On Tuesday, February 15th, Brookside Elementary School held its

January Awards Assembly. Each month teachers pick 2-3 students
from their classroom to receive a Very Important Person Award using
self-esteem boosters. This month 26 students were given prizes for
getting caught Being Responsible or Being Respectful. There are also
awards given to students for anything from being a good helper to being a
better speller. This month 16 students received these awards. Sam Robey
received the Patrol of the
Month Award. Dan

and David McInnis
received Student of the Month Awards. Rachel Morgan, Megan Wall and
Alexis Fitzpatrick received the Most Improved Award. Cafeteria Service Award

Bully Busters Leadership Day at BRMS

BRMS teachers selected students to participate in a Bully Busters leadership

day with Eagle Village. The 40 students involved played games for building
teamwork skills, shared in discussion groups, and learned different ways to
help when they see students in need. The day was a great success, and we
saw friendships build between students in different grades who wouldn't
have known each other without this conference. During poster creating
activities the students drew a metaphorical garden to represent our school
and their places in it. Their thinking and creativity were amazing. Special
thanks to our Eagle Village Team Leaders who helped us grow!

BIG RAPIDS – As part of the
Wheatlake Center Cancer
Awareness Series, Dr. Leonard
Wright will present an overview
of alternative therapies for cancer
patients at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Wright, director of Spectrum
Hospice in Grand Rapids, has more
than 20 years of experience in
administering complementary and
alternative treatments to cancer
patients. As part of the Cancer
Awareness Series, he will give a
scientific explanation of evidence
and methods as well as hands-on
information.
The presentation will be beneficial
for health care providers, patients
and the general public, said Tom
Hogenson, director of the Mecosta
County Medical Center, which
hosts the Wheatlake Center.
“Dr. Wright will bring a wealth of
experience to share with people,”
Hogenson said. “He has a lot
to say, should be a great public
speaker and we’re looking forward
to having him.”
The Cancer Awareness Series
features around six speakers a
year, selected by a committee from
the Wheatlake Center.
Hogenson said he expects up to
100 people to attend the lecture,
which will be held in the auditorium
at the Holiday Inn and Conference
Center, located at 1005 Perry
Avenue, Big Rapids. The event
is free and pre-registration is not
required, though attendees can call
(231) 592-1034 in advance so the
committee will have an idea of how
many to plan for.

CHIPPEWA HILLS RECEIVES
$48,084 IN INCENTIVES FROM
CONSUMERS ENERGY
REMUS – Consumers Energy
handed out $11.3 million in
incentives in 2010. Chippewa Hills
School District got a $48,084 piece
of that for a lighting upgrade and
new boiler.
The Consumers Energy Business
Solutions program began an
incentive program in 2009 with the
goal of encouraging businesses to
make their facilities more energy-
efficient. In exchange for completing
upgrades and renovations,
Consumers Energy would award a
rebate.
Since the beginning of the program,
Consumers Energy has distributed
$17 million, helping 2,450
commercial and industrial Michigan
customers in 2010 alone.
Chippewa Hills School district
was the only business in Mecosta
County to receive a rebate, which
is obtained through an application
system recording the projects
and their cost. In addition to the
incentive money, the district will
now save 596,813 kilowatt hours
of energy and 327 thousand-cubic-
feet of natural gas annually.

* Keep your vehicle refreshed.
Change the engine oil. Use the
recommended grade of motor oil
for your vehicle, and change it
according to your vehicle owner’s
manual, which usually says every
three months or 3,000 miles.
Prolonged driving without an oil
change may cause severe engine
damage. Regularly check your
vehicle’s fluid levels, including
transmission, power steering,
windshield washer and coolant.
* Keep in constant contact.
Maintain your tires. Check inflation
pressure monthly, and make sure
your tires are properly balanced.
Don’t forget to rotate your tires
according to the maintenance
schedule and have the alignment
checked at least once a year.
* Be considerate. Use good driving
habits. Accelerating quickly and
stopping abruptly can prematurely
wear your vehicle’s engine,
transmission, tires and brakes.
Aggressive driving also wastes

* Protect it from the elements.
Keep the exterior washed and
waxed to preserve the paint finish
and protect your vehicle from the
environment. Salt, water, sand
and even de-icing chemicals on
the road can cause rust or other

Cats and dogs can become
infected with heartworm from
mosquito bites. All cats and dogs
are susceptible to heartworm, no
matter their age or state of health.
It is important to protect your pet

heartworm disease has been found
in every state.
When an infected mosquito bites a
pet, it transmits heartworm larvae,
which mature into long adult
heartworms that can live in the heart
and surrounding vessels for several
years. The number of heartworms
living within the heart can be
astounding; up to 250 heartworms
have been found in a single dog.
Pets treated for heartworm don’t
develop immunity and can be
reinfected at any time by another
mosquito bite, so prevention after
treatment is essential.
While many pets don’t display
symptoms in the early stages, a
dog with heartworm disease can
show signs including: coughing,
fainting, weight loss or difficulty
breathing. If left undetected and
untreated, heartworm disease can
cause sudden death by blocking
blood flow to the heart. In dogs,
heartworm treatment involves
slowly killing the worms without
harming the pet. Cats tend to have
fewer worms, but their effect can
be just as devastating. Currently,
no heartworm treatment exists for
cats.
Luckily, heartworm disease is
completely and easily preventable.
Administering an oral monthly
heartworm preventative, or having
your veterinarian give an injection
every six months, will kill immature
heartworms before they mature
and are able to inflict damage to
the pet.

GREEN OCCUPATIONS ARE GROWING
(NewsUSA) - A combination of
legislation and activism is inspiring
companies to consider the “green”
side to their business.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics
shows environmentally related
occupations are projected to grow
38 percent more than all other
occupations combined by 2016.
The report, “Current and Potential
Green Jobs in the U.S. Economy,”
predicts the highest growth of
green jobs will be in renewable
power generation, retrofitting
residential and commercial areas
and in renewable transportation
fuels. As a result, universities are
increasingly integrating economic,
environmental and social issues
into their curriculum.
One of these institutions, DeVry
University, has created several
green-focused specializations to
build on the school’s core degree
programs -- including business
administration with a specialization
in sustainability management, and
electronics engineering technology
with a specialization in renewable
energy.
“Education needs to reflect this
trend for the future leaders who will
build economic and technological
capital while considering the impact
