Mr. Taylor would like to announce the formation of the Cecil Taylor Program of NYC, ine., a non-profit corpora ion chartered by the State of New York for the development of new arts. The first public presentation for the program called A Cecil Taylor Festival, took place January 18, 19, & 20 at Columbia University. The Festival featured the debut of the fifteen piece Unit Core Ensemble performing the compositions of Cecil Taylor, Mr. Taylor's poetry, dance, solo piano, Andrew Cyrille—Milford Graves Dialogue of Drums, and the Cecil Taylor Unit. It was the first of series planned by Cecil Taylor to benefit the Cecil Taylor Program in NYC. The idea of a Cecil Taylor Program in NYC is the outgrowth of the two other educational programs Mr. Taylor created at the University of Wisconsin and at Antioch College that spanned the last four and one-half years. We seek to create such an insti in NYC, Mr. Taylor's birthplace and the creative center for the art form called “jazz”. We need your support and awareness of this attempt to create something unique to the arts on this planet. How can you help? Buying this record helps. Unit Core Records is a “musicians” enterprise,” a company owned by the musicians themselves. Only in this way can the artist have complete artistic control and ownership to all rights of presentation of his art. This position of complete control and responsibility by the artist gives the ‘Opportunity to examine the nature of the recording industry. When he does he finds, as you probably already know, that only a small percentage of the total purchase price goes to pay those whose creative efforts are the life blood for an entire industry. And on closer examination we realize that no record industry revenue has ever been channeled to jon that would support and encourage the artistic development of those whose creative influence and participation expand an art form, hence an industry. INDENT (Mysteries) was released in August, 1973, the first production of Cecil Taylor's own label Unit Cor INDENT II is the next three movements or “layers” from the same concert recorded at Antioch College while Mr. Taylc ‘was Artistand-Composer-in-Residence. His first entire solo piano recording, INDENT, received the highest critical recognition. The first release of Mr. Taylor’s composition for large ensemble makes this an historic event. It is music of tremendous scope, epic in qualities expressing spontaneous energies and meditative pathos.
