INTERNATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY INSTITUTE OF APPLIED SCIENCES LAUNCHES IN CINCINNATI 

CINCINNATI, OH ‐  MARCH 2, 2010 ‐‐ The National Sustainability Coalition, today announced 
that it is collaborating with Dr. Calvin L. Green,  Jr.,  a world‐renowned environmental engineer 
and scientist, to launch the International Sustainability Institute of Applied Sciences.  Dr. Green 
spent 25 years as a technology leader with The Procter & Gamble Company, where he worked 
in Corporate Global Environment before retiring last September. His extensive expertise in 
wastewater treatment and pretreatment technologies, hygiene engineering, dust control and 
business  science make him an excellent choice to serve as the Institute’s first president. 

    The National Sustainability Coalition (NSC), a nonprofit initiative on a mission to transform 
America’s businesses into sustainable enterprises, is sponsoring the start‐up of the International 
Sustainability Institute of Applied Sciences.  Dr. Green has recruited a number of professional 
colleagues to form a prestigious resource pool that will bring world‐class sustainability 
curriculum to community colleges and technical schools through Centers of Sustainability 
Excellence across the U.S. The turn‐key program includes  accredited and certificate 
sustainability courses,  expert workforce development training designed to integrate 
sustainability into work processes, and dynamic instructors with proven proficiency in 
sustainable best practices. 
     “There is nothing more important today than educating a 21st century workforce who 
recognize the significance of understanding and promoting sustainability,” says Icy L. Williams, 
chairperson of the NSC. “The Institute will create pathways for adult working students to achieve 
educational and career success, while allowing them to take quality courses that ordinarily are 
only available at a four‐year college or university.” 

     According to Dr. Green, the Institute works closely with community college administrators,  
faculty and staff to:  
 Provide a means by which students can build on their associate degree programs to 
advance their education…and their careers. 

 Offer  University  transition  education  for  students  considering  a  four‐year  degree  in 
sustainable development and environmental management. 

 Provide  job  training  and  industry  credentialed  programs  that  today’s  workers  need  to 
succeed in a changing workplace. 

 Apply  the  sciences  of  sustainability  to  the  labor  market  by  offering  education  that  is 
sensitive to real‐life experience and relevant to jobs that are in demand. 

     “In  times  like  these,  organizations  need  leaders  with  the  knowledge  and  training  to 
implement  effective  green  initiatives  that  will  improve  business  operations,  manufacturing 
processes and green construction projects, while enhancing the environment”  says  Dr. Green, 
who has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry from Tuskegee University and a 
Ph.D. in Civil/Environmental Engineer and Aquatic Ecology from North Carolina State University.
