Now in its third year, Uptown Wipeout calls for volunteers to take action
against graffiti in their neighborhoods.

The 2010 Uptown Wipeout, a community graffiti cleanup coordinated

by the Uptown Association, will take place Friday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. with check-in located at the YWCA on Hennepin Avenue. The
event is an opportunity for community members to unite and wipe out
graffiti in Uptown, while sprucing up the neighborhood. The City of
Minneapolis and the Uptown Association will provide all necessary sup-
plies including paint, gloves, trash bags, graffiti remover and safety vests.
Participants will also enjoy complimentary refreshments on-site and will
receive a free paint T-shirt.

Since 2008, when the City of Minneapolis Department of Solid Waste

and Recycling awarded the Uptown Association a $10,000 grant, the or-
ganization has taken an active role in graffiti prevention. Efforts have
included education events, youth programming and numerous Uptown
Wipeout clean ups. In 2009, such projects resulted in a 78% reduction of
graffiti tags in Uptown between the months of May and November.

Graffiti, however, is an ongoing problem and the community must con-

tinue to send the message to taggers that their vandalism won’t be toler-
ated. According to the City of Minneapolis, rapid removal is one of the
keys to prevention. In addition, they site reporting suspicious behavior to
911, educating children about having pride in one’s community and or-

McKay met with the minister of
Joyce United Methodist Church,
Rev. John Darlington, to present
her plan of Created to Overcome
being “a Christ-centered church
in which the presence of God is
always manifested; a place of faith,
restoration and liberation” and the
values of honesty, integrity, unity,
love and cooperation are taught.
When she asked to use space in
their building, Darlington and
Joyce leadership agreed to wel-
come the new congregation.

Services are held on Tuesdays from

6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Sundays
from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Pastor Walter Agosto of Faith

Cathedral in Caguas, Puerto Rico
will be conducting a special semi-
nar on Friday May 14 from 7:00
p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday May
15 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
and Sunday May 16 from 5:00
p.m. to 7:00 p.m. “The last day of
your past” is the title of the confer-
ence that will be in English and
Spanish. Agosto is a well known
internal healing and motivational
speaker. There is no charge for the
seminar.

McKay was living in the Domini-

can Republic where she was rais-
ing her family and running a
successful business with her sister.
Religion wasn’t a significant part
of her life until a business crisis in
1995 forced her to reevaluate her
priorities. In the course of start-
ing a church she met a man from
Minnesota who she married just
over a year ago and moved from
the Dominican Republic with her
children.
