I. > > > > Overview
===============================================================================

A) Introduction
VTMB offers the ability to play as one of seven different vampire
clans. Each vampire clan offers a very unique experience including
special quests, dialogs and reactions. This mod was originally
intended to enhance the experience of playing as a Ventrue. Powerful
Ventrue cultivate armies of servants who do their fighting for them.
To enable a more authentic Ventrue experience, the mod added the ability
to dominate NPCs, turning them into servants who would travel with
and protect the PC. Alternatively, the PC could possess their servants
and fight enemies from afar.
During beta testing, requests began to pour in from the VTMB community.
The Companion Mod development team responded. Today, Companion Mod
includes the ability for all clans to create parties, willing
companions, new conversation and the ability to embrace.
B) Patched Mod
Companion Mod is built upon the 5.6 Unofficial Patch and Includes the
latest binary updates from the 6.0 Unofficial Patch. It has been tested
with the Retail, Steam and Digital Distributions of the game on both
Windows XP and Vista (32). It should also work under Vista 64, but we
did not have any testers with that operating system to confirm.
C) Companion Options

The following characters are available as companions in this version

of CompMod. Be sure to check the website for the latest version as
new versions may include additional options and conversations.

II. > > > > Installation
===============================================================================
1) [Optional] Backup your current VTMB installation
Save games were expanded to include party information. Therefore old
save games will not be compatible with the Companion Mod. Nor will
your new save games be compatible with the original game.
It is possible to have two versions of the game installed on one computer.
You can play either version so long as there is at least one legitimate
copy of the game installed.
This allows you to play VTMB with or without the Companion Mod. However,
backing up the original installation requires that you have enough
hard disk space for two copies of the game (Generally 10 Gig minimum
is recommended).
Rename the "Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines" portion of the
original installation directory to "VTBM - Original":
Default Windows XP\Vista 32 bit installation directory:
C:\Program Files\Activision\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Default Vista 64 bit installation directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Default Steam installation directory:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\vampire the masquerade - blood
lines
2) Uninstall any existing copy of VTMB
** follow these instructions even if you renamed the directory in the
step 1
Retail:
- Insert the CD and select "Uninstall".
- When prompted, delete all local content.
Steam:
- Open Steam, goto the "My Games" tab. Right click on VTMB and select
"Delete local content". The game will move to the "Not installed" area
.
3) Clean up Previous Mod Artifacts
VTMB's uninstaller only removes files that were installed by VTMB. If
you have installed other mods or patches, those files are not cleaned
up and may present issues.
Using Explorer, browse to the directory where VTMB was installed:
Default Windows XP\Vista 32 bit installation directory:
C:\Program Files\Activision\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Default Vista 64 bit installation directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Default Steam installation directory:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\vampire the masquerade - blood
lines
If a directory exists named "Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines", right
click it and delete it completely from the computer.
** Do not delete the directory "VTMB - Original" if you backed it up in
optional step 1.
4) Install a fresh Copy of VTMB:
Retail:
- Insert CD 1 and select "Install". Follow the instructions.
Digitial Distribution:
- Execute the installer that you downloaded.
Steam:
- Start Steam.
- Click on "My Games".
- Right click the VTMB game within the Steam window and select
"Install Game".
** If you run into problems re-installing: "Your Steam Ticket has expire
d"
delete the file "ClientRegistry.blob" from C:\Program Files\Steam.
This will force steam to update when it next starts which should fix
the problem.

DO NOT INSTALL ANY PATCHES OR MODS BEFORE OR AFTER INSTALLING THIS MOD!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

5) Start\Exit VTMB:
This step is mostly for Steam versions of the game. Sometimes Steam does
not fully extract the contents of your game until you actually launch the
game. To be certain steam does not clobber any of the mods changes, you
should launch a newly installed Steam version of the game at least once
before extracting the mod.
- From Within Steam, right click VTMB and select "Launch Game".
- Once you reach the Load\Save menu, you can quit.
6) STEAM ONLY
Disable Automatic Updates for VTMB:
- From Within Steam, right click VTMB and select "Properties".
- From Click on the "Updates" tab
- In the combo box, select "Do not automatically update this game"
7) Unzip compmod_1.0.zip using winzip
** The 7z file was compressed using winzip as most file share sites
only support zip files.
8) Download and install 7-Zip if you do not already have it:
http://www.7-zip.org/
9) Extract compmod_1.0.7z file to:
Windows XP\Vista 32 bit:
C:\Program Files\Activision\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Steam:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\vampire the masquerade - bloodli
nes
Vista 64 bit:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines
** Make sure that "Current Pathnames" is checked.
** Make sure "Overwrite without prompt" is checked.

