Australia – Going the Distance

Land down Under

Started at 5:00 am Saturday 4th December, Flight to Miami , followed by connecting flight MIA t to LAX –
chicken appetizer, no salad, warm bread – delish; followed by hot fudge ice cream Sunday, declined the
warm freshly baked? cookies . Left LA at 8:30 on V Australia. Nice meal (beef with mash potato and
veggies (corn and beans- I could eat this); roll with butter , did not eat the bread pudding, washed down
with a glass or red wine. Breakfast – I opted for the eggs and country fries (over the waffle and fruit),
yogurt, croissant roll with butter and jam and cheese and crackers.

Monday 6th December, Landed in Sydney late 6:25 missing connecting flight, put on the 9:15 flight to
Melbourne. Arrived Melbourne at 10:45. Caught taxi to hotel ($49.50). This place is not cheap. Hotel was
the Pensione Hotel on Spencer Street about ten feet from the intersection of Flinders Street. Trying to
avoid jet lag, took a shower and headed down Flinders Street, by this time I was starving, so by passed
the Chinese restaurant, the Nepalese restaurant, some healthy looking juice and subs place and headed
to a little place entitled Pepperoni – 24-7, I was going to have a slice of pepperoni or the delicious
lasagna, until I saw it – The Burger plus lots, that was the name “Burger+lots” – beef, bacon, cheese and
yes eggs. Delicious. Yes it was. But I was good, I ate half….. then three minutes later I ate the other half

Satisfied – yes, I was, I continued strolling down Flinders’ Street to Federation Square. Melbourne is an
extremely pedestrian and cyclist friendly city. I was planning on taking the kayaking downtown
Melbourne activity until I saw the river. It was brown, very brown. I believe if thou canst see the
bottom, wade not. Even though it was kayaking, there is still the likelihood of turning over in the river.
After strolling around Federation square, I took the Circle City Tram around the downtown Melbourne
area. The Circle City Tram is a free service. I got off near the harbor shopping complex, strolled around
and then hopped back on The Circle City Tram. The operator points out points of interest. Was getting
tired, so head back to the hotel, stopped at 7-11 to get a bite to eat before retiring. Got a Meat Pie
( ground beef in a potpie like pastry. It was okay – not bad. Also got a chicken , bacon club sandwich
($7). Headed to the hotel, paid for internet $15 for 24 hours, logged on checked email, downloaded a
book to read and then went to bed.

Tuesday – 7th December: Awoke at about 5:30, organized my bagged, ate the other half of the sandwich,
showered and waited. I checked out, and walked around the corner, about 20 feet for pick up by the
Groovy Grape company for my Great Ocean Road and Grampians tour. Soon walked up Steph (England),
another English bloke, and girls from Ottawa. The bus picked us up at 7:00 am, loaded our stuff in the
back and we were off. There a few more pickups in the city and then we headed out of Melbourne.
There were 16 of us , (3 english girls, 2 english guys, couple from Norway, Couple from Sweden, a girl
from Germany, 1girl from Holland, another couple from ?,1 from Ottawa, another girls from ?, and me.
Look out at Bell’s Island, Then the start (sign of Great Ocean Road), beach Lorne, cape Patton lookout
and We had a rainforest walk ( trees over four hundred years old). The day was rainy we had chips
(fries, potato cakes and dim sing at the Chicken joint in Lorne. Young in love Swedish couple dashed in to
the waves even though it was cold and raining. Did not get to see the twelve apostles at sunset due to
the weather. Dinner was mini pork chops, corn, salads, garlic bread with fruit cake and heavy cream for
dessert. Watched a little tv (deal or no deal – Australian version) and minute to win it. Read a bit, but
then headed in at around 9:30.

Wednesday 8th December – woke up at 3:30, went in living area to read, then at 6:00 went for a stroll
outside, there was a nature walk path. At 7: took shower and then had breakfast (available cereal,
toast, tea, coffee.) Headed out first thing to the 12 Apostles. It started to rain, but was still able to get
lovely shots, next stop was Gorge, took a photo and then headed back to bus, did not walk down to
beach (story of sailor and eve survivor or a ship wreck); then drove onto London Bridge, not just called
London. Did not get out of bus. Drove through the Grampians. Watched video presentation of
aboriginal culture at Bramburk. Lunched at picnic stop – picnic stop have electric barbeque machines,
and sinks and toilet facilities, this one also had a pool , but this was not open. Stayed at Hallows Gap -
Ned’s Beds. Kangroo’s just grazing on people’s lawn. Dinner was taco’s – soft shelled flour tortillas’ with
ground beef, with your choice of dressings, onions, cheese, carrots, lettuce, avocado (guacamole)
mushrooms, tomatoes, sour cream, cucumbers. Played seven’s with Swedish girl, Steph, and german girl
(chantel), then played new game with Alexander (part of the Norwegian couple) game was called idiot. It
was a little complicated but it involved a little strategy, so this was good. Basically separate the deck, so
you would only have cards from 6 and higher, then everyone is dealt six cards, then a card is over turned
and this becomes trumph, placed to the bottom of deck face up. Went to bed at 10:30

