Rectangular Waveguide

Introduction:

This example shows how to simulate a rectangular waveguide using Ansoft’s HFSS™ (High Frequency Simulation
Software). The desired mode of propagation is TE10. The dimensions of the guide are shown in the figure.

b=1.016 The dimensions are given in cm.

a=2.286

Procedure:

Design Settings

1. Go to Modeler pull down menu and select Units.

2. Select cm and click OK.

3D Model

1. With three mouse clicks, the rectangular box can be created. The position of the box is specified by
clicking the mouse pointer at the origin position. The base of the box is defined by dragging the mouse
pointer in x-y plane and clicking at a point. The height of the box is specified by moving the mouse pointer
vertically and clicking at a point.

2. Click box icon on the tool bar to create a box.

3. Click at the origin (first mouse click).

4. Click somewhere in x-y plane (second click).

5. Move the mouse pointer vertically and click somewhere (third click).

6. Enter the dimensions of the waveguide in the dialog box which appears after the completion of the box.
Position :0, 0, 0
XSize : 2.286
YSize :1.016
ZSize :8

7. Fit all contents in the view by pressing ctrl+d.

Boundaries and excitations

1. To apply boundaries, the rotate and pan tools come in handy.

2. To select the side walls, go to Edit pull down menu and click on Select >
Faces. This option enables us to select the faces individually.
3. By holding the ctrl key, click on the visible sidewalls. Using the rotate tool, rotate the waveguide in order to
select the remaining two side walls.
4. Right click on the screen to get the menu, which is shown below. Apply Perfect E boundary condition to
all the selected sidewalls. (see the following image)

5. The waveports are assigned to the remaining faces as shown below.

6. In order to see the fields on a 2D plane, a 2D surface at the y=1.016/2 is drawn.

Position : 0, 1.016/2,0
Axis :Y
XSize : 2.286
ZSize :8

Analysis Setup:

1. Click HFSS pull down menu and select Analysis Setup > Add Solution Setup. (see the image below)
2. Enter 10GHz in the Solution frequency field and click OK.

Solve

1. Click on the Analyze all icon in the toolbar.

Post Processing

1. Select the 2D surface which is inside the guide.

2. Right click and select Plot Fields > E > Mag_E. A dialog box appears. Click on Done.

The following picture shows the E field variation along the plane.
Tasks

1. Plot the vector H field on the internal 2D surface. The following picture shows the H field in a guide
wavelength.

2. Plot the current density on the top wall. The following picture shows the current density in a guide
wavelength.

3. Observe the evanescent mode by setting the Solution frequency to 6GHz and solving.