NOTES : If you have VISTA and UAC enabled, extract 7z file to to desktop
temp directory and copy files manually. See Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHlc4LFeUFI
If you have Vista64 and you experience problems with this mod, you
may have to run "INSTALL64" under the "tools" directory. However, do
not run this unless you actually experience problems.
All skins distributed or identified by the compmod website are safe
for use with this mod. If you install skins from other sites, make
sure that the skin does not clobber or alter clandoc000.txt or it
will break this mod.

===============================================================================
III. > > > > Companion System
===============================================================================
You can collect up to 7 companions at any given time and you can order up to
2 of them to travel with you. Those companions who are not traveling with you
can be placed in an assortment of animated poses around your haven as
"decor".
A) Gaining Companions
---------------------
There are three ways to gain companions in this game.

Friendly Non-Player-Characters (NPCs)

A limited number of humans and vampires will join forces with you
willingly if you ask.
Later in the game, you will be given the opportunity to embrace one
human. Embrace options are limited to those humans who willingly
joined forces with you. For more details see the "Spoilers" section
of the website.
Social Disciplines
If you play with a clan that has a social discipline and you invest in
that discipline, you will be able to enchant, dominate or bend the will
of many humans into being your servant. The level required depends
on the quality of the human. Bums and prostitutes only require level 1.
Normal humans require level 2. Ghouls and other enhanced humans require
level 3.
Social disciplines include domination, dementation and presence.
Domination: Available to Tremere and Ventrue.
Dementation: Available to Malkavian.
Presence: Available to Brujah, Toreador and Ventrue.
In CompMod, presence is considered weaker than domination or dementation
and therefore requires an additional level to accomplish the same feat.
For example, to make a bum your servant requires presence level 2, but
only requires domination or dementation level 1. For more details see th
e
spoilers section of the website.
Social disciplines can not be used to permanently enchant vampires,
however under some circumstances they can be used to persuade vampires.
Animus Constupro
Towards the end of the Alistair Grout quest given to you by LaCroix, you
will discover the Animus Constupro. The Animus Constupro (AC for short)
is a parasitic creature that has the power to enslave anyone, even the
most powerful vampires. However, the creature has been trained so that
it only releases its enslaving venom when someone feeds from it directly
.
Therefore, you must actually convince others through dialog to drink the
creatures blood in order to enslave them.
If you are playing with a clan that has social disciplines, you can try
to use mind-control on vampires to persuade them drink the blood, but mo
st
vampires will shrug off the attempt. It will only work if you catch them
off guard or by doing it to someone who already trusts you.
There are other ways to get vampires to drink the blood. Trickery,
persuasion and timing are tools of the trade. For example, while a vampi
re
may not trust you, often times vampires have ghouls or allies that they
do
trust. If you learn the identity of these people and then possess their
allies, you can trick the vampire into drinking the creatures blood unde
r
false pretenses.
The Animus Constupro offers party building opportunities to all clans.
Once you use the Animus Constupro to gain a vampire companion with socia
l
disciplines, you can then possess that companion and use their powers to
gain human companions that you previously did not have access to. It als
o
allows easier enslavement of humans once it is in your possession, lower
ing
the required discipline level by 1 point through new dialog options. (Ve
ry
handy for clans that rely on "Presence").
NOTES
Once you turn a vampire or human into a companion, they may never be the
same again. Any future quests that they might have given you may no
longer be available. Keep this in mind when deciding whether to pursue
someone as a party member.
B) Combat
---------
Companions will not initiate a fight unless you attack first. They will
not blow your cover when playing stealth. If you attack an enemy (or you
are discovered), companions will back you up and attack anyone who is
hostile towards you.
You can tell most companions through dialog how you want them to fight.
The options are:
- General : Ranged, Switch to Melee if enemy gets too close.
- Melee Only : Do not use ranged weapons.
- Hide : Disappear until fight is over. Don't fight.
Companions use a different system than the PC for health. They can take
a certain number of hits based on their endurance and your level. After
they absorb their max hits, they fall to the ground unconscious for 2 min
or until combat is over (whichever comes first). When they get up, their
hits reset. These hit counters reset between fights, map transitions or
when a fallen companion gets back up.
Your level is based on your attributes, skills and disciplines. Following
the tutorial, most people will start the game at level 2. If you max out
all of your attributes, skills and disciplines, you would be considered
level 20. However, without cheating, the maximum level you can achieve in
this game is level 14. (Companions will remain weak in combat if you stock
pile your experience to use during possession).
As a rule of thumb, most companions can take a number of hits equivalent
to your level. (Give or take up to 20 percent based on their unique
stamina).
C) Weapons
----------
As of CompMod 1.x, you can not assign specific weapons to your companions.
You can only assign them to ranged or melee combat. This will change in
version 2.0

