Living the Lectionary

Eighth Sunday after

Epiphany

Season: Epiphany
Week of February 27

“Called to Contentment”

About the Season: We are in the season of

“Epiphany”. Epiphany is a season that shows us the
part of Christ’s life when He and His teaching
becomes known to many people. It is a time of
displaying and manifesting Christ in our personal and
public lives.

About this Sunday: We are often known for the

things that we rely upon. We are content when we
have what we need, and often our contentment
shows – if for no other reason, because we are not
complaining about not being content. When
Christians are content, it causes people to notice
what keeps them content.

Reflecting on the Readings:

• Isaiah 49:8-16 – Content in Suffering – Isaiah
powerfully prophesies that God has “inscribed
you on the palms of my hands” looking to the
future Messiah. Have you looked upon Jesus’
suffering in the midst of your suffering?
• Psalm 131 – Content Like A Baby – The
Psalmist compares his soul to the
contentedness of a baby. What other images
of contentedness describe your relationship
with God?
• I Corinthians 4:1-5 – Content before the 2nd
Coming – Paul is content not to judge before
Christ comes again. What are you content not
to do before Christ comes?
• Matthew 6:24-34 – Content Not to Worry –
Jesus tells us not to worry, because our worry
shows that we are not fully trusting in God.
What are you worrying about and can you give
that worry item to God?
Law and Gospel:
• Law: Are you not content? Are you always
hoping that you had just one more thing, or
has another thing gone wrong in your
relationships? Certainly, you’re always going
to be able to find something in this world that
you might want – many of those things are
even good things to want. In the midst of
wanting, how are you showing your
contentment with Jesus?
• Gospel: You don’t have everything, but you
have the best that this world has to offer. You
have a relationship with Jesus Christ that gives
you the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
Eternal life is long enough for you to
experience every good thing that you won’t
experience in this life, and then you’ll have
eternity left over to experience good things
you’ve never imagined.
Living the Lectionary Ideas:
• Learn: We are finishing the Sermon on the
Mount, read the rest of this sermon from
Matthew’s Gospel.
• Do: Make a list of the things that you have,
and evaluate “if” or “why” you need those
things. Give away something you do not need.
• Live: Consumerism is the attitude of the day.
Live this week fighting that attitude with
contentment.