Thursday 9th December –woke up at 4:00 played manual game on solitaire and free cell at 6 had a bath
and then had two scones and tea for breakfast. Today we will do the climb in Hollows gap, it is a little
dangerous and normally takes about two hours. We are only able to do the climb because there was no
rain. If there had been rain, the climb would have been cancelled. We made it to the top Less two
person – Steph has asthma and did think she would be able to keep up, also Norwegian girl stopped part
way up- it is a little dangerous and there is the possibility of sliding and falling. Found out that Canadian
girl from Ottawa name is Jay. The view was breathtaking, we had to climb rocks, slide through low
caves, all maintaining three points of contact, as per guide Georgette, normally if not followed could
result in broken legs and ankles. Got back on the bus, next stop was xxxx, walked took photos and
hopped back on the bus. Then there was the 500K drive into Adelaide, South Australia. Go in around
4:30 ( south Australia is 20 minutes behind – time difference) we had to ditch all fruit stuff before
crossing over to south Australia). We were dropped off. My hotel was the Rockford – Adelaide and it
was fabulous. Free wifi, free breakfast and my room was huge, jet tub plus separate shower, 42 inch
screen. It was lovely. I then went for a walk around the city. I was meaning to catch the free bus that
circles the city, but I did not feel like waiting around. Walked to Rundell Mall and then had KFC – original
piece, 3 wicked wings and seven up (they did not have water) all for 9.60.
10th Friday December 2010. Had a great breakfast, bacon, eggs, sausage, grilled tomatoes on toast with
orange flavored tea on way out had a blueberry muffin. Every thing was great the bacon was big, tasty
and not fatty. Also available were English muffins, ceral, croissants, and coffee, capucinno, apple, orange
and pineapple drinks, milk, fruit grilled mushrooms, poached eggs. Wanted to do the temptation sailing,
but the weather was bad, then decided to do the adventure kayaking but that was not available until
Saturday, so I walked to Adelaide zoo and met the pandas. Had left luggage in storage. Walked back had
receptionist call a cab. Adelaide favorite city, clean, wide open spaces, for runners, bikers, paddle
boaters. It was really nice. Flew Virgin Blue, flight was good arrived in Sydney, caught the airport link
train, 15 minutes and 15 dollars. George street was right around the corner. Checked into the
RussellHotel. Then went for a walk. Russell Hotel is in the heart of the rocks. There were street vendors,
purchased ad meal from them and then walked over the bridge and then returned. Stopped at the hotel,
then went back out. Toured the warf and the opera house. Downtown Sydney bars and restaurants
were packed with people. Walked by opera house, they were setting up a set for Oprah’s visit
downunder.

Saturday 11th December 2010. Leisurely morning. Got up around 7:30 to prepare for the day, sorted out
laundry to be sent for cleaning and then headed down stairs for complimentary breakfast which
consisted of cereal fresh fruits, Danishes, croissants, various breads and jams, and juices. I had a bowl of
rice crispies followed by two slice of raisan bread with butter and apricot jam and English breakfast tea.
The raisin bread with butter and jam was delicious. Next I took a leisurely stroll over to the government
grounds and the entrance to the botanical gardens. I took a few photos opts at Mrs. Macquire’s chair
and the viewpoint with the opera house and the harbor bridge in the background. I then walked back to
Circular Quay in time to catch the 10:30 ferry to Manly. The ferry is cost is $13.20 roundtrip. I think this
is the best deal in town. Just the views/scenery from the ferry ride (which takes about half an hour) is
gorgeous/ very scenic, very photo friendly, however, my battery was running low ( I had forgot to charge
it the night before, when I use the video feature, it drains the battery faster). Arrived in Manly took the
short stroll down corso road to Manly beach. I had my swimsuit on under my clothes in case I wanted to
go for a dip. However, the water looked a little cold. The weather is kind of funny, if you are standing in
out of the shade, the sun is shinning on you and you will feel warm, however, if you are under a tree,
the weather can feel quite cool and there was a breeze over the water. I saw a lady in wetsuit and her
teeth were chattering, so I decided not to test the water. I then headed back along corso, stopped and
bought a pizza $4.00 a slice (this is a good deal) and a bottle of water, half eaten the pizza fell, I then
stopped at another shop and bought a banana (one banana $1.50) Expensive. Sat and waited for the
12:15 ferry back to Sydney harbour. The harbour was busy with sailing sloops, family and friends out for
the weekend. My next stop was to be bondi beach, but I was not in the mood for the water, so I decided
to skip that and move to the next Item on my list which was to go shopping at Paddy and Hay street
Market. Stopped at the hotel to charge my camera. And then I shopped and I shopped. This place is
great and prices are below the prices of the stores on the rocks. The Kangroo paw bottle opener cost
$22 in Paddy’s and $32 in stores on the rocks. I had walked down to Paddy’s, on the way I stopped and
bought a cupcake (small cupcake $3.80) it was red velvet, it was expensive but good. I am starting to just
roll with the prices here. Finished at Paddy’s and walked back, of course, I got lost a bit, realized I was
walking down the wrong street, then got back on track. Stopped at another store on way back, a little
upscale and bought a few more items/potential keepers or gifts , not sure yet. Was also looking for a
piece of opal jewelry for myself. I’m not big on jewelry and normally only wear earrings. However, I saw
something, I think mom would like and got that for her $245 with 20% discount. Nothing in my budget
really caught my fancy, the one I really like cost $799 and even with a 20% discount, I’m not spending
that kind of money. Headed back to the hotel by then my feet were killing me and I was extremely tired.
Got my laundry back, repacked my luggage. I now had a whole bag of souvenirs. I rested for a bit, I had
gotten back just before 5:00 pm (so from 1:30 to 4:30, I was walking and shopping – felt like more
walking than shopping.) Took a shower around 6:30 and got ready for the evening. I was going to see a
play at the Sydney Opera House. At seven walked along Circular quay – already overflowing with people
out for the night, people getting on and off the ferry, past the opera bar overcrowed as usual to the
Sydney Opera House, went and purchased a ticket for the Grenade, I should have done it last night, it
was almost fully booked out ( only a few seats left). The show started at 8:00 pm, the cost was $85
dollars plus tax which made it $90. Needed to eat so I went down to Studio café, purchased some
fingers sandwiches, a slice of cake and water. The sandwiches had to much vegatebles and not enough
meat, and one on the meat was salmon – raw. Threw that away and ate the cake, it was lovely, moist,
with a chocolate mousse icing, some kind of berry jam layer filling to the bottom, spice cake. It was
good. At 7:50 filed into the theater, there were less than 10 empty seats in the theatre. There were 31
seats in a row, and the rows started from A to Z. So it was a lot of people. The Play was great, it was
funny, commentful, and moving. It revolved around this political consultant that found a grenade in his
house. He was married for the second time to a former nun, who just had his baby (possessed) and he
had a 16 year old daughter. His first wife had cheated on him by sleeping around with all of his friends
and neighbours. The daughter was very smart, but at school she was considered weird, and she wanted
to be cool. The current wife, was younger and a romance novelist. Her publisher wanted her to team up
with an erotic writer named randy savage (black guy,who had done porn, was in the army in
Afghanistan, in the foreign legion and had worked for the UN in Rwanda. The political consultant had an
assistant who had money issues. The daughter had a boy in school she was interested in who wore a
face mask and whose parents had died in car accident (probrably) and thought that was best because he
had a feeling that his parents my have been despicable people. It was great, the sets were amazing, the
acting on spot. The play finished up around 10. Headed back to the hotel and more people were just
coming out for the night.