D) Possession
-------------
Starting Possession
You begin possession by choosing the "<Possess>" option from your
traveling companions dialog.
Animal companions can not be possessed for various technical reasons.
This may be changed in the future.
Possession Details
When you possess a companion you gain their body, stats and powers.
You are not responsible for what a possessed companion does. If you
kill a human or break the masquerade while possessing a companion,
the humanity loss or violation is incurred by the companion. When you
un-possess, it will be as though you did nothing wrong. If you have
extra experience points and you spend them on the companion, they will
be given back to you when you un-possess.
While possessing someone, you can try to start a dialog. Most the time
the game will treat you as if you are the same gender and clan as
the possessed NPC. In some cases the game will auto-un-possess, and in
some rare cases you will get new custom dialog because the NPC you are
talking to recognizes you. (See the spoilers section of the website for
more details.)
Ending Possession
There are three ways possession can end:
1) You talk to the protagonists body and end possession manually.
This one is pretty self explanatory.
2) The possessed companions health drops to 0 for more than 3 seconds.
When the body of a possessed NPC takes too much damage, possession
automatically ends. In most cases, the NPC's body falls and you are
teleported back to the PC's body (where ever you have stashed it).
During boss fights, you will not teleport. You will simply become
the PC again and continue fighting from your current location. This
is because boss fights generally lock the doors behind you and I
didn't want players teleporting outside of the area with no ability
to get back in.
3) You begin a dialog with someone that possessed NPC is not allowed
to talk to.
Explanation: If you possess the owner of a bar and talk to the
bartender, you would expect the bartender to recognize you.
However, if you talked to the prostitute outside, it wouldn't
really matter who you are. The Compmod uses pre-defined reaction
tables to decides who is allowed to talk to who. If it detects a
conflict between the person you are possessing and the person you
are talking to, it will auto-end possession. It happens most often
when talking to main characters such as LaCroix or Nines who always
talk to you as though you are the protagonist.
Malkavians are an exception to this rule. Possessed Malkavians will
rarely if ever auto-un-possess when beginning dialog. If you want
to get philosophical, then just pretend they make everyone see the
protagonist. But in reality I wanted to provide access to their
dementation discipline during dialog for those clans without
mind-control abilities.

E) NPC Outfits Packs

--------------------
NPC stands for "Non-Player Character". NPC outfits are designed for your
companions. Each character in the game has a directory that contains
models and skins for the character. The Companion Mod scans the
characters directory for models and allows you tell people to
change outfits if additional models are detected. It is really that
simple.
If additional models are found, you will see "Change outfit" options in
your dialog with the companion. Mod supports the concept of installable
outfit packs which can be added at a later time and will not break save
games.
It is important to note that NPC outfit packs SUPPLIMENT existing
companion outfits. That is, the new outfit and the original outfit
will both be available.
See: http://sites.google.com/site/vtmbcompmodhome/outfit-packs-1

