Transfiguration Sunday

Season: Epiphany
Week of March 6th

“Transformed by the Gospel”

About the Season: We are in the season of

“Epiphany”. Epiphany is a season that shows us the
part of Christ’s life when He and His teaching
becomes known to many people. It is a time of
displaying and manifesting Christ in our personal and
public lives.

About this Sunday: Transfiguration Sunday is one

of the “high feasts” celebrated by liturgical Christians
throughout the world. Transfiguration Sunday is
always the Sunday before the beginning on Lent on
Ash Wednesday. Our celebration follows Christ’s
own journey, going from a focus on His manifestation
(appearing, teaching, being known) to His passion
(suffering, death, and resurrection).
Reflecting on the Readings:
• Exodus 24:12-18 – Transformed in Glory –
Moses goes up into the cloud of God’s glory to
receive His commandments. In what ways are
God’s commandments a part of His glory?
• Psalm 2 – Transformed by the King – David’s
Psalm foreshadows a king who will come and
be called the Son of God and the King. In what
ways is Jesus your king?
• 2 Peter 1:16-21 – Transformed by the
Message – Peter explains that the message of
Scripture is powered by God’s Holy Spirit
Himself. In what ways are you transformed by
the Word of God?
• Matthew 17:1-9 – Transformed Before Them –
Jesus shows His glory to 3 of the disciples in a
special way. How do you see God’s glory?
Law and Gospel:
• Law: We are often lulled into a sense of
security that prevents us from seeing God as
He truly is: holy, unapproachable by sinners,
and terrifyingly just. When we see God’s glory,
we are struck with the gut reaction of fear – not
because God doesn’t love us, but because of
what might happen if He didn’t.
• Gospel: Jesus comes to the disciples and says
“Get up and do not be afraid.” While it is
perfectly natural and even correct for us to
cower in fear, our Lord came to our world,
spoke with us, died for us, and touched us. He
wipes away our fears, not only of death and
hell, but of Himself.
Living the Lectionary Ideas:
• Learn: The Transfiguration is one of the “high
feasts” of the Christian world. Research what
other “high feasts” there are and how they are
celebrated.
• Do: Come to Ash Wednesday service this
Wednesday and experience the beginning of
Christ’s road to the cross and empty tomb.
• Live: Seeing the reality behind situations. Dig
deeper and try to see the truth that lies behind
the surface, and think of the truth that lay
behind Jesus’ “surface” of human flesh.
