INTRODUCTION

The general purpose of the Mercury-Redstone program is to advance

the qualification of the capsule and capsule systems for the specifi-
cation Mercury mission during ballistic space flight and to familiarize
and train the astronauts for the subsequent orbiting flights.

The MR-3 mission is the third in the Redstone-boosted program and

the first in the series of manned capsules. The astronaut will be
subjected to the g loadings during boost and reentry and to a short
period of weightless flight at the orbiting altitude of the specifi-
cation mission. The specific objectives of this mission are as
follows:

First-order test objectives.-

(a) Familiarize man with a brief but complete space flight

experience including the lift-off, powered flight, weightless
flight (for a period of approximately 5 minutes), entry, and
landing phases of the flight.

(b) Evaluate man's ability to perform as a functional unit

during space flight by: .

(1) Demonstrating manual control of capsule attitude

before> during, .and after retrofire.

(2) Use of voice communications during flight.

(c) Study man's physiological reaction during space flight.

(d) Recover the astronaut and capsule.

Second-order test objectives.- Continue qualification of the

Mercury capsule and capsule systems for manned flight.

Third-order test objectives.- Provide training for ground support

and recovery forces for future manned flights.

The MR-3 flight will be along the Atlantic Missile Range on a

heading of 105° true. The Mercury Network Stations at Cape Canaveral,
Florida (Mercury Control, Center) and at Washington, D...C.. (Space
Computing Center) will be utilized, and the Bermuda Station will be
used for training. . .

The nominal weights for the MR-3 capsule are:

Condition Weight (Ib)

Gross weight at lift-off (includes adapter and

escape tower)
Weight after separation from Redstone 2,855
Weight at start of reentry 2,579
Flotation weight 2,316
The instrumentation on capsule no. 7 is standard instrumentation,
which includes aeromedical information. The EKG and respiration are •
on continuous channels. Special instrumentation will consist of an
earth and sky JO-mm. camera loaded with color film. Pictures will be
taken at the rate of 10 per minute. A total of 660 frames are provided.