Sunday 12th December 2010. Took a Blue Mountains Tour with Oz Trails, pickup was 7:55. Tour driver
and guide was Dave. Great tour and Dave was the best. There were about 22 of us in all. Paul, from
England who parents are Polish and was multilingual, and who also was staying at the same hotel as I,
and was a little afraid of heights, and was down on five weeks vacation, had come down for his cousins
wedding in Bryon Bay (which steph had called the drug capital, she was constantly being approached to
buy drugs) and was then heading to Vietnam and laos. There was Klaus, originally from Germany, but
now working in Zurich, Switzerland, There was the two Japanese girls, there was Jenna, from Californina
who was on leave from work and was heading on to Singapore and then London, returning to work in
February; there was the two Irish brothers – the O’donelly’s – they were a little sleep deprived, had
gotten in at 5:00 am that morning (from partying); There was an older couple around their fifties – not
sure where from, there was a French Couple – mid thirties, there was a Japanese guy, Then there was
another younger couple – non English, probrably Swedish or something like that, there was another
single girl, Pia – non English – There was Peter from New York but was of Asian descent, there was an
Indian guy who took a lot of pictures , mainly of himself, he was great, there was a Sora? From Korea,
who had just finished a course of study in Christchurch new Zealand, she said Christchurch is great, and
had a few more days in Sydney and was heading off to Fiji and then home; there was Chin Mae? From
Singapore, who had studied in Melbourne about ten years ago, she had about two more days and then
was heading home; then there was another couple, maybe mid forties, I think, and then there was me.
The scenery was beautiful, the weather was perfect, the driver was witty, informative and very helpful in
pointing out interesting facts and optimal picture shots. We returned to Sydney Harbour by Captain
Cook Cruises ferry. We pulled in about 7:00 pm , I hurried to the hotel, picked up my luggage, went to
the train station at Circular Quay, bought a ticket and caught the train, arrived at the airport by 8:00 pm,
checked in and then waited, the flight had been delayed from 9:00 pm until 9:45, got into Brisbane after
11:30 but because there is a time difference, Sydney and NSW recognized daylight savings time,
queensland and Brisbane does not, the local time was 10:30 pm. As I went to retrieve my luggage, I
heard over the intercom, Tanya Simmons , please report to Luggage blues, I knew this could not be
good. My luggage was left, but they would be sending it first thing tomorrow on the 6:30 flight would
have it dropped to my hotel by 8:30 that same morning. Great, delayed flight, lost luggage. Anyway
caught the airport shuttle to hotel and got there around 11:30. Had the staff direct me to the nearest
7/11 bought some toiletries and then off to bed, I had to be up for 6:45 am tour the following day to
Frazer Island.

Monday, 13th December 2010. Got up took a shower, luckily I had kept swim wear in my backpack, so
put those on, put on my jeans and a spare shirt and headed off to Brisbane Transit Centre, which was
around the corner and about a block and a half away). Was picked up by tour driver Mick, in a Toyota,
4x4 land cruiser, there were two Japanese girls already there, there would be seven of us in total plus
our guide Mick. Mick was a former swimmer and also worked at the Underwater Aquarium, he was
finishing up his double major in tourism and some environmental, geographical studies. Mick was very
informative and funny ( look up song “Tears of a rapper” by a new Zealand group, it was too funny. We
were joined by two other couples both nor English speaking countries, one couple now lived in Australia
and were showing their friends on vacation around. It was a nice group, and there were plenty of toilet
trips along the way. We picked them up in Noosa. We then drove to rainbow bay and took the ferry over
to Frazer Island. We drove along 75-mile beach, it was amazing. The surf, driving along in a 4x4 with the
wind blowing, making tracks on the sand, fjording streams that are run off from fresh water creeks that
meet the ocean, it was great, we then headed in land to some of the rain forest and then lake mckenzie,
where we had a picnic lunch – sandwich wraps and cookies, it was good. I went in to lake mckenzie, it
was not cold or too hot it was refreshing, some water got into my mouth and it was so fresh, I drank
some more. It was beautiful and clear, and clean and refreshing, better than aquapure. I asked mick if it
was okay to drink the water, he said he didn’t because of all the suntan from person and kids might have
“gone” in the water, but if it didn’t make sick, I would probrably be fine. The trip was definetly worth it.
We then back in to rain forest, it was great – the trees, the creeks. Saw fresh water eels in the creek, say
some iguanas fighting at the picnic sight, it was a lovely day. We then headed back out on to 75 mile
long beach and caught the ferry back. We dropped off the couples back in Noosa, and then I was
dropped back in Brisbane, the girls were going to the gold coast. I said farewell around 8:00, then
stopped into the Groove for a late dinner – Had Moroccan Lamb with sweet potato and a hot chocolate ,
total $31.94 – it was okay, not spicy enough for me. Then I walked back to the hotel. My luggage had
arrived. Went next door to a groceries, bought a sim card and minutes for $29, bought some detergent
and then went back to the hotel. I bought an internet card for wireless for $10 which gave me 24 hours
of access after activation. Took a shower and sorted clothes for the wash in the morning. Checked my
itinenary and saw that my flight was for 9:40 am and not 1:40 as I had thought. Went to bed.

