If you are a first time buyer,
you may be overwhelmed
with all the information
given on the web regarding
the safety regulations of mo-
torcycle helmets. Buying an
expensive helmet that meets
high safety standards doesn't
automatically offer the best
protection in case of a crash.
Knowing the specs and
choosing a helmet that best
fits you will. This article is
meant to give you factual in-
formation so that you can
make an informed decision
before you make a purchase.
A motorcycle helmet is an
extremely important acces-
sory for motorcyclist. When
purchasing a motorcycle hel-
met, two things to consider
for safety are the DOT (De-
partment of Transportation)
rating and the SNELL certifi-
cation. One comes from the
manufacturer, DOT rating.
The other comes at cost to
the manufacturer, SNELL
certification. There two or-
ganizations monitor and test
motorcycle helmets for
safety in
the U.S.

DOT is a federal agency.
DOT RATED MOTORCY-
CLE HELMETS:
The DOT tests motorcycle
helmets each year to ensure
compliance with Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Stan-
dard (FMVSS). FMVSS re-
quire helmets to absorb a
certain amount of impact en-
ergy, stay fastened in an ac-
cident and prevent
penetration of objects. The
rating is based on how many
G Force (the force of gravity
upon a given object in mo-
tion) a simulated head placed
inside the helmet will receive
upon impact, when dropped
from a height of ten feet.
Less than 400-G Force is the
determining factor for the
freely used "DOT" marking.
I say freely used because the
DOT relies on the manufac-
turers to test the helmets and
provide a copy of test results.
If the tests meet the federal
motor-safety standards the
helmet will have a sticker
with DOT printed on it.
However, in efforts to keep
people safe and manufactur-
ers honest,
the Depart-
ment of
Transporta-
tion, itself,
will conduct
random
testing of
helmets and
put products
through the
drop test, at
which time

a pass or fail evaluation will
be given by the DOT. In ad-
dition, make sure your hel-
met has an inner lining
measuring about an inch
thick. DOT approved hel-
mets usually weigh about
three pounds. My suggestion
to prospective buyers is to
check NHTSA for the pass
and fail listings that DOT
posts for tested helmets prior
to purchase.
SNELL CERTIFIED MO-
TORCYCLE HELMETS:
A SNELL certification has
much more stringent goal to
reach. This rating is obtained
through request and cost of
the manufacturer. The
SNELL Memorial Founda-
tion, a non-profit organiza-
tion formed in 1957 in
memory of William Snell
who died of head injuries
sustained while wearing an
ineffective helmet, performs
intense testing upon request
from the manufacturer.
Members of the foundation
perform the tests on the ac-
tual helmets. The foundation
membership is comprised of
scientists, physicians and
participants in the sport of
racing. The foundation's goal
is to develop and keep cur-
rent the standards for effec-
tiveness of safety helmets
through research, education
and testing. The results are a
certification based on the
highest and most current
standards for safety and ef-
fectiveness of motorcycle
helmets and, most likely, a
more expensive helmet, as
the overall cost to the manu-
facturer will be greater.
In summary, wearing an ef-
fective motorcycle helmet re-
duces your risk of dying in
an accident by 37 percent.
Buy a helmet that has a des-
ignation of DOT rated or
SNELL certified, and buy the
helmet with the highest rat-
ing that you can afford.

of a traffic jam or on a de-
serted highway, it might be
days before someone stops
to help you. If you are a
biker, you expect better of

That’s why we wave to one
another on the road. That’s
why we stop to admire an-
other man’s bike with re-
spect, not with petty envy.
It’s the blue collar worker in
us, no matter our line of
work. When a biker hears
that another person is in
need, their natural impulse
should be to go help. That’s
why so many of our Sun-

When I went look for bikes
in a month filled with snow
and sub-zero temperatures, I
ran into the Amigos Moto-
Club, based in Juarez. While
I was shooting the Amigo’s
bikes, I was told that they
were pressed for time, not
something I’m used to hear-
ing when I’m trying to
show-off someone’s bike.
They were actually in a
hurry to help a friend’s kid. I
offered to come along.
Alexa Cruz is the pretty lit-
tle
girl
in
pink. A year ago, Alexa was
diagnosed with medulloblas-
toma, basically a malignant
brain tumor. After much
time with the usual battery
of treatments, including
gamma-knife surgery to re-
move the tumor, she was
free and clear. Unfortu-
nately, only two months
later, the cancer came back
with a vengeance, producing
the 4 tumors now present.
The benefit was a series of
bands and a cookout at Bull-
dogs Pub off of Joe Battle to
raise money for the next bat-
tery of treatments that will
take up to 6 months over in
San Antonio. Alexa’s father,
“Rocky” Cruz, says it has
put a scare on the family, but
it has also pulled her ex-
tended family together.
“I have to ask Alexa repeat-
edly if she’s in pain, if she’s
feeling alright because she
simply will not show it. She
is so strong. I have to stay
strong for her, but I know
she has a lot of fight left in
her. My strength is her
strength, and vice versa.”

