manufacturing firm Pepsi-Cola Products
Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) is advancing
talks with the International Finance
Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm
of the World Bank Group, for financing
on its proposed energy efficiency (EE)
initiatives.

plan would be to go ‘green’ not only
in their on-the-fence power genera-
tion facilities but also in their energy
consumption.

O PTIMISTIC on Northern
Mindanao’s robust exports
industry, the Mindanao
Container Terminal (MCT) is ex-
pecting significant increase in cargo
volume passing through this port
throughout 2011.
In a statement, MCT port manager Dante Clar-
ito said they are looking at around 10 to 20 percent
higher cargo volume than that of last year.
“We are banking such growth to the strong
performance of our base clients, like Nestle, Del
Monte and Pilipinas Kao and our new clients from
the woodcraft industry,” Clarito said.
Clarito said banana exporters, as well as
importers of raw materials, are also expected to
increase their shipments this year, which will all
be handled at MCT, operated by the country’s
largest port operator, the International Container
Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI).
“MCT is also expecting our current direct
callers to deploy larger vessels or increase their
frequency this year that will result to more cargo
space for Philippine-based importers and export-
ers,” Clarito said.
Since ICTSI took over the operations of the
MCT some two years ago, the cargo volume of the
facility in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental continues
to improve.

ebrating its 81st Founding

January 10-14, 2011 at the

The week-long occasion
showcased numerous ac-
tivities and contests, ranging
from a Flower Arrangement
Contest, a Forum on Climate
Change, an Agri-Pasiklaban
Contest, the Pinaka-Taas
ug Pinakalami nga Cas-
sava Linusak Contest and
among others. However, the
event’s major highlight was
the Tabo sa Umahan VII, an
exhibit of premium agricul-
tural and fisheries products
and other locally produced
commodities from each of
the province’s participating
municipalities.
Staying true to the agri-
cultural flavor to the event,
Usec. Rudinas served as
the guest speaker during
its opening program. In
his speech, he revealed the
department’s current frame-
work referred to as Agri-
Pinoy, in which it seeks to
drive agricultural develop-
ment in our country.
“Agri-Pinoy is not just
another flagship program
or gimmick. It is a vigor-
ous campaign in achieving
broad-based agricultural
growth and rural develop-
ment in the recognition that
would help emancipate the
stakeholders from the bond-
age of poverty, hopelessness,
hunger and despair,” Usec
Rudinas disclosed.
He also mentioned coun-
termeasures to ensure food
security and self-sufficiency,
and it includes: regular face-
to-face dialogue between
the DA and its agricultural
stakeholders; restoration
of public trust to the agen-
cy and the government, in
general; beefing-up of ru-
ral infrastructure build-
up through Public-Private
Partnership; and lessening
rice dependency in the next
two years.
In response to the good
turnout of the festivity, Usec.
Rudinas acknowledged the
province’s unwavering efforts.

the municipality they were able
to construct such project. He
challenged the whole community
especially the Barangay Captains
and their constituents that each of
them should take full responsibil-
ity for the maintenance of said
project since it is them who will
benefit from it.
In his acceptance speech,
Mayor Gumahin expressed his
gratitude for the assistance DA
has extended to them of which
their municipality have longed
desire to alleviate poverty in the
rural areas.
He noted that without DA’s
help, their municipality wouldn’t
be able to come up with the
facilities considering that their
area is labeled as sixth class
municipality. “Said intervention is

You might have flown
on an airplane before, and

azukar variety, not Sugar-pie

You might be wondering
why I’m making a beeline for
the sugar cane instead of the
lover’s lane. Recently, I had
the privilege of attending
an interesting scientific lec-
ture at the Liceo de Cagayan
University. It was delivered
by an esteemed friend from
my youth, Dr. Ronaldo P.
Ferraris, brother of my dear
friend Aida. During my
freshman year at Xavier Uni-
versity, Rony was the editor-
in-chief of The Crusader, the
official magazine of Xavier U.
I was one of his features writ-
ers. He used to call me Gual
(for Gualberto) or sometimes,
Maldits. Yikes! He already
had flashes of a brilliant sci-
entific mind then, because
he was able to assess my
temperament correctly. He
is now a professor of Phar-
macology and Physiology at
the University of Medicine
and Dentistry of New Jersey,

My visit to Cagayan de Oro

NORTHERN Mindanao is
the Adventure Tourism Capi-
tal of the Philippines. When
you visit the city, tour guides
will offer you white river
rafting, horse back riding,
mountaineering, zip lines,
rapelling, forest canopy walk-
ing and other adrenaline
rushing activities for a fee,
of course.
There is another one
thrilling adventure that you
can encouter daily to surely
make your heart leap con-
stantly and will give you the
adventure of your lifetime.
This free adventure is what I
call “Driving In Cagayan de
Oro’s Traffic”.
In this adventure you have
to be alert, well-coordinated
and must have a truckload
of patience. Try this chal-
lenge and you will know
what I mean. Sadly for the
adventure seeker, there is a
group of concerned citizens
in Cagayan de Oro calling
themselves “Campaigners For
Traffic Courtesy And Disci-
pline”. If they succeed, this
type of adventure will end.
Really, I wish them success
because I already have too
much of this adventure.
Then there are those
brave pedestrians crossing
the streets or even highways
without looking left or right
the way we were taught in
grade school how to cross the
street. It’s the driver who has
to maneuver out of the way
of the pedestrian. Adding to
the thrill are those daredevil
motorcyclists who just weave