Tuesday 14th December caught flight to Cairns, got in and called the courtesy van from the hotel. Cairns
is hot, very hot. Arrived at the Colonial Cairns Hotel. Checked in and immediately caught the hotel
shuttle to the downtown esplanade area, walked around, bought a new unlocked cell phone. Cairns is
hot, very hot. Did a little shopping, I need to stop, I don’t have any more space in my bags. I know where
all the black people are, they are in Cairns. I see a lot to the native aboriginal people from the Yjindi
tribe. There look is very distinctive. Went to McDonalds and ordered a Mcbites (little chicken nuggets)
and fries (mc Donald fries are the best) and a mighty burger (pure angus beef). This is in addition to the
12pk donuts I bought at Woolsworth. Headed back to the hotel and watched some tv. I have another
day before tour starts.

Wednesday, 15th December is a leisurely day. Had morning tea with some donuts, caught the hotel
shuttle into Cairns esplanade area, window shopped, stopped at McDonalds – those fries are delicious.
Surfed the net (free wi-fi), walked the esplanade, headed back to the hotel to read and relax and watch
a little tv. Tomorrow is the official start to my islands and rainforest tour.

Thursday 16th December found out my tour had actually kicked off last night with a pub crawl – not sorry
I missed it. Met John the tour manager and Frank the Driver along with 18 other conitikiers.
Coincidentally joining me on this tour was Jay, the Canadian from the Great Ocean Road tour. I think I
got it down, Kesley, Glenyis Jay and Ann from different parts of Canada; Carolyn, Steph and John, Brian,
and another couple age 22 from Ohio (Vicki and Josh), another economist from California (Suzie), Sarah
and Steve from England, Celeste and Julien from South Africa, Selena from Switzerland, Nikki from
Melbourne, Sharon from Ireland. I can’t believe recalled their names a whole day later. There are about
four other accountants, former banker, a research assistant, teacher, surveyor, a couple of recent
college graduate and one high school graduate. We loaded the bus and headed for a two day stay in the
Daintree national forest. The tour kicked off with the tour song – Sex on the Radio’ by Good Charlotte.
We drove into port douglas where he had some about an 1 hour and three quarters. Some persons went
down to the beach, but I decided to window shop. Actually bought a dress (reasonalbly priced $30 – I
was surprised), bought some Bushman’s deet extra strength (80% with sunscreen), a sandwich to take
on the bus and then sat down for some chicken strips with lime anoli (like tartar sauce). Strolled around
a bit and was headed down to the beach when I saw the time. Headed back to the bus, we were on
Contiki time – if you’re not there on time, they will leave you. By the way Julien was 12 minutes late.
We then drove down to Mossam’s Gorge (with a few scenic stops on the way). We changed into our
swimmers (bathing suits for those not in the know) and walked about five minutes down a rainforest
trail to Mossam’s Gorge. I got in the water, yo. And it was cold. It was hot, I mean turning be real black
hot, but the water was cold. I swam around a bit but the current was very strong, so did not try to swim
upstream, or should I say I tried but it was difficult and I wasn’t for that. We just hanged out eating,
talking, getting to know who’s who. Interesting group. I think I’m the oldest, the next older ones are
Julien and Ann who are 29. Except for Frank (our French Driver, lived in Australia for 15 years but still
has that heavy accent) who must be in his forties, I’m the oldest. NOoooh. The group is great fun and I
wish it would stay this size, but John tells me that when we head back to Cairns we will be adding about
30 more, a full bus load of 49 stronger – oh my goodness. I’ll worry about that when it happens. After
Mossam’s Gorge we made a quick stop to the store and the bottle shop ( Aussie name for Liquor Store),
the travellers loaded up on goon (wine in a box) and Nikki and Selena bought a case of Corona. I’m
thinking that’s a bit much for two days, but each to his own. We drove another thirty minutes until we
got to barge crossing. We will crossing over the daintree forest to the ‘dark side’ - cape tribulation. Cape
tribulation does not run on state electricity, the resorts ( I think about 3 ) and the only bar on the island
uses generators. We got in about four were shown our rooms. Hey people I’m moving up, no hut on the
beach for me, Just a shack in the rainforest – A shack with A/C , electricity, attached bath, iron and
ironing board because off course we don’t want to be all crush and mashed up in the forest. I dropped
my stuff and headed back to reception, I was off on a sunset sea kayaking tour at 4:30. Got to reception
and saw the other three guys on the tour had ‘swimmers’ on, dashed back to my little forest retreat,
through on my swim tights, a swim top and a rash guard and jogged back to reception. We were off,
picked up another 3 girls and 1 guy from another hotel. I told Pete our sea kayak tour operator that I had
not done this before and would like to be in a double kayak with someone. We lifted our kayaks down
to the beach. Two of the girls had decided ride double as well; and Frank , the guy we picked up, said he
would kayak with me. It was beautiful. I am glad I did this, I could actually see in the water, the reefs,
coral, fishes, we saw some big baramundi (yellow tail snapper) a few turtles, meanly when they popped
out of the water. We did a twenty minute paddle around a headland, and then leisurely paddled around
a bay to spot marine life. It was exhilarating and I wasn’t too bad with the oars. Frank was a trip. He said
he was from Norway, I was like that’s not a Norwegian name. It was his a short version of his French
name “Francois”. His mother was French. Actually his mother’s parents were from Spain but had moved
to France. So he had a French name, a Spanish name and a Norwegian Name – He told me his full name,
but calling him Frank was easier. His dad is a Norwegian Farmer and Frank has another brother;
neither him or his brother wanted to be Farmer. He is twenty-eight and is travelling before settling
down. Between hitting on me (because he loves black women) and telling me about his travels and
family life, we able to successful maneuver our craft (sea kayak). We had a great time, we even had
snacks out in the water, chocolate cupcakes, fresh pinenapple and cordial. I had a blast. The sunset was
wonderful, the saltwater, the birds in the forest making music, a multilingual younger guy hitting on me,
it was great fun. We out for just over two hours and got back to land at about 7:10 (ten past 7). Frank
told me his name again (I told him don’t bother I won’t remember), wanted to know what I was doing
later – I had plans with the group; but I did give him my name and told him to look me up on facebook,
I’ll add him as a friend. Got Back to our resort about 7:20 rushed off to take a shower dinner was at 7:30.
Was late, and got lost trying to find the right path down to the restaurant, (it was dark and some of the
lights were out). Dinner was various salads and vegetables (which I ignored) pasta dish with beef,
another pasta type dish ( I skipped, had two much vegetables) and a selection of pizzas, along with
desserts. One of the Desserts included the jack fruit which I tasted – it was not for me. The group
decided on some drinking game (apparently you have drink everything with your left hand – or none
dominant hand – if not you had to chug down a drink. I declined participation. Afterwards we headed to
the only little hangout joint on cape tribulation – PK’s. There were Pool tables, inside and outside
seating areas. Earlier I had asked our tour manager – John what beer Australians drink – Apparently it’s
not Forster’s. Forster’s is not made or sold in Australia. The Beer he said most Australians drink is VB
(stands for Victoria’s Bitters) but everyone (himself included) calls it Very Bad, as in very bad beer. So
you know that’s what I had to order. VB – Australian for Beer. It was very bitter and very bad. We shot
some pool, or should I say I watched them shoot some pool. At about 10:30, the econimist from Cali,
wanted some company on her walk back to the resort, so I volunteered (generous of me, right). No, it
had been a long day, that sea kayaking is work. Tomorrow is another full day, swimming in the morning,
zipping lining in the afternoon.

