SaveTheWaves®
Above & Beyond Compliance

Protecting the oceans and the rich marine

life they support is a way of life and a way of
doing business at Royal Caribbean Cruises
Ltd. This commitment, and the recognition
that continual environmental improvement
is essential, is the foundation of the SaveThe
Waves® program, and is followed by both Royal
Caribbean International and Celebrity
Cruises.
Environmental issues were considered in the
design of our first ships and guided our
operations onboard. In 1992, the program
was formalized and given the name SaveThe
Waves®

The four key principles of SaveTheWaves®are:

- Go Above and Beyond Compliance - Do

more than is required by regulations.

- Practice Pollution Prevention - Nothing

may be thrown overboard.

- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - Reduce the

generation of waste material, reuse and
recycle as much as possible, and ensure
proper disposal of remaining wastes.

- Continual Improvement - Change is the

only constant and innovation is encouraged.

1
WASTE REDUCTION
One of the most beneficial principles of a
sound waste management program is to
reduce the amount of waste material being
created.
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity
Cruises have taken significant measures in
recent years to reduce the volume of ship-
generated waste.
Agreements are in place with suppliers to
control the volume of material delivered to
ships that must be processed as waste.
Additionally, all disposable plastic items
typically available to our guests, such as
plastic shampoo bottles, plastic plates and
flatware, and lightweight plastic cups, have
been eliminated.
Plastics do not easily degrade in the
environment; indeed, plastics can take many
decades before they no longer pose a threat to
marine life.

2
SPECIAL WASTES
There are a number of waste products
generated onboard that must be handled in a
special way. They are handled with special
care to ensure that people and the
environment are not harmed by these waste
products.
The following are examples of Special Wastes:
Aerosol cans
Dry-cleaning waste
Medical waste, including needles (sharps)
Oily waste
Photographic solutions
Used paints and thinners
Used butane lighters
Used batteries
Under no circumstances is it permissible to
dispose of these wastes in trash containers or
in the ship’s gray water (sinks and drains) or
black water (toilet) systems. Each of these
special wastes has its own appropriate
handling and control process ranging from
incineration to transfer to approved shoreside
waste disposal facilities.
Whenever there is a question about the
disposal of any waste product, shipboard
employees are instructed to contact a
supervisor or the Environmental Officer, who
will assist in determining the proper means of
disposal.

3
AGGRESSIVE RECYCLING
PROGRAM
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity
Cruises have agreements in major ports with
companies that will take our separated waste
for recycling.
The most visible recycling effort involves
aluminum cans. Our ships can recycle over 25
million cans a year.
Cooking oil, crushed glass, paper, toner
cartridges from printers, and scrap metal are
also recycled whenever possible.
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity
Cruises use recycled materials extensively in
an effort to extend the use of our natural
resources.

4
PROPER DISPOSAL
OF REMAINING WASTE
Our fleetwide operations include policies,
procedures, equipment, and training that
ensure no solid wastes are discharged
overboard.
Compactors for cans, glass-bottle crushers,
large and efficient incinerators and pulpers for
food waste are examples of the multi-million-
dollar investments Royal Caribbean
International and Celebrity Cruises have
made to handle the waste products from every
source onboard our ships.
Our investment in SaveTheWaves® has given us the
capability to safely store solid waste until it
can be taken to suitable disposal sites on land.
Our disposal of liquid wastes is done in a
manner that exceeds internationally
recognized standards.

ENVIRONMENTAL
TRAINING FOR EVERY
CREW MEMBER
All new and returning shipboard employees
receive orientation and instruction concerning
their responsibilities in the SaveTheWaves®
program shortly after joining a Royal
Caribbean International or Celebrity Cruises
ship. The company policy, expectations and
how SaveTheWaves® affects each employee is
explained in detail by the Environmental
Officer.

5
INDIVIDUAL PLEDGE
TO PROTECT
THE ENVIRONMENT
At the conclusion of the first SaveTheWaves®
training, each shipboard employee must sign a
pledge to uphold his/her responsibilities to
protect the environment. This personal
commitment ensures that each and every
shipboard employee fully understands the
importance of this program and will do their
utmost to incorporate the SaveTheWaves® program
in every aspect of their onboard life.
Additionally, all shipboard employees are
encouraged to take time to explain the concept
and importance of the SaveTheWaves® program to
our guests.

Whatever their specific job responsibilities,

the employees of Royal Caribbean
International or Celebrity Cruises understand
the importance of protecting the environment
and know that the policies and procedures of
the SaveTheWaves® program must be strictly
adhered to at all times.

6
ENVIRONMENTAL
OFFICER
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity
Cruises know it is not enough to have the best
waste-management equipment and the
highest standards of environmental protection
to make the program effective. It takes
dedicated, highly motivated experts to oversee
and advise all shipboard employees about
their roles in protecting the environment.
Therefore, all Royal Caribbean International
and Celebrity Cruises ships have an
Environmental Officer onboard at all times.
The Environmental Officer is a Senior, three-
stripe officer and has the responsibility of
overseeing all aspects of the ship’s
environmental operations. These officers
receive specialized training in Environmental
Management to prepare them for their duties.
Their responsibilities include overseeing and
verifying all environmental systems,
equipment, procedures and training onboard in
a process devoted to continual improvement.