F) PC Outfits Packs
--------------------
PC stands for "Player Character", the character that you play the game
as. PC outfit packs are different than NPC outfit packs in that they
do not suppliment but rather replace existing PC outfits.
If you install a PC outfit pack, you will no longer be able to play
using the original clan models and outfits. However, you can
restore the original clan models using the PC RestorePack available
on the website.
This allows users to play around with various models without fear
of having to reinstall their game from scratch to reset the clan
models back to their original state.
See: http://sites.google.com/site/vtmbcompmodhome/outfit-packs-1

G) Animated Poses
--------------------
One of the things you can do with companions is place them around your
haven as decor. This functionality is only available on companions who
are not traveling with you.
Starting the Pose System
The pose system is initiated using dialog. The exact wording changes
from NPC to NPC, but it generally includes the word "Pose". After it
is initialized, a message will appear on the screen telling you to
use KP_0 (Keypad 0) for help or KP_Enter (Keypad Enter) to end the
pose system.
Moving the Companions
When the pose system starts, the companion becomes attached to you.
When you move, they move with you like an object that you have picked
up. You can also make fine grain adjustments to their position using
the keypad. The default movement keys are as follows:
KP_LEFTARROW : Rotate companion to the right.
KP_RIGHTARROW : Rotate companion to the left.
KP_UPARROW : Raise companion into the air. (typically to place
on an object such as a bed or chair).
KP_DOWNARROW : Lower companion.
KP_PGUP : Lean companion backward so that they are facing up
towards the ceiling.
KP_PGDN : Lean companion forward so that they are facing down
towards the floor.
KP_5 : Recenter companion directly in front you. Usefull if
the companion accidently falls off the map.
LEFTARROW : Move companion to the left of your crosshair.
RIGHTARROW : Move companion to the right of your crosshair.
DOWNARROW : Pull companion closer to the PC.
UPARROW : Push companion farther away from the PC.

Changing Poses
KP_PLUS : Next pose.
KP_MINUS : Previous pose.
Changing Expressions
KP_SLASH : Next facial expression.
KP_* : Previous facial expression.
Ending the Pose System
KP_ENTER : Finished\End pose system.
ENTER : Finished\End pose system.
NOTE:
Hitting KP_0 pops up a help message which explains the default key
mappings.

H) Known Issues
--------------------
There are some minor bugs (more like irritations) that are known. Below
is a list with tips on how to fix or avoid them.
- When using the Pose System, if the companion you are posing comes into
contact with the PC, the PC may be thrown off map. Only pose from first
person perspective.
- When using the Pose System, if you "Lose" the NPC, hit recenter (KP_5 by
default). If you lose someone and cant find them, or place them in a
location where you can't talk to them, approach any haven comapnion and
tell them "Round everyone up and tell them to return to their starting
positions". This dialog option is basically a haven reset.
- Do not use "get behind me" to possess your way through doors and
fences. You will likely break the game as you will be doing things
out of sequence.
- If you hit anyone, your traveling companions will attack them.
This includes the other traveling companion and members of your party.
If you accidentally hit a companion and the other companion begins to
attack them: Squat on the ground. Within 15 seconds both companions will
go invisible and stop fighting. Talk to either one and tell them to
"Find the other servant and bring them here". This will stop the fight.
If you accidentally hit a party member in your haven. Leave the haven
and return or talk to any non-traveling companions and tell them to
"Round everyone up and tell them to return to their starting positions".
- Some companions stand with their arms stretched out and head looking at
the ground. This is an engine bug that I can't fix. Generally, if you
RESTART the game (ie exit to desktop and reload) the behavior often
goes away.
- Embracing a human creates an animation that involves the human falling.
Be certain you are not near a cliff or elevator or even tightly wedged
into the corner of a room when you embrace your human.
- There is a model issue wihh Yukie's boots. The textures will not map
properly so they normally appear black, even when obfuscated. There is
no fix for this other than telling Yukie to change outfits to a different
model. (As of the 1.3 release, there are no such outfits).
I) Reporting Bugs
--------------------
Before submitting a bug, be certain you have the latest version of the
Companion Mod.
When you submit a bug, provide clear instructions on how to reproduce it
and do not forget to include:
- Version of Companion Mod.
- Graphics card.
- Amount of RAM (There are known issues with VTMB on machines with
more than 3.5 GB of ram).
- Be certain you are not out of disk space on the drive that
contains VTMB. (You should have at least 2 gigs of free
space).
- Version of VTMB (Steam, Digital Distribution or Retail).
- OS : Windows XP or Vista.
- Permissions : Are you running as an admin or standard user?
Bug Severity:
REALLY BAD : Crashes the game (back to desktop) in a predictable fashion
.
BAD : Bug prevents me from being able to finish game period.
Normal : Bug causes a problem, but I can get around it by
reloading a previous saved game.
MILD : Unexpected behavior, but not necessarily broke. i.e. I
see an NPC who is in my party and I talk to them using
their own body.
Do not send reports for bugs that you can not reproduce.