Friday 17th December 2010. This morning we drove through the rainforest and Frank gave us a guided
tour we then went to Emmagen Creek for a swim. Afterwards we went to Cape Tribulation beach, no
swimming is allowed unless you wear a stinger suit. This is where the rainforest reach the reef. You
have the wet tropics and you have the outer fringe of the great barrier reef. Lunch was at PK ‘s, I had a
hamburger with fries. Afterwards we went back to the resort we were to leave at 2:30 for the Jungle
Surfing (zip lining) in the forest. This forest is said to be the oldest forest in the world. There were six
platforms at various heights. Our guides were Phil, Lee and Peter (who I had done sea kayaking with the
day before). We got back at around 5:00 pm. Dinner was for 7:00 pm, I laid down for a while and took a
nap, when I woke up it was 7: 25, I just threw on some clothes and went down to dinner. Dinner was
steak, chicken, some other type of beef, salads, breads. After dinner, some of the crew went down to
PK’s pub, but me and few of the other girls went to the common lounge area in the resort and played
gin rummy and have a little girl talk, I turned in at 10:30 pm.

Saturday 18th December 2010. We returned to Cairns with a few stops on the way ( stopped at view
lookout spot where we could the island/area where Steve Erwin died, we also stopped at a market in
Mossman. WE got back to Cairns Colonial around 11:00 a.m. Today we will be joined by 30 new
contikiers. For two hours we lounged around the pool ordered lunch and developed code words to
describe cute guys ( they are to be called Christmas trees, and we can discuss their ornaments) – it was
hilarious. At 1:00 we hopped on the bus to to Karunda wild life and culture centre. We were a full bus of
49 strong. We had also upgraded the bus. I was able to hold a koala. Her name was Kiah and she was 4
½ to 5 years old. Her claws were a little sharp, but she was so cute and adorable. I took a photo with the
koala and then went to watch aboriginal dances. I was also able to practice throwing the boomerang,
still haven’t gotten the hang of it. You are only able to hold koala in Queensland, in other parts of
Australia, you can stand beside them but you cannot hold them. So this was a great opportunity. I loved
it. They really are adorable. We headed back to the hotel and got back around 3:30 pm, dinner is to be
at 7:30 at Woolsheds. Tomorrow will be rafting of the Tully river (6:30 am) and tomorrow night will be
the pub crawl – I think I will skip this.

Sunday 19th December 2010. Got up early we have a 6:30am departure for rafting. There are 28 of us off
to Tully River with Raging Thunder Rafting company. This was the best day ever. Rafting is the bomb. We
rode rapids, we jumped out of the rafts and floated down river, we jumped from a boulder over 12 feet
high into the river, we intentionally turned the boat over twice. It was great. I love it. We got back at
around 5:00 pm. We travelled about 10 kilometers on the river and spent about 4 hours on the river.
Lunch of hamburgers, sausages, fruits, and drinks were provided. Tonight I’ve decided to go out on the
pub crawl. It is $20, includes a meal and a free drink four different establishments, but there will also be
other games. We’ll see. Went to The Vibe and also the Woolshed ducked out around 11:00 pm, they
still had two more stops that night (Irish Pub and Gilligan’s?). It was the same old music played at both
places (some Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry, Barbara Streisand). I don’t get it…