SAFETY, SECURITY &
ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT
The Safety, Security & Environment
Department ensures that our SaveTheWaves®
program continues to be enhanced and fully
implemented onboard our ships and at the
corporate headquarters.
The Safety, Security & Environment
Department defines environmental policies
and develops and verifies the procedures
necessary to ensure compliance with our
environmental policies. This department
assists the ships in their continual
improvement efforts and provides technical
assistance to ensure that the latest technology
is considered in the design and operation of
new ships.
Proposed new environmental laws and
regulations are assessed well in advance to
ensure full legal compliance.
Any shipboard employee who has a specific
environmental concern onboard a vessel will
raise this concern with shipboard
management. If a concern is not resolved, the
employee may call the Environmental Hotline.
Calls are monitored by the Safety, Security &
Environment Department and are always
treated in a confidential manner.
Our guests are also encouraged to use this
Hotline if they should have any concerns
about environmental operations.

ENHANCED MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM COMPLIANCE
& AUDIT PROGRAM
Just as the Environmental Officers have
oversight responsibility onboard, a verification
program is in place to ensure full adherence to
our environmental policies. This program
begins with the Captain and officers holding
frequent inspections and reporting the results.
Each ship conducts a weekly Captain’s
Environmental meeting bringing together all
department heads to review the ship’s
environmental programs and performance.
The verification program also includes audits
by environmental experts from the Safety,
Security & Environment Department. Finally,
environmental audits are conducted by
independent certification agencies to verify
compliance with all applicable national and
international environmental standards.

SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT
CERTIFICATIONS & AWARDS
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity
Cruises follow a comprehensive Safety and
Quality Management program (SQM). The
SQM program was designed as a modern
management tool to ensure consistent,
fleetwide compliance with company policies
and procedures as well as the numerous rules
and regulations that cover our operations.
SQM mandates regular management reviews
of operations and includes a self-verification of
our environmental policies.
The International Organization for
Standardization has developed management
standards to define an organization’s
approach to providing quality service (ISO
9001) and to help organizations manage their
environmental affairs (ISO 14001).
The company has certified critical segments of
our operations against both the ISO 9001 and
ISO 14001 standards. This accomplishment is
unprecedented in the cruise industry and
represents yet another example of our
commitment to go Above and Beyond
Compliance. These standards challenge us to
set objectives and targets to reduce significant
environmental impacts and echo the
company’s desire for continual improvement.
Both shoreside operations and shipboard
systems and personnel are continuously
audited against these voluntary standards.

SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT
CERTIFICATIONS & AWARDS, cont’d
Senior management utilizes the Operational
Review Board, which regularly reviews
environmental performance and defines areas
where environmental improvements can be
made, to target resources so that the
improvements can achieve the maximum
benefit. All aspects of our environmental
practices and policies are scrutinized by the
Environmental Committee of the Board of
Directors, chaired by William K. Reilly, former
Administrator of the Environmental
Protection Agency.
Certification to internationally recognized
quality and environmental management
standards sends a clear message of
commitment to our guests, employees and
shareholders worldwide. The management
systems of Royal Caribbean International and
Celebrity Cruises also comply with the
International Safety Management Code (ISM
Code), which became mandatory in July 1998.

11
IMPROVED POLLUTION
CONTROL TECHNOLOGY
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity
Cruises have been active partners in the
development of pollution-control equipment as
the fleets expand with major shipbuilding
projects. This large investment provides
incentive for manufacturers to invest in the
research and development of improved waste-
management processes. Royal Caribbean
International and Celebrity Cruises also
provide feedback to these companies on current
technologies and communicate our expectations
for future advances in waste management.

IMPROVED CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT

Both fleets are actively seeking to reduce the
number and the harmfulness of chemicals
used onboard ships. A continuous dialogue is
maintained with suppliers to ensure only the
most environmentally friendly chemicals are
used. Shipboard employees are also trained to
use chemicals correctly and safely. The
implementation of a fleetwide Chemical
Management Program has further enhanced
these initiatives.

THE
ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISES LTD.
Ocean Fund
A pristine ocean environment is a cornerstone
of a great cruise experience. Therefore, the
continued health of marine ecosystems cannot
be taken for granted. Royal Caribbean Cruises
Ltd. has established the Ocean Fund to
support non-profit, marine conservation
organizations. These groups work to maintain
and restore marine environments, to seek
ways to minimize human impacts, and to
educate the public.
Since 1996, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has
awarded over $6 million in Ocean Fund
grants to 48 organizations, large and small.
The Ocean Fund adds to Royal Caribbean
International’s and Celebrity Cruises’
commitment to environmental protection by
supporting projects that complement the
shipboard programs already in place.

13
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. values the
environment and is committed to
protecting and preserving environmental
resources, preventing pollution, and
continually improving environmental
management. Implementation of this
policy is a primary management
objective and the responsibility of every

sea environmental regulations and
requirements, including those of the Flag
Administration, Port States and
