I would start this note with a apology for taking so long to issue a Newsletter. The fact is that while we are half-
way through the summer holidays, we the Council of the MAAA have had no holidays at all. We have
continued with our events and are making preparations to send our athletes to various competitions abroad.
In fact one of these competitions is precisely the Youth Commonweath Games. This event naturally comes
under the jurisdiction of the Matlese Olympic Committee and we are doing our utmost to ensure that our
young athletes will return with postive results. With the financial assistance of the MOC we would be bringing
to Malta the well known British sprints coach Mr. Mike Macfarlane for a week, starting on Monday 8th
September. Mike is not expected to Coach our athletes but we hope that we would be able, together with the
Coaches of the selected athletes, to fine tune their final preparations. We are planning to take advantage of
Mike’s visit to Malta to hold a seminar for Caoches which is scheduled to be held on the 13th of September.
In this issue of our Newsletter you can read about an IAAF Level One Coaches Lecturers Course. This is the
first time that the IAAF has accepted to hold such a course here in Malta. The ideas is for us to have a few local
Lecturers (apart from Ms. Lara Gerada who is already so qualified ) who can conduct an IAAF Level One
Coaching Course. The IAAF Level One Coaching Course is the Kid Athletics Course. The Course is being held
between the 3rd and 10th of September and will be a full time course covering about 35 hours.
In this issue you will be finding find the full results of the FISEC Games. These games have now gained a lot of
popularity in Malta and we too, as an Association, are giving our assistance to ensure that these games are not
only organsied at a professional level, but also to see that these games provide our young athletes with another
opportunity to help them improve their standard and act as a motivation towards greater efforts.
I can imagine that most of us would be spending the next couple of weeks in front of our TV following the
Beijing Olympic Games. Our thoughts, our hopes and concersn are for naturally for Charlene Attard and
Nicolai Portelli, but we would naturally like to see the other four local representatives produce postive results
in these games.
Yours in sport ,
Anthony Chircop

Charlene Attard and Nicolai Portelli
Representing Malta in Athletics
at the Beijin Olympic Games - 2008
As every reader of this Newsletter knows, Malta is being represented, in athletics, by Charlene
Attard and Nicolai Portelli who will be running in the 100m and the 200m respectively.
Both Charlene and Nicolai will be making their debut in the Olympics for the first time – a dream
come true for two young athletes who have worked so hard for so long to win the right to represent
Malta in our sport.
We may all agree that in athletics we have made a lot of progress these last then years, however, we
must also admit that we still have a long way to go before we can say that we can compete for
honours at the Olympics. What we do know and are confident of is that our two brave athletes will
both be giving their very best to justify their selection by registering a good time in their respective
event.
We wish them both every success and we shall all be watching out to see them compete.
Charlene will be competing on the Saturday 16th August at 3.50am ( Malta time ) while Nicolai race is
scheduled for the Monday 18th August at 3.50am (Malta time).
2
Mr Leandros Calleja was selected by the MAAA to accompany the two athletes in Beijing.
The MAAA will be organising an IAAF CECS (Coaching Education Certificate System) Level
I Lecturers’ Course between the 3rd and 8th of September 2008. The organisation of this
course will in future allow the MAAA to organise its own IAAF Level I (New System)
Coaching Courses.
Entry forms may be obtained by writing to the MAAA General Secretary on maaa@onvol.net
or eattard@waldonet.net.mt by not later than 25th August. The course fee is 50 euros and
cheques should be made payable to the Malta Amateur Athletic Association
On the basis of the result, the participants will be graded into the following categories:
1. IAAF Lecturer (certified to conduct international and national IAAF CECS Level I
Coaches Courses.
2. IAAF National Lecturer (certified to conduct national IAAF CECS Level I Coaches’
Courses.
3. National Kids Instructors

COMMONWEALTH YOUTH GAMES
PUNE, INDIA – 12th to the 18th October , 2008
The Maltese Olympic Committee had invited the Malta Amateur Athletic Association to select
four male and four female youth athletes to represent Malta in the Commonweath Youth Games
which are being held in Pune, India, between the 12th and the 18th October, 2008.
The Association had waited up till the FISEC Games to see whom to select for these games.
The MAAA, in collaboration with the Maltese Olympic Committee, has made arrangments
to bring over to Malta the well known and popular British sprints coach Mike McFarlane in
the week starting Monday 8th September. The idea is for Mike to be able to watch our athletes
train and to see, after discussing with the athletes Coaches, if he can propose some changes
to help improve the athlete’s performance.

European Championship Masters Records
Establised in Ljubljana 2008
( preliminary list after all ten competition days )
Now in Ljubljana we saw more new records being established when compared
with the latest EVACS in Poznan 2006 when it was totally 10 World Records,
21 European Records and 94 Championship Records.
Most records ever in EVACS:s history was set up in Aarhus/Randers 2004 with
45 World Records, 64 European Records and 181 Championship Records. It is
far more records compared with now in Ljubljana and it will be hard in
future to exceed these figures from 2004.
I am hereunder listing all the records that were established at the Ljubljana Meeting
