MODULE TWO :
BUSINESS FIRMS AND
GLOBALIZATION
To start you off : How does globalization affect the daily operations of firms
in your area? (positively or negatively)
This can only be effected by making inroads into foreign markets. In other words,
for such firms, going global is a necessary strategy.
Some companies will concentrate on their core business and try to develop it first
at home, and then abroad, by setting up foreign operators.
But, economic circumstances do not always make this easy. Growth may also be

stay, and firms, whether small, medium-sized or large, must gear their strategy to a
changing world market

MODULE THREE :
THE NATURE OF
COMMERCE
17
To start you off : How do you think commercial activities are important in the
satisfaction of peoples needs?
10
Of all commercial occupations, the most important is trade; the buying and
selling of goods. Traders are the prime movers of production, giving orders for
goods which set manufacturers to work. Wholesale traders buy raw materials or
manufactured goods in large quantities. Retail traders buy smaller quantities from
wholesalers, or direct from manufacturers and sell direct to the public. Both
15
wholesale and retail traders are engaged in home trade, i.e. trade within the
confines of political boundary.
Much trade, however, is undertaken with other countries; we call this foreign
trade. This may be import trade, the bringing in of goods from abroad, or export
trade, the dispatch abroad of home-produced goods.

resort to the services of an advertising agency. Help can also be asked from
independent advertising consultants. A new product will be advertised to the public
after being given a brand name; a products or a group of products name is
generally protected through a registered trademark.
There are several forms of advertising among which the most common are direct
15
mail, the press, radio, television, posters, special occasions and the internet. Direct
mail consists in sending information direct to prospective customers by using mailing
lists. The press includes all newspapers, journals and special magazines. Posters are
displayed on advertisement hoardings or billboards, along roads or on buses.
Advertisement on radio or on television are called "commercials". They are the most
20
effective, but also the most costly, depending on the slot or when broadcast during
prime time. Special occasions can be shows, launches, press conferences,
exhibitions and fairs. Websites and promotional e-mails are some of the latest media
of advertising. In addition, products may also be advertised through their packaging
and through merchandising methods such as effective displaying on shelves in retail

MODULE FIVE :
INTERNATIONAL
MARKETING
39
To start you off : In your opinion, what is the role of the marketing department in a
company? Why?
INTERNATIONAL MARKETING
Having made a product the problem becomes to find someone who will buy it. It
is the responsibility of the marketing department to promote and organise the
sale of the product to the purchaser. Broadly speaking, activities such as sales
promotion, advertising and market research are covered.
05
To illustrate, it would be possible for the factory simply to produce a motor car
and then hope that it sells. However, it takes a long time to set up a production
line for a car assembly plant and even minor modifications can prove difficult
and expensive. It is much better to discover what people are looking for when
they buy a car and then try to satisfy their needs. Do car drivers want speed or
10
safety? Are they looking for the power to accelerate or comfort? Is their aim to
impress their neighbours and other road users, or are they just concerned with
getting from A to B and back? How important is the price, and the cost of petrol
and maintenance? Which designs or colours are preferred? Who is buying the
car? Is it a company or an individual? It is questions like these the marketing

arrive? It becomes obvious that making and selling are two facets of the same
undertaking.
