed in England since it was
cheaper to print, bind and ship from there than it was to do it in New York.
However the shipping took almost a year because it arrived in St Louis too
late in the season to make it across the plains on wagons, so the 1854 edition
didn’t actually hit shelves until 1855.
Cover has wear on boards, edges and spine. Slight foxing throughout the

Cyril Call was introduced to the Book of Mormon in 1832 and baptized soon after. He contributed
financially and physically to the construction of the Kirtland temple, and recieved his Patriarchal
Blessing from Joseph Smith Sr., who was the father of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Call also help settle Far
West, Nauvoo - where he and his family were sealed, and finally Salt Lake City. Facing great hardship and
trials in each of his homes.
Some interesting information shared by Call’s granddaughter: “He was not blind in one eye as so many
people believed he was because of the photograph we have of him, but rather he had a paralyzed or
drooping heavy eyelid. He would take his finger and raise the eyelid and use the eye with the other one.”

The first Salt Lake edition of the Hymnal (14th official edition) marked the
beginning of much printing in the Salt Lake Valley. George Q Cannon and
his sons would become extremely well known and would go on to print
thousands of volumes over the next decades, partially since they built and
ran their own foundry allowing them to create their own type, such as was
used in this Hymnal. 10,000 copies were printed and offered in a variety of
bindings. This particular edition exists in 3 states, the latter having been
reset and corrections made. Timing for these later states is unknown. This
edition included 14 new hymns, including Eliza R Snow’s “How Great the
Wisdom and the Love”.

140. 1891 - Joseph F. Smith’s first 50 shares of the Saltair Beach Company [$3500]
The original Saltair Beach Company was an ambitious project with the purpose of building a
wholesome recreational vacation resort for Utahns.
These shares were issued to President Joseph F. Smith - Second Counselor in the First Presidency
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nephew of Joseph Smith, the original founder).
He later became President of the church in 1901. These are of the earliest shares in The Saltair
Beach Company that were issued in 1891 when the company was formed, and before construction
began. Smith was a Vice President in the newly formed company, and he was issued these 50 shares
(A near $50,000 valuation in 2020). This specific certificate is No. 12 of the print run. He signed
the certificate several times, along with Elder George Q. Cannon, John R. Winder, and Nephi W.
Clayton.
The Great Saltair was a major part of Utah History, making this piece a significant piece of
ephemera for Utah and the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

187. Eleven-Year $1,000 Bond at 6% interest in gold coin. No. B347. Issued by The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Includes 50 cent battleship documentary revenue stamp as required by U.S.
Tax Act of 1898 for indemnity bonds. Signed by Lorenzo Snow (Trustee-in-Trust) with his familiar
purple pencil.
By 1898 the debt of the Church approximated $2.3 million, much of it a result of the provisions of the
Edmunds-Tucker Act of 1887 which allowed the federal government to escheat Church assets, including
tithing funds. The First Presidency offered two $500,000 bond issues in order to address indebtedness.
Half the issue was immediately taken up by three Mormon banks in the city, the State, the Deseret
National, and the Deseret Savings banks.
On January 10, 1907, President Joseph F. Smith announced that the church was entirely free of debt, with
the payment of the last two $500,000 bond issues sold by President Lorenzo Snow. Although the issued
bond was helpful, paying off the Church’s debts was largely due to the renewed emphasis on tithing.
This document came from the estate of Joseph F. Smith through his son, Calvin Smith, to the daughter of
Calvin Smith.