The city is trembling un-
controllably with commercial
constructions everywhere
oblivious of any zoning regu-
lations or do they exist?
Probably, but whether
they are implemented or not
is anybody’s guess. The prog-
ress of the city, if you can call
it “progress” is unstoppable.
It’s good and it’s bad depend-
ing who you are and what
you do.
The flip-flop, shorts and
undershirt motorela and

where when you are outside
the city poblacion whatever
that means. These operators
whose ages must be from
their pre-teens to retirees
must go on with their busi-
ness because they have fami-
lies to feed and therefore must
not be denied to continue
doing what they are doing.
But they should also pity
their riders and the city itself
by taking a shower, use de-
odorants and wear shoes. This
is where the civic clubs of the
city can come in by providing
them with respectable cloth-
ing and shoes.
Would it not be pleas-
ing to the eyes to see them
in uniform and even more
pleasing if their contraptions
are of the same color? Why
they will be an added tourism
attraction.
Speaking of tourism,
lechon manok eateries are
sprouting everywhere. This
is replacing the pineapple
as the signature product of
the city.
Pineapple really belongs
to Bukidnon while the city’s
chicken inasal is truly kagay-
anon. A few eateries, I’ve
noticed boast that they have
Bacolod’s lechon manok. I
wonder if in Bacolodthey also
boast our “Cagayan de Oro
Lechon Manok”.
I also went to Malaybalay
City. After their Kagawad’s
session, I joined them for
lunch. The kagawads there
belong to different parties
and what impressed me most
was the camaraderie among
themselves. I didn’t observe
any animosity or backbiting
among themselves. Souldn’t
that be the case in Cagayan
de Oro’s kagawads?

but not as much I can see in
my kids today!
I only finished grade 6 in
my Chinese school. I can still
read basic Chinese characters
in Mandarin and I can say I
can still speak fluently the
Fookien dialect (which is
most of the Chinoys in the
Philippines uses) and it does
help in the business sector.

I bet almost every family does

government physician. She likewise prays for the correction of the
spelling of her mother’s name from “Marjore” to “MARJORIE”.

Destinations of Region X
along with Regions 1X and
X111 will be the next target
for eco-tourism biodiversity
officials in the region.
The RDC, chaired by Di-
polog City mayor Evelyn Uy,
passed a resolution that called
on all cities and provinces in
the region to help Dapitan
City for a successful staging
of the national games. Zam-
boanga Peninsula is com-
posed of the cities of Isabela,
Zamboanga, Dipolog, Dapi-
tan, and Pagadian; and the
provinces of Zamboanga del
Norte, Zamboanga del Sur,
and Zamboanga Sibugay.
City councilor Apple Ma-
rie Agolong, chair of the
committee on tourism of the
city council, revealed that
the provincial government of
Zamboanga del Norte already
committed P50-million to
support the national games;
Zamboanga Sibugay, P20-
million; and Zamboanga del
Sur, P10-million while Paga-
dian City pledged to provide
logistical support in terms of
vehicle.

Jae Ho Lee, Head of General
Affair, and Dr. Juliet E. Fancubit,
principal, lead the students, faculty
a n d s t a ff t o w e l c o m e t h e
beneficiaries who were personally
accompanied by their parents,
guardians and staff of the PSMFI.
They were fetched from their
boarding house to Nanuri
International School where the
yearly affair is being held.
The children whose ages
ranges from 1 to 21 years old are
suffering from different disabilities
such as cerebral palsy, autism,
down syndrome, mental

aiming to produce God-fearing,

The Pathfinder's Club of Nanuri
International School led the outreach
activity which was held at the river
island of Puntod, Balulang, Cagayan
de Oro City last December 18, 2010,

The highlight of the program
was the giving of gifts and snacks to
all special children by the Nanuri
students who personally prepared it,
aside from the gifts given by the
administration. The Nanurian
demonstrated the true meaning of
Christmas, that is “NANURI” a
Korean word for sharing, but more
than these, the students, faculty, and
staff showed the love of our
fellowmen, especially with God's
special children. As the Lord said in
Matt. 25:40, and I quote, “and the
King shall answer and say unto them,
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye
have done it unto one of the least of
these my unto one of the least of these
with the selfless cooperation of the
Balulang S.D.A. Church members
which accommodated more than
100 children recipient and 22
parents. These respondents are the
less fortunate, who felt elevated
when they received Christmas gifts
from the civic minded individual,
from the students of Nanuri, from
NIS Administrators, and parent, Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Perez who donated
eleven boxes of goodies that were
also distributed during the activity.
They came with big smile on
their faces, expecting and
anticipating nice things they could
received as the program went on.
Their smiles eventually became
laughter's of joy when they received

Nanuri Extends
help to
flood Victims

that swept and rendered
many residents homeless.
On October 11, 2010, the
heavy downpour in the
area resulted to the
overflow of Lawndale
Springs and caused
destruction of the houses and
inflicted great damage to
the crops and properties of
the residents and even
accounted for the death of a

They received clothing, foods and toys
that they said they never had. Most of
the parents expressed openly their
gratitude by standing in front of the
group with the microphone and told us
how thankful they were and wished
more outreach programs to come, not
only for the people of Puntod, Balulang
but for the others as well.
The outreach program of the
Nanuri International School has been
active for the last 5 years and has
helped many beneficiaries of Cagayan
de Oro. More outreach activity similar
to this is expected from NIS
Pathfinders Club. We adhere to the
name of the school which speaks for

Sacks of rice, noodles, canned goods and
other relief items were brought to the site
by the students, teachers and the
coordinators. The School Principal, Dr.

Sumicad; and the School Registrar, Mrs.
Myrna Cabugatan, supervised the
distribution of the relief goods. The
Nanurians have been actively involved
in the community service projects and
are always trying to be in the frontline in
demonstrating the spirit of SHARING.

Nanurians are encouraged to show the
essence of Christianity through active
outreach programs in helping the
disadvantaged and underserved members
