Unit Overview
Sines of the Time
Curriculum-Framing Questions
What do trigonometric functions have to do with right triangles, and what is a
unit circle?

Unit Summary
Students will have a basic understanding of right triangle trigonometry and will be able to
evaluate the six trig functions using the "special right triangles" and the unit circle.

Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes

1) define the six trig functions using a right triangle

2) define unit circle

3) define the six trig functions using the unit circle.

4) recognize the 45-45-90 and the 30-60-90 triangles and the lengths of its sides

5) use reference angles to evaluate trig functions in all four quadrants

6) graph the trig functions solve simple trig equations

7) apply the trig functions to "real life" problems.

Targeted State Frameworks/Content Standards/Benchmarks
The student will use the definitions of the six trigonometric functions to find the sine,

cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant of an angle in standard position,

given a point other than the origin, on the terminal side of the angle. Circular

function definitions will be connected with trigonometric function definitions.

The student, given the value of one trigonometric function, will find the values of the

other trigonometric functions. Properties of the unit circle and definitions of circular

functions will be applied.

The student will find the values of the trigonometric functions of the special angles

and their related angles as found in the unit circle without the aid of a calculating

utility. This will include converting radians to degrees and vice versa.

The student will use a calculator to find the value of any trigonometric function and

inverse trigonometric function.

1) Lessons on the unit circle, the definitions of the six trig functions, radians and degrees, the
"special right triangles," reference angles and the chart.

2) Assign groups and have the students create sketches of the six trig functions by hand
using the chart and graph paper.

3) Assign the trig project. Students must create and PowerPoint, a newsletter, and a website.
Allow time to work in the computer lab. Six groups are needed (one for each trig function).
Each group is to do the assigned function in a PowerPoint, and page in the newsletter,
and a page on the website to be created.

4) Presentation day
Approximate Time Needed
Two weeks of class time in the computer lab workiing on the projects (5 classes of 90 minutes
each). Then one class meeting for the students to make their presentation.
Prerequisite Skills
1) Familiarity with a TI-83 graphing calculator

2) Knowledge of computers

3) A student in PreCalculus

The three prongs of the activity will each be weighted

Student Assessment equally among the PowerPoint, the newsletter/brochure and