Monday 20th December 2010. This really was the best day ever, we boarded the bus at 7:45 and headed
down to the harbour. We would be sailing on Reef Magic. The boat left the harbour at 8:30 a.m. The
majority of the contikers had elected to do the reef optional activity. It took about 90 minutes for the
Reef Magic to reach the Marine World Docking Station. They provided complimentary coffee and tea
and muffins and cake. The dive instructors went through all the safety precautions, we signed our
release forms. The ninety minute trip was exhilarating, altbough a good portion of my group took a nap.
Those who were doing additional optional activities at the reef were briefed and provided start times for
their activities. I would be doing the helicopter ride over the reefs as well as intro scuba dive. Scuba
dives were grouped in teams of four. My ride was scheduled for 11:50 and my dive for 12:00. We had
gotten to the reef around 10:30; so I went for a snorkel on the reefs. Fins and snorkel gear was provided,
along with life jackets, noodles, rings and other flotation devices. Those notdoing the scuba dives could
also pay an additional $5 dollars to rent the lycra or wetsuits. Went to get a life vest kind of late and
could not find one that fitted, either too small (kid size) or Large and XL left. So I went in without a vest,
nor did I use any other flotation devices. It was a little scary but great. It was vast and glorious. I got
turned around a little bit (no sense of direction) but eventual found the direction of the boat and headed
back. I had bought a reusable waterproof camera and took a few snaps ( I hope it comes out). Took a
rest and then headed back out for a second time, this time more confident. I was proud of myself and
silently and greatly fully thanking Fran (Custom Aquatics), my swim instructor. It felt like she had
liberated me from fear of the deep to a place where I was confident in my abilities. Thank you Fran. I
returned back to the boat about 11:30, to dry off for my chopper ride. I had ridden a helicopter before in
South America over Igassu Falls, but flying in one is always exciting. This did not disappoint the pilot
flew, low so we could spot turtles and other creatures on the reef and then took us higher so we could
see the vastness of it all. It was Fabulous. Loved it. Returned to helipad and was ferried over to the main
Marine World Station, changed quickly back into my lycra suit and then went to the dive station. I had
missed my dive team time, So a dive instructor took me done alone. Scuba is cool. I remembered the
rules from our earlier instructions (Rule #1 – Always Breathe. Rule#2 Go Slow) The instructor had was
linked or looped through mines, and she would frequently do the okay sign to make sure everything was
going okay. A few times she let me go but was in easy reach. It was great, after about 20 minutes I
indicated to her that I wanted to head back up – I was tired. The Scuba was amazing, exhilarating,
fantastic. The shapes of the coral, the colors, the fishes. It was great. There were other dives, where
they would take you out further, there were also dives for those who were certified. Reef Magic
company also had the helmet walk, and snorkeling safaris (all additional paid activities). Included in the
original package are snorkeling gear, glass bottom excursions and submersible excursions from the main
station. We headed back at 3:30 pm. You spend about 5 hours out at the reef. We arrived back in port
at 5:00 pm. Tonight is a free night. I used the guest laundry at the resort to wash and then I decided I
would try Outback Jacks. Outback Jacks is known mainly for their steaks, but they also serve crocodile
and kangaroo dishes. I had the Sticky Dundee (Something Different) and garlic bread. The Sticky Dundee
is crocodile and kangaroo meat on a stick served with a chipotle like sauce (hot and a little sweet). The
waiter mentioned that the crocodile is like a cross between a chicken and fish but a little gamey ( and it
was) and a little bland, but with the sauce it was good. The kangaroo is like lamb but not as intense a
flavor. I also dipped this in the sauce and it was really good. The garlic bread was wonderful ( you know I
like bread). Headed back to the hotel. Tomorrow is an early start with a long drive.

Tuesday 21st December 2010. Woke up around 4:30, showered and did final pack and check of luggage
and then went into the guest lounge area around 5:00 am to use up the rest of my internet minutes.
We boarded the bus at 6:00 am and were on our way. Today would be a long drive to the Whitsundays
and daydream island. We would be making little pit stops along the way and also spend a few hours in
Airlee Beach, at least that was the plan. However that did not work out. At about around noon our
driver pulled over. There was a split in the radio hose. This caused an almost two hour delay as he
repaired it (He’s a magician – Thank’s Ralph). We just drove through Airlee and did not have time to
stop. We got into Prosperine at 4:30 and had to immediately split. The group 28 that would be sailing
the Whit Sunday Island for 2 days left to meet the crew - Prosail personnel. The remainder contikiers
would be staying on Daydream island for those two nights. The 27 contikiers and myself were split into
two groups (there was two boats). My group of 13 went on the Hammer (captained by Mico and crewed
by Brennen and Mark ( whose identical twin Dan – crewed on the other boat the Condor. We set sail
immediately after all safety instructions had been taken care of. The sky was slightly overcast with
waves, but it was all good. At around 6:30 we were served a cheese and dip platter with various
crackers. Some of us also helped – pull up the sail and grinding when tacking was needed. Being on the
water was exhiliarating, we were getting a little wet from the waves and the light spry – but it was all
good it reminded me of home. Loved it. We sailed for maybe an 1 1\2 and pulled up into a little inlet
where we spent the night. Dinner (at 8:00 pm) was Marinated chicken (very good), mash potatoes,
cooked vegetables, salads, and bread with butter. Dessert was fruit cake and tea, coffee or milo. It was
better than I expected. At dinner and after dinner, there were drinks and conversation as we got to this
group we were with better. We started heading to bed at 10:30. I went in at around 11:00, I left about
four persons up, I think they said they went to bed about 12.