===============================================================================
IV. > > > > Music Manager
===============================================================================
A) Controlling Background Volume
--------------------------------
1. Rename Sound Scheme Directory:
[VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/sound/schemes
to
[VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/sound/schemes_bg

And then rename Directory:

[VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/sound/schemes_no_bg
to
[VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/sound/schemes
2. Edit [VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/cfg/mods.cfg
- Find the line that says:
mod_music_manager_enabled = 0
and change to
mod_music_manager_enabled = 1
3. Edit [VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/cfg/mods.cfg
- Find the line that says:
mod_music_vol = 35
And set the volume. 100 would be equivalent to the games original
volume. 50 would be equivalent to half volume. The default value
is 35% of the original volume
B) Using Custom Audio
---------------------
1. If you haven't already done so, follow the directions for A above.
2. Place 128 kbps, 44 kHz MP3s into:
[VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/sound/custom
3. Place 128 kbps, 44 kHz Mp3s into:
[VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/sound/custom/combat
4. Edit [VTMB-INSTALL-DIR]/Vampire/cfg/mods.cfg
- Find the line that says:
mod_music_use_custom = 0
and change to
mod_music_use_custom = 1
5. [Optional]
Queue songs up using WinAmp and save list.m3u to custom
and or combat diretories. This allows you to specify the order
that the songs will play.
6. [Optional]
Read the other mod_music_ variables in mods.cfg for
additional options.
C) Known Issues:
----------------
If a song ends and a new song begins during a conversation or
choreographed scene, the audio (dialog) may get cut short.
D) Usage Notes
--------------
Music Manager supports wav files. In fact, they are more stable than
MP3 files and recommended for users that experience any problems.
Mod supports all MP3 bitrates, however timing information is calculated
based on the assumption that MP3s are encoded at 128 Kbs constant
bitrate. If you use a different encoding, the song may be cut short or
there may be long pauses between songs.
MP3s containing ID3v2 information will be ignored. You can easily remove
the information using WinAmp or converting the MP3 to a wav file.
By default, MP3s over 16 MB in size are ignored. You can change this
size by editing the mod_music_mp3_size_cap varaible within mods.cfg to a
different value.
For people willing to take risks, you can enable mod_music_autofix_MP3.
This option will create a "fixed" version of the currently playing MP3s
if it contains ID3v2 tags (and thus play it instead of ignoring it).
However, 2 temporary files are created during the fixing process that
are approx as large as the files being fixes. If the HardDrive runs
out of diskspace, it could result in system crash.
For this reason, autofix is NOT RECOMMENDED and usage of the feature is
at your own risk.
===============================================================================
V. > > > > Frequently Asked Questions/Common Problems
===============================================================================
Q: I can't feed
A: See graphics issues below. NOTE : If you are possessing a human, no
you can't feed.
Q: I have a graphics issue (screen goes black at startup, feeding failure)
A: The two most common solutions to all graphics issues:
1) Force DirectX 7 graphics by adding -dxlevel 70 to the shortcut. it
should look something like:
"C:\Program Files\Activision\...\vampire.exe" -dxlevel 70
2) Dont run SLI. If you have an SLI rig, use vender software to disable
for VTMB.
3) If you have more than 4 Gig of Ram:
This mod is already patched with the large ram fix. However even
it does not work on system with LOTS of ram (like 12 Gigs...) If the
game looks blurry and you have lots of RAM: The easiest fix is to
disable your extra memory:
Start > Run > msconfig > Boot > Advanced Options > Maximum Memory
Set to 2Gb (3 Gb max), restart computer, play bloodlines. When you
are finished, if you want all your memory back, run the utility
again and change your max memory back.
Q: How do I activate anti-aliasing
A: VTMB does not offer the ability in game, but most graphics card vendors
offer vendor specific software (NVidia Control Panel, etc...) to force
AA on any game.
Q: The game crashes when I talk to someone
A: Normally happens when you listen to the games sound files using Windows
Media player. WMP adds ID tag info to any MP3 you open with it. The ID
Tag info causes the game to crash when it tries to play the MP3. Use
WinAmp to open MP3 files to ensure you don't corrupt them. You can
re-install the game if you are unsure what file is causing the crash.
Q: Really wierd things happen when I try to possess people.
A: Normally happens when you install a skin that edits clandoc000.txt. To
fix, extract the compmod archive to a temporary directory and copy
Vampire/vdata/system/clandoc000.txt into the corresponding game
directory (clobbering the game's version of file).

