Assignment 1 Bio 12

Natasha Fast
1. The distilled water is the control in the experiment
2. The independent variable would be the amount of sucrose put into the beaker.
3. The dependant variable is the way the potato will respond to the amount of sucrose put
into the beaker.
4. The amount of sucrose in the beaker could be a standardized variable.
5. Yes.

Hypothesis:
If the Elodea plant is subjected to extreme temperatures, then it will damage the cell thus
causing the chlorophyll to leak.

If the Elodea plant is put into salt water, then it will cause the plant to shrivel and die
because Elodea is a freshwater plant.

0.15 NaCl Cell looks to be healthy although some areas of it are darker
than other.
0.5 NaCl Cell looks like are areas are expanding and the green bits
seem to be shrinking and disappearing.
0.075 NaCl Cell has lost a lot of its chlorophyll and the remaining
bits of it have spread out, making the cell clearer.

Altering the temperature of elodea will make chlorophyll leak, epically when
temperatures are at extremes. I expected these results because Elodea is a freshwater
plant that rarely gets subjected to these kinds of temperatures.

3. The salt caused the Elodea plant to shrivel and die. This is to be expected because the
Elodea plant is a fresh water plant.

Conclusion

In conclusion to this experiment salt and extreme temperatures damage the Elodea plant.
Extremely cold and extremely high temperatures seem to make the plants chlorophyll
leak. 0.075 NaCl seems to make the cell shrink and the chlorophyll leak and disperse.
0.075 and 0.5 solutions of NaCl made the Elodea cell hypertonic whilst the 0.15 solutions
showed little change. The NaCl solution that is isotonic to the cytoplasm would be 0.5
with a change in mass on 25%.

Questions

1. At physiological, or body temperature, the cells function their best. As temperatures

increase, both the cell membrane and the proteins can be affected. High temperatures
cause proteins to break down. Increased temperatures also increase the reactions that
happen within the cells, which may be acceptable to a point, until the temperature
becomes too high which will destroy the protein, the reactions and the cells.

2. Low temperatures also affect the cells protein by breaking them down. Therefore the
rest of the cell will be affected and will not be able to carry out its functions.

3. Yes you can because standard curve applies to determining the concentration of a
substance, particularly in proteins and DNA.

4. Solution A most likely has a lower concentration of salt than in solution B. Salt will
make the cell begin to shrink but high amounts of it will make cells disappear and
disperse.
