Desejo/se apenas

(Wish/if only)
Introdução
"wish"

POdemos usar "wish":

"I wish to attend the meeting."
"I wish him the best of luck."

"wish" / "if only"

o "I wish I lived in the countryside."
o "If only I lived in the countryside."
I don’t live in the countryside in the present so this desire is impossible.

o "I wish I hadn't eaten the prawns."
o "If only I hadn't eaten the prawns."
I regret that I ate the prawns in the past.

presente:
o "I wish he would save money."
o "I wish he could save money."
o "If only he would save money."
o "If only he could save money."
not "I wish he will/can save money."
I do not believe that he can/will save money, so this is an impossible desire about his ability in
the present to save money.

Sujeito + "wish" + "to" + infinitivo

positivo I wish to attend the meeting.

You
We
They
He / She / It wishes
I
You
negativ don't wish
We
o They
He / She / It doesn't wish

I
you
pergunt Do wis

 Para expressar um desejo:
Sujeito + "wish" + pronome objeto

He / She / It wishes you
us the best of luck.

o They
He / She / It doesn't wish

you you
pergunt Do wis
we us the best of luck?
a they h
them
Does he / she / it him / her / it

o "She wished him the best of luck."
O modo subjuntivo

Expressões que usam "wish" e "if only" asão exemplos do modo subjuntivo, que é usado para expressar
desejos improváveis ou impossíveis (ou recomendações, sem "wish" / "if only"). No modo subjuntivo, só usamos
"were" (e não "was"):

 com o passado simples de "be":

o "I wish he were on holiday."
o "If only he were on holiday."
o (e não "was here")
He is not on holiday so this is an impossible desire in the present.

 com o passado contínuo:

o "I wish I were going on holiday."
o "If only I were going on holiday."
o (not "was going")

Segunda estrutura condicional link to worksheet) para desejos impossíveis no presente:

 "If only I didn't have a headache, I would/could go to the party tonight."

 "I wish I didn't have a headache, then I would/could go to the party tonight."

Terceira estrutura condicional link to worksheet):

 "If only I'd taken the train, I would have arrived at the destination by now."
 "I wish I'd taken the train; I would have arrived at the destination by now."

resultado imaginado no passado.

Cláusula condicional

 Segunda estrutura condicional (worksheet link):

"if only"

"If only" + Sujeito + passado simples +
Sujeito + "would" / "could"
vírgula
If only I didn't have a headache, I would / could go to the party tonight.

Cláusula principal Cláusula condicional

Sujeito + "would" / "could" "if only" + Sujeito + passado simples
I would / could go to the party
if only I didn't have a headache.
tonight

"wish"

Sujeito + "wish" + sujeito + passado simples +
"then" + sujeito + "would" / "could"
vírgula
then I would/could go to the party
I wish I didn't have a headache
tonight.

 Terceira estrutura condicional (worksheet link):

"if only"

"If only" + sujeito + passado Perfeito +
sujeito + "would have" / "could have"
vírgula
If only I had taken the train, I would have / could have arrived by now.

Cláusula principal Cláusula condicional

Sujeito + "would" / "could" "if only" + Sujeito + passado simples
I would have / could have arrived by
if only I had taken the train.
now

"wish"

Sujeito + "wish" + sujeito + Passado Perfeito + ponto e sujeito + "would have" / "could
vírgula have"
I would have / could have arrived by
I wish I had taken the train;
now.
