Ques - 3G mobile phone services have now entered India. In 3G, data
management and handling has a significant role unlike the earlier 2G in which
voice and text was the most significant kind of traffic around.

Design a research problem to identify potential takers and spreaders of 3G-like

data services given all the profile, calling and billing details of all of your
company’s existing mobile phone customers.

2G –Phones
Introduction-: 2G stands for the second generation in wireless telephone
communication, which was commercially launched in 1991. Although mobile phones
have been in use since the 1980s, the technology behind 2G made cell phones smaller,
more reliable, and more affordable.
Second generation cell phones were more energy-efficient and could run on smaller
batteries, which meant the phones themselves could be made smaller than before. For
the first time, cell phones were truly portable. Because signals over 2G networks were
encrypted digitally, cell phone signals became much more difficult (though not
impossible) for hackers to intercept. But one of the greatest benefits of 2G technology
was that small amounts of data could be transmitted along with voice information.
This made text messaging and caller ID possible.
There are more than a few downsides to 2G networks. In spite of its shortcomings,
1G’s analog signals degrade more gracefully than 2G’s digital signals. While a failing
1G signal might pick up static or slowly fade, 2G digital signals become choppy or
fail altogether, resulting in dropped calls. Also, the data transfer capabilities of 2G
networks are very slow, unable to exceed more than 20kbps.
FEATURES - :

• high data transfer rate

• increased frequency band and
• wireless connectivity

Technology -:

FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access)

TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and
CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)
All types have one common feature of multiple access which means that many users
are able to use the same number of cells. First part of all the technologies makes
difference.

3G changed all that when it was finally implemented in Japan in 2001. The transfer
rate of signals over a 3G network can achieve speeds between 128 and 144kbps. This
is several times the transfer speed of 2G signals, which are below 20kbps. Of course,
the speed of 3G signals varies depending on whether the caller is stationary, walking,
or in a moving vehicle.
3G-compatible cell phones are capable of receiving streaming video and audio. They
may also have features such as multimedia messaging and the ability to hook up to
IPTV (Internet TV). Since the signals are aided by satellite and have a much wider
range, global roaming is another 3G feature. This means users will still have cellular
service even if they travel overseas.
The quality and reliability of calls were greatly improved with third generation
technology. Data is sent over these networks in three layers: One layer contains the
actual voice information, another layer is responsible for sustaining signal quality, and
the third layer retains information about the connection in order to prevent dropped
calls.

3G FEATURES -:

• high data transfer rate,

• maximum width of the frequency band,
• WiFi facility, and
• first-rate roaming
• Able to use verbal and textual service concurrently
• High data transfer rate approximately 200 kbps
• CDMA 2000 provides wireless facility

Nokia 3G-Phones -:

Nokia 6700 and 7230 are slider phones while E52 has a candy bar form factor.

Nokia 6700 slider phone weighs as little as 110 gms. It comes in six beautiful colors,
purple, lime, petrol blue, and aluminum grey. It integrates 5.0 mega pixels camera and
internal memory of 2000 MB.

3G slider Nokia 7230 is colorful and of excellent quality phone. It is light weighed
phone and weighs 100 gms. The phone is available in graphite and hot pink color. It
has 3.2 megapixels of camera with 4x digital zoom. It has attractive frame with vivid
2.4” color screen. User can easily access to face book, flicker and OVI

Nokia E52 smartphone from E series is a worthy successor to the Nokia E51 model.
Slim and sleek E52 has 2.4-inch QVGA display with up to 16 million color support.
This phone has 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and also has built-in A-GPS as well
as Nokia Maps support. Nokia E52 has social networking apps integrated and
supports Windows Live, Yahoo!, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

E52 supports Mail for Exchange, IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, Nokia Messaging,
POP/IMAP and select third party solutions. E52 has up to 60MB internal memory
which is expandable with up to 16GB microSD card.

All three phones are 3G-enabled and fall in mid-range price bracket.

Problem in 3G-phones -:

3G is expected to enhance broadband penetration, however constraints

related to spectrum, access device and content must be addressed for
sustainable growth.

Adequate bandwidth for rich media mobile broadband services

Globally, mobile operators have a 2 x 10 MHz to 2 x 15 MHz spectrum to
enable service providers to promote data services aggressively. In India,
though the government has taken a positive step towards 3G, the 5 MHz
of spectrum may not be able to support data intensive services like video,
especially given the spectrum crunch in the 2G bands. As per the analyst
reports, based on 3GPP simulation, optimum data capacity of each 3G cell
site for 5MHz bandwidth is only 7.2 Mbps capable of serving 250 data users
per site with speed of 256 Kbps (assuming contention ratio of 1:10).

Availability of utility and diverse vernacular content

Content and applications for broadband are still not widely available in India.
For mobile broadband adoption to grow, content and applications that make
broadband Internet an everyday utility in the life of a user must be made
available at affordable prices.
Business users seem to be the immediate beneficiaries of mobile broadband;
stakes for rural India are even higher given the unparalleled benefits that
broadband enabled applications such as telemedicine, m-commerce,
m-education and m-governance can unleash. For this to happen, the
availability of content that caters to the needs of the rural population is
critical. The local language content would be a key enabler for the uptake of
mobile broadband amongst the rural masses.

Affordable 3G enabled handset a key driver

Availability of affordable 3G enabled handsets would be a key driver for
adoption of mobile broadband services in India. Although few handset
manufacturers have already announced the launch of sub Rs 5,000 devices,
however price levels for 3G handsets are not expected to reach the level of
2G handset prices in the absence of substantial volumes.
