SOMALI BRAVANESE WELFARE ASSOCIATION IN BARNET
Annual Report and Accounts for the Year ended 31st D ecember 2007
Our mission
Our mission is to address the needs and improve the quality of life of Somali Bravanese people
living in London and elsewhere.
Who we are?
The Somali Bravanese Welfare Association in Barnet (SBWA) is a registered Charity, the
registration No. is 1 056856. The association was set up in 1992 principally to support the needs of
the Bravanese Community most of whom were refugees escaping war and persecution in Somalia.
A large number of them are not educated in this country; hence have language difficulties, cultural
differences as well as suffering from the scars of their extremely traumatic experiences.
The organisation has acted as a 'home' for many where, through the activities and support services
that it provides. They are slowly regaining a bit of their life back, which they previously lost.
In recognition of the growing work of the organisation a larger premises has been secured from the
local authority to meet and support needs of the Somali Bravanese community. This has in-itself
produced an added challenge to develop and meet growing needs as well as to maximise the
potential of the new facility.
We provide information, advice and guidance on a wide range of issues, as well as support services
aimed at meeting community members' immigration, legal, and welfare, educational, economic,
socio-cultural and recreational needs.
Our Service provisions are very diverse and target children and young people, women, men and
entire families. We achieved many valuable contributions that we made in promoting the quality of
life for Somali Bravanese people.
1. The Charity's objects are to promote the welfare of all members of the Bravanese
Community where ever they may reside but particularly of those residing in London and
elsewhere by providing for their social, educational and recreational needs.
a) The most significant success we had over the past years is that we are expanding in line
with the needs of our community.
b) We organised peace week with local metropolitan police and local residents,
c) We organised a day trip to Lego land for more than 100 children and their families.
d) We brought up Somali Bravanese children together and form a football club that was
able to enter into a football tournament and compete with others.
e) Working with local counsellor we supported 125 families in relation with housing
issue
f) This year we supported 152 families and 104 single in relation with immigration and
nationality issues.
g) We held volunteering workshop in the centre which was based on designing a T-shirt, 20
young people have taken part in the project.
h) We worked in partnership with Twist to run different workshops, business training and
ESOL Skills for life at Bravanese centre to inspire our community getting the chance to
become entrepreneur and also help them with English speaking, listing and getting them
the jobs they deserve.
i) So far more than 60 people have been trained and 18 people are awarded with ESOL
skills for life level 1 certificate and 20 people with ESOL skills for life level 2 certificate.
Future Developments
Currently, there are no dedicated voluntary and community based projects in North London
which solely provide services aimed at addressing the needs of Bravanese people.
This gives us a unique opportunity for representing and lobbying on behalf of this community,
as well as establishing links and developing strong partnership work with mainstream
agencies, public and statutory agencies, as well as with other voluntary organisations.
Our current links in Barnet are with agencies such the Police, Primary Care Trusts, GP
Practices, Social Services, Local Authorities, Local Education Authority and colleges, Barnet
Voluntary Service Council, Barnet Refugee Forum.