El Paso Mayor John Cook, a
man of many talents, has one
more interest which he shares
with thousands upon thou-
sands of other enthusiasts –
namely, thundering away on
his huge motorcycle to con-
duct toy runs during Christ-
mas, or to just enjoy the fresh
air as it whistles through his
hair.
“Well,” Cook jokes, “I could
say that I love motorcycle rid-
ing because of the wind flow-
ing through my hair, but, since
I have no hair, I guess you
could say that I just love the
freedom that I feel being atop
my motorcycle. I’ve been rid-
ing since the 1970s, and it all
started when I was stationed in
Binh Son Vietnam with the
U.S. Army. I was at a remote
refugee camp, and motorcy-
cles were an ideal form of
transportation. I’ve been rid-
ing since then, and it’s still a
pleasure.”

have evolved to become a
popular pastime, as well as a
show of power to bike riders.
Although there were earlier
versions of motorcycles, it
wasn’t until the 1860s that a
velocipede, also known as a
Michaulin, made its debut. It
was powered by steam. From
there, dozens of inventors and
innovators tinkered with the
machine making it go through
various changes until it arrived
at today’s version.
Cook, who rides what enthusi-
asts call a hog, is often seen
tooling around town on his
bike, al-
beit, he is
no leather-
wearer.
Instead,
his usual
attire is a
suit, with
coat and
tie and, of
course, a
helmet. Although on his 5th
annual toy run as a member of
El Paso’s Motorcycle Coali-

children during Christmas, he
was photographed with only
his shirt and tie.
“Those of us who ride, know
of the many accidents that
have been suffered by old and
young alike,” Cook said.
“That’s why safety is so im-
portant. The closest I came to
an accident was when a ce-
ment truck was tail-gating me
at about 50 mph. I was forced
to pull to the side of the road
to get away from that one.
Every rider must be aware of
the surroundings. Look to see
what’s behind you, what’s to
the sides of you, what’s in
front of you. Always use cau-
tion, especially if you’re a new
rider.
“I go back to the El Paso
Community College, which
offers a course in safe driving
to keep abreast of what’s new,
what’s changing. You are
taught how to lean into your
turns, how to properly use a
helmet. Just follow the rules,
be aware of where you are,
and you’ll be okay. Wear
bright-colored clothing. I often
go to Fort Bliss to talk to the
soldiers about bike safety.

careful.”

a day for even the most hard-
core of bikers. But, true to El
Paso, less than 10 days after
the worst of the cold, the tem-
perature began creep into the
60s and it was safe to start
thinking about what the year
would bring. On a day that hit
the low 70s, I hit the road
looking for bikers that were
fed up with winter and we
talked about where they
planned to go this year behind
the handlebars of their fa-
vorite ride.
“I’d like to go to Austin’s Re-

be my first time to take that
long ride. I don’t know, but
I’d like to at least do that

Having a passion for
something is a good way to
keep you balanced, happy
and relieve any stress or anx-
iety you may have. It is safe
to say, it would be hard to
keep that passion at bay.
When you have been work-
ing on muscle cars and hot
rods most your life, you will
tend to bring what you know
to new endeavors. In this
case, Frank Sanchez’s pas-
sion for automobiles has led
him to fulfill another one of
his childhood dreams.
This is his 2006 Harley
Davidson Heritage Soft-tail
Custom. There is more to
than what meets the eye with
this black beauty. From the
custom airbrush work to
those killer 100-spoke
wheels, this motorcycle was
made to be a one of a kind
dream machine for Sanchez.
When asked, “What was the
inspiration for the paint job?”
He replied, “I wanted some-
thing different from the
flame and skull paint jobs…
motorcycles and girls go to-
gether.” Who would disagree
with that?
It is hard to think of what
else Sanchez could do to his
motorcycle, it’s already taste-
fully modified. His only
modification he would like to
do is install an air suspension
system. You couldn’t argue
with that, knowing Sanchez
has already racked up more
than a handful of trophies at
bike shows here and in the
surrounding areas.
For Sanchez, his vision was
to own a motorcycle. It be-
came a reality when he
ended up selling his beloved
show car, a 1968 Chevrolet
Impala convertible. This may
be hard to swallow for some,
but when a passion grows, it
grows like wild fire. Now, a
five year rider, what Sanchez
likes most about riding a mo-
torcycle is the freedom you
feel when you’re out riding.
To him, he stated, “It’s a

good stress reliever.” With
times being tough, who does-
n’t need some down time?
Sanchez’s passion for motor-
cycles has given him new
means to express himself and
offered him new mechanical
knowledge when it comes to
working on his motorcycle.
He is the core form of many
motorcyclists out there, who
love and enjoy riding, as well
as working on their two-
wheeled machines. Sanchez
will continue to ride for
years to come or as he says
it, “Time to take the girls for
a ride!”
