Kingdom Psalms of Imprecation

The imprecatory Psalms are prophetic prayers prayed through David by Christ through the Holy Spirit. Christ is praying against his enemies and those who pierced him. These were the enemies of the KINGDOM who experienced judgment. It is important to understand these Psalms in reference to the arrival of the KINGDOM in the FIRST CENTURY, and the terrible judgments that came upon the enemies of Christ. The opposition to Christ's path to the throne was typified by the opposition of Saul to David's path to the throne. The sufferings of David were a type of the suffering of Christ. David prayed against his enemies and Christ prayed through David against HIS ENEMIES. IMPRECATORY PSALMS are those psalms that contain curses or prayers for the punishment of the psalmist's enemies. To imprecate means to invoke evil upon, or curse. Psalms 7, 35, 55, 58, 59, 69, 79, 109, 137 and 139 all contain prayers for God's judgment on the psalmist's enemies.

Psalm 69:19-28 Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee. Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. They gave me also GALL for my MEAT; and in my thirst they gave me VINEGAR to drink. Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

Let their EYES be DARKENED, that they SEE NOT; and make their loins continually to shake. Pour out thine INDIGNATION upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them. Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents. For they PERSECUTE him whom thou hast SMITTEN; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded. Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.

Let them be BLOTTED OUT of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

They gave him gall to drink.

Matthew 27:34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with GALL: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. Paul quotes from Psalm 69 in reference to the partial blindness and judgment that was coming on Israel. Rom.11:9-10 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a recompence unto them: Let their EYES be DARKENED, that they may NOT SEE, and bow down their back alway. Those who rejected the Kingdom were blotted out of the book of life. They were excluded from the kingdom and cast into outer darkness. Their house was left desolate, and God's indignation came upon them.

Clarke's Commentary on the Bible And David saith, Let their table, etc. - And from their present disposition it is reasonable to conclude that the same evils will fall upon them as fell upon the disobedient in former times, as predicted by David, Psalm 69:22, Psalm 69:23, that their very blessings should become curses to them, and their temporal mercies be their only recompense; and yet even these earthly blessings, by not being enjoyed in the Lord, should be a stumbling block over which they should

fall, and, instead of being a blessing, should be the means of their punishment. They would have a worldly Messiah, and therefore they rejected him whose kingdom was not of this world.
