On Feb. 28, Leesburg resident Barbara Bayles Roberts gave Loudoun County Circuit Court Clerk
Gary Clemens more than 2,400 signatures of people who want to see a referendum on the ballot
for Leesburg Town Council elections to be moved.
The referendum would ask residents if they would like to change voting from May of even years
to November of even years. The big debate is that residents show little interest in voting in May,
with less voting traffic compared to November voting.
The next step of the process is for Clemens to get a court order to place it on the ballot November
2011 for town residents to vote on.
“I kept hearing from people ‘why are we voting in May, why aren’t we doing this in
November?’” Roberts said. “I did the research and saw how low the voter turnout was in May.
We need to get more voter turnout, and we need to find a way to save money and make it more
accessible.”
Roberts says that with having town elections on a separate day from other elections, it’s costing
the town more money. Last May’s elections cost the town about $34,000. That was with a very
low voter turnout. Roberts says if town elections are merged with federal elections in November,
the town will incur less cost since elections are happening anyway.