VII. > > > > Outfit Pack Creation
===============================================================================
A) NPC Outfit Packs
-------------------
Use VPKTool to open up the mdl file and update the search paths to point at
a directory with your own custom vmt files that point to your own custom
texture files all within your own unique directory.
See the VTMB Mod Developers Guide for more details on editing MDL files
using VPKTool and changing skin and texture paths.
http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dhgs89mq_12hbmgkpd9

Conventions:
1) MDL files should use the convention:
<author>_<modelName>.mdl
Example:
dheu_vv3.mdl
2) MDL files for a particular NPC must be placed in the NPC's original
model directory.
Example:
models/character/npc/unique/downtown/vv/dheu_vv3.mdl
3) Texture Paths should be updated to point to a subdirectory of the
NPC's original materials diretory that uses the convention:
.<author>_<modelName>
Example:
materials/models/character/npc/unqiue/downtown/vv/.dheu_vv3/
4) Make sure all vmt files within your texture directory properly
point to corresponding tth/ttz files. (IE: if it is a new
texture, then make sure it point to the current directory).
5) Try to limit including textures. If you re-use a common texture (like
eyes), then try to declare a vmt file that points to the common
texture instead of bloating your pack with unneeded texture copies.
6) Naming conventions WITHIN YOUR MATERIALS DIRECTORY are at your own
discretion. You may also make sub-directories within your materials
directory.
7) Use 7zip or WinZip for compression or wrap your 7zip file within
a Winzip file if you need a ".zip" extension to upload your file
to a file share. Package must include a readme with installation
instructions.
Include directory paths. Make sure the archive can be extracted to
the VTMB install directory directly.
The root of the archive should have folders that looks like:
Vampire/models/...
Vampire/materials/...

Notes:
- Make the texture directory first, then update the mdl.
- Yes, the directory starts with a period.
- At a minimum, include all vmt files from the NPC's normal materials
directory. EVen if you dont use all the textures, the vmt files
will ensure everything maps to common resources.
More Notes:
- Windows explorer does not allow you to create directories that
start with a period. You must use command line (Start -> Run -> cmd).
to create the directory.
C:\>cd "c:\Program Files\Activision\Vampire - Bloodlines\Vampire..."
C:\Program Files\Activision\...>mkdir .mydirectory
Once the directory is created, you can continue using explorer.
B. PC Outfit Packs
------------------
There is really nothing special about PC outfit packs other than common
sense in the packaging.
Like NPC Outfit packs, users must be able to extract the outfit pack to
the VTMB install directory without any further modification.
Other requirements:
1) You MAY NOT alter clansdoc000.txt
2) You must use 7Zip, Winzip or a combination of the 2.
3) You must include a readme that tells people to unpack the file
to the VTMB install directory.

In reality, PC Outfit packs will work without compmod, however I will

only list packs on my website that adhere to the rules above.
