Parking in downtown Leesburg’s Town Hall garage is no longer free to the public after a 4-3
vote at the Feb. 23 Town Council meeting.
The service first began as a gift to downtown Leesburg’s visitors during the holiday season. It
was then decided to extend all levels of the parking garage to be free to the public but expired
Feb. 23.
“I’ve heard from a number of residents that this has been very successful. They don’t have to
worry about being charged. I’d like to continue it forever. The cost of parking is dedicated to
meters on the street,” Council Member David Butler said.
The previous rate schedule was permit parking in the underground levels, and charged per-hour
on other levels with the first hour free. Drivers parked in the deck could also obtain stamps from
businesses in downtown Leesburg to validate parking for one hour.
“We have a town asset that can contribute to revenue,” said Mayor Kristen Umstattd.
“Extending the period in which we charge to nights and weekends would bring in significantly
more revenue for the town. I completely agree it is a pain to go through that gate, I think people
are willing to and expect to pay. We could be bringing in additional revenue.”
“We’re going to lose money,” Council Member Ken Reid said about keeping the parking free. Most Popular in News

Being relatively new to the area, this article (and previous articles on this topic)
confuse me. So effective Saturday, you’ll have to pay to park on upper levels of
the parking garage? And with very little parking (that I’ve seen) downtown, you
pretty much have to use the parking garage, so to shop downtown you have to Stay

pay to park. Ok, I get that concept. But then again, Leesburg does seem to be
more of a walking community.