Wednesday 22nd December 2010. I woke up around 5:00 and went on the deck and did crossword
puzzles. It’s bright/light at 5:00 am over here. At about 6:45 persons started rousing, breakfast was
shortly after 7:00 – cereal, fruit salad, choice of wheat or white with either butter, butter substitute,
orange marlade, vegemite, nutella, peanut butter, honey etc.., tea, coffee or milo. After breakfast we set
sail out of the inlet, the sky was again a little gray and overcast , we would be heading to Whitehaven
beach today (named 3rd best beach in the world by …..) and then snorkeling or diving later. By the time
we sailed/raced with the other yacht to Whitehaven the sun had peeked out a bit. I think it was perfect,
not to much sun and a slight breeze. White Haven beach in the Whitsundays is part of the Whitsundays
National Park. The only you are supposed to take are memories and leave footprints. After walking to
the lookout point to take pictures, we headed down to beach. We dropped our stuff on the beach and
headed down to the water. We were all provided with stinger suits, due to jelly fish. We just played
around catching waves and talking. Walking in the shallows and sand bar area we saw sand sharks (they
were a about 2 feet long and green) and plenty of sting rays. I almost stepped on one. We got to White
haven about 11:00 and would be leaving at 1:00. At around the 11:45 the sun came out in full force,
while the others went to lay on the beach to soak up the rays. I took a few more photos and headed
back for the water. At about 12:50 we gathered our stuff together. The sand on Whitehaven is the
result of volcano activity and is very fine and very corrosive. We were instructed to carefully wash the
sand off our feet, stinger suit and body before boarding the dinghy (inflatable kind) to the big boat. After
leaving White haven we sailed for maybe another 1 hour and came to an inlet area around I think
Moore’s island? Here we anchored off and the dinghy took us in closer to be dropped off to snorkel the
reefs. This was fantastic, the corals, the fish, the marine life same more vibrant than the one in Cairns. It
was all so close and fantastic. After about 10 minutes I headed for the dinghy (and Mark). I was a little
tired. He threw me a noodle and I took off again. This was even better. After a few more minutes, I
headed back to the boat, had Mark pull be in for about five minutes of rest, then jumped back out again.
I can’t say enough on how beautiful it was out there. It was truly amazing, but I didn’t have any film left
in my underwater camera. I am going to have to ask one of the contikiers to send be some underwater
photos. After another 10 minutes I headed back to the dinghy I was more than tired. A few others got in
as well. Once out the water, we started to get a little cold, so Mark took us back to the yacht, crew from
our sister yacht watched the snorkelers. I want to thank Fran and Custom Aquatics, because if it wasn’t
for them – I would not have been able to do. The coral system was truly beautiful. I would never have
gone in water which was so deep, and if they had not taken me out snorkeling, I probably would not
have the guts to have swam in anything but the pool. Thank you Fran. I was able to get the most and
make the most of my journey/vacation . I think this is the most perfect day ever. Later that afternoon we
had nachos with salsa, sour cream (basically chips and dip) it was good. What I found amazing was piece
of foil flew off the boat and Brennen – one the crew, took the dinghy over and retrieved it. I just love
Australians respect for their land and waters. Dinner that evening was steak, potato salad, salads, bread
and butter. During and after dinner, contikiers had their cocktails. After the crew had washed up, they
joined us on deck. It was great, mark told us how he was kicked off day dream island, Brennen told baby
jokes (awful, but really funny), riddles, pranks played; even Mico joined in. It was F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C. – I
think all Australians must have been originally from Ireland – they kissed the blarney stone. They can
talks so much crap and are so entertaining. I have yet to meet one boring or surly guide. Everyone
started heading in at 11:00 pm. But the 3 south Africans and 1 Canadian started a drinking game. The
South Africans called it Kings. It was truly a drinking game. Basically you would spread the deck in a ring
or circle. Then pick a card – each card would have been assigned an activity – e.g. (Ace – set rules; 2 –
two for you (which means if you pulled a two you can tell someone to drink to sips) 3- three for me –
means that you drink 3 sips; -4 –for whores (all the females take a sip) 5 – toilet (means that this is your
going to the toilet card , which someone can buy from you buying drinking a certain amount 6 - for dicks
(all the guys would drink) 7- means that you go around in a circle counting but can not say a multiple of
seven or any word that has seven in it you have to substitute that with a word and then reverse
direction of counting ; 8 – means to nominate – you nominate one person to take a sip; 9 – you have to
rap/rhyme – you start one line of the rhyme and the next person adds a rhyming line and then the next.
What can do is end with a word that doesn’t rhyme with anything (silver, purple, orange), 10 is
categorize – You pick a category (for instance tree/ jeans etc. and the you go around naming trees or
brand name jeans until some misses and then they drink; Jack – the last one to say hi jack has to drink;
Queens – Queens of thumbs – If you get a queen you; you use your thumb in a fairly obvious way and
the others have to follow suit. The last person to do so has to drink. You are the queen of thumbs until
someone else pulls a Queen and then they become the Queen of thumbs. When you pull the king you
pour a little of your drink into the cup in the middle of the cards. The Person with the last king has drink
the concoction that has accumulated in the cup. Truly a drinking game. I did not participate because I
was not and did not want to drink, but it was fun to watch. I headed in at 11:45 and left them playing. It
was a very good day. Tomorrow we will snorkel in the morning and then around noon we will be
heading and dropped to daydream island to meet with our tour members.

Thursday 23rd December 2010. This morning we set sail for another inlet to get in our last snorkel or
dive. We arrived at the inlet around 8:30. I went in for another snorkel. The coral was good, but as great
as yesterday, but this area had more colorful fish. Brendan did a fish feed and there were some huge fish
that showed up some about a meter long (I’m taken to think in meters now). I stayed in the water about
half an hour and then some of us got out around 9:00 and headed back to the main boat. The weather
was wonderful, sunny with a light breeze. We then sailed for about 2 hours and anchored off of
Daydream Island where we had lunch. At around 12:30 we headed to Daydream Island to join the rest
of our group, as we were we greeted by a guest service staff with seashell necklaces, shortly after we
docked the dinghy to the island, the heavens opened up with rain. We made a dash for main reception
lounge. We were given our room assignments. I headed up, took a shower and went to bed. I had a
slight headache (maybe due to dehydration). I woke back up around 5:00. The pool party is to start at
6:30. This is my last night and I gotta go out with a bang. It rained, so no pool party, party held at the fish
bowl restaurant. I got there late after 7:00 , ate, drank a large diaquari and even danced (kinda) to one
song, chatted with my new crew from the sailboat and then Headed in at around 11:00 pm. I had to
wash. Washed and then hopped into bed shortly after 12:30. I don’t leave until 10 AM tomorrow.

