Local teen receives volunteer award

Thursday, Mar. 3 by Laura Pe te rs | 0 com m e nts | Em ail this story

Jennie Xie sat down, timid and shy, not really wanting to be recognized for doing so much for
her community. The 16- year-old was acknowledged at Teen Volunteer of the Y ear in Loudoun
County at the Chocolate Galore event in Lansdowne Feb. 18.

When she arrived at the event, she didn’t understand what the award ceremony was all about
and why exactly she was there.

“I did not expect it at all. They told me to go for the award, but I didn’t know what it was. I
underdressed,” Xie said.
Although she doesn’t tend to boast of her own accomplishments, the people around her couldn’t
stop talking about how much she has done for others.

“She’s very caring. She loves little kids. She has served in our summer youth program as a
chaperone, and took care of the kids,” said Steve Rogers, youth minister at Grace Christian
Church in Herndon. “She’s very hardworking. I can ask her to do anything, and she volunteers
to help in anything,” he said.

Xie spends her time volunteering at the Y MCA and Cool Spring Elementary. She teaches Sunday
school at her church, teaches an art class called Clay Creations at Ida Lee Park, and sponsors a
6-year-old boy through the nonprofit organization Compassion International.

In the Y MCA programs, Xie does it all – from wiping noses, helping with homework, or
entertaining the children with games. She doesn’t complain about anything she does.

“I think it’s particularly how she was raised,” Fears said. “She’s very service-driven and she loves Stay
to interact with children.” Connected

Fears describes her as part of the reason why the Y MCA is successful. The Y MCA was built by
volunteers and thrives because of them.
“It helps all of us,” Fear said of the benefits of volunteering. “Nonprofits were built upon the
strength of volunteers. Having more volunteers makes us stronger.” Follow Us
