Write a story about a young man/woman whose life changed completely after a lucky
day.
Read the text below and do ALL the exercises that follow:
Ask someone whether they enjoy reading murder mysteries and their response usually
is quite decisive: people either love them or hate them. Those who do not like them
often make the mistake of assuming that all crime fiction is similar. In reality, each
writer’s work is special because they have a different background and their own unique
style of writing. The novels written by the famous Agatha Christie and by James Ellroy
could hardly be more different.
Agatha Christie was born in England in 1890 and had written more than eighty books
and plays before she died in 1976. She was the best-selling author of all time,
excluding Shakespeare, and her novels have been translated into more than forty-five
languages.
Many ideas in Christie’s books were inspired by details from her own life and personal
experience. Some of her stories are set in a fictional location that is based on her
home town, Torquay. Even the methods of murder in her novels were influenced by
1
her training as a chemist. She knew exactly which substances could be used to poison
the victims.
Christie was known for her complicated but brilliant plots. She left clues for the reader
about the identity of the killer, but included so many clever twists that it is almost
impossible to solve the mysteries before the answers are finally revealed. She enjoyed
keeping her readers in suspense until the very last page.
James Ellroy was born in Los Angeles in 1948 and so far has written more than ten
novels. His most famous work is LA Confidential, a thrilling story which was made into
a hit film.
Ellroy’s interest in crime writing began in childhood with the unsolved mystery of his
mother’s murder. He also spent a great deal of time studying the fascinating history of
the LA Police Department. Many of his stories are set in the 1950s in Los Angeles.
They describe the kind of violence, crime and corruption that police departments have
to deal with in big cities.
Although his plots have many layers, Ellroy’s stories are not confusing for the reader
because he writes with short sentences and simple punctuation. He always pays
attention to detail and employs two researchers to make sure that any historical
information he uses is correct. Recently, he has become tired of writing crime fiction
and is planning to write his next book on political history.
