PATTERN NOTES

All slipped stitches should be slipped as if to purl.

When working the charts, make sure that you knit

loosely to ensure that the stranded parts will fit
over your heel and be legible when worn. If necessary, touch up with duplicate stitch any hard-to-read
bits. Also, pay attention to yarn dominance.1 I held the black yarn dominant for Chart A and the blue
yarn dominant for Chart B.

Abbreviations

YO3 - Yarn over 3 times.

s1wyib - slip one stitch with yarn held in back.
K tbl - Knit through back loop (twisting the stitch)
K2Tog - Knit two stitches together
P2Tog - Purl two stitches together
SSK - Slip 1 as if to knit, slip 1 as if to knit, insert the left needle into the front of the slipped stitches, then
knit them together (your right needle will be through the back loops of each).

For excellent visuals of all techniques, and instructions on grafting, I cannot recommend the website
knittinghelp.com strongly enough. It was through the videos on the site that I learned to knit at all.

Knit 11, place marker.

The marker should be placed at the center of the heel, which will be the beginning of your round for the
rest of the pattern.

Heel Gusset:

Note: I find that I rearrange stitches a fair bit during the gusset-shaping process. Directions are provided
for magic loop as to when stitches should be on the shaft of the needle and when they should be on
the cable, but, frankly, I'm not good at following my own directions here. Whether you use Magic Loop,
DPNS, or 2 circs, the important thing is that you know where your picked-up stitches are, where your heel
stitches are, and where your instep stitches are. I strongly advise placing markers to separate gusset
and instep stitches.

Pickup Stitches for Gusset

k 11.
With the tip of the needle, pick up and knit 19 stitches along the edge of the heel flap.

Pick up and knit 1 stitch from the Round below the first instep stitch to prevent a hole.

Slide stitches to cable, move the instep stitches to the needle shaft, and knit across the 36 instep
stitches.

Place Marker.

Slide all stitches to cable and, with the tip of the needle, pickup and knit 1 stitch from the

Round below the first instep stitch to prevent a hole.

Pickup and knit 19 stitches along the edge of the heel.

Knit to end of round.