Friday 24th December and 25th December – Travel Day. Departed day dream island by ferry to the
mainland Airlee Beach. Then hopped a bus – 45minutes to the airport in prosperine. Hopped a flight
from prosperine to Brisbane. Then flew from Brisbane in to Auckland. Got into Auckland around 1:30 am
Christmas Day. Had to wait for the domestic airport to open at 5:30 am. Caught the 6:10 flight to
Christchurch and was able to check in early to my hotel (Holiday Inn on Avon) at 9:15. My contiki leader
had not arrived as yet and would not be arriving until this afternoon. Stayed in bed all day ordering room
service, reading and surfing the internet. Later the afternoon, went down and checked and saw that a
contiki notice was posted for tomorrow morning meeting at 7:30 am. Went back to my room and
watched some more tv. Could not figure out why nothing was planned for today. Woke up around 2:00
am in the morning the room was shaking and the current had goned off. Was still a little sleepy so did
not understand the significance – just rolled back over and went to bed. (4.9 and 5 kilometers deep)

Sunday 26th December. Went to breakfast and then joined the contiki meeting in the lobby. There was
another little earthquake only 3.8 or so. I was not on this tour which started today. My group was at
another hotel. There had been some mixup with the hotel bookings. The tour manager – Barnaby
contacted the other guide and they came and picked us up. So yesterday, while I was laying in my room
wondering what was going on, my real tour group was having a Christmas dinner and partying.
Whatever…… After we were picked up (there were four of us that got mixed up), we drove through
Christchurch and stopped in cathedral square and walked around for a bit and then hopped back on the
bus we will be driving to Franz Josef Glacier today. We got into Franz Josef and went to the hot pools –
pools of verying temperature 36 degrees, 38 degrees and 40 degrees. We then went to dinner at the
hotel restaurant and stayed around for drinks.

Monday 27th December. Franz Josef was a wash today. It was raining too much so we tried Fox Glacier,
but the rain had also cancelled all hikes to that glaciers. So Saul our guide said we drive directly too
Queenstown today. On our way to Queenstown we would stop at the kawura bridge and bungy jump
(for all those who had signed up). I had signed up. Let’s just say I did the jump. It is finished the battle is
over – just watch the tape. That night we had dinner at Skyline Restaurant. Queenstown was raining and
overcast and we were not able to see the landscape and the beautiful vistas. There was a heavy mist.
We went up to the Skyline Restaurant by cable car (they call it a Gondola). Dinner was buffet style and I
hurt myself. My first plate was jasmine rice with rogan josh, some type of curry chicken, some prawns in
penne type pasta dish, and fish in a cream sauce. My next plate was sliced ham, prawns in pesto sauce
and herb roasted potatoes. For desert I had a chocolate cake and a little cupcake type tart. I thought it
was a cupcake/muffin but when I bit into it – it was filled with fruit compote of some sort – berries,
sultanta, etc. It was good. I also had a bottle of Archer’s Peach Snaps to wash it down. Afterwards I
headed home with maybe 10 or so, and the rest of the troup headed out to Buffaloes Bar. Apparently
the music and dancing was great.

Tuesday 28th December. We were suppose to go sky diving this morning but it was still overcast. So I had
Saul rearrange my schedule so I could do Quad biking in the morning and Lake View Trail in the
Afternoon. The Quad Biking was great, however I must admit I only spent 15 – 20 minutes on the biking
driving through the practices drills so they can gage our skill level. I was not deemed fit to drive, I could
not control masterfully and the route we would be taking had serious drops of 500 feet or more. I drove
behind the lead instructor (Jim – Nomad Safaris). Fran took 2 others off on a separate easier trail. Jim
took the three riders and me riding pillion behind up into the hills (really mountains). We were a ton of
gear – overpants and jackets, helmets, gloves, penguin gloves , extra socks and boots/galoshes. When
we went up into the mountains my fingers started to get wet even though it had stopped raining. It was
just that we were so high up the mist/dew was damping these thick gloves and freezing my fingers, I had
to put on my penguin gloves. We climbed steadily up the mountains then were able to drive level at the
top for a ways. Jim mentioned that were more than 900 meters above sea level. The Lake below is 300
meters above sea level and the mountains were more than 600 meters higher. The views were amazing.
We then met back up with the other riders for tea/coffee and biscuits and fruit cake. I did not drink,
because there were no bathrooms around. On the trek was Clyde from my Contiki Group (Originally
from China but living in Sydney, Australia), an indian couple, an another couple from Paris (I first thought
they were father and daughter, but they weren’t). The couple handle the quad machine fantastically.
After about an hour and twenty minutes riding we returned back to the shed. We were then dropped off
in town. Clyde and I then hung around to wait for our Trail walk. The Lake View Trail Walk with Justin
was invigorating, refreshing. After being cooped up on the bus for long periods of time this was a nice
stretch of the legs. As soon as we began our journey the sun started to shine and the rain stopped. The
guide Justin made sure we had trail mix (their special blend), water, sensible shoes, he gave me a rain
coat and back pack to carry the water and trail mix. We actually walked for over two hours. The tour
was three hours - there was pickup, stops along the way for describe flora and what could be found
here, the history of mining and original mining hut and all about Sam Summers. This was a really nice
walk. Today we had dinner at winnie’s – great fries, great warm bread, and a lot of gourmet type pizzas.
This was an included dinner and it was good. We then headed to Cowboy’s bar, where I rode a bronco,
played darts and was winning (the other players were just really bad). We then left there, the group was
headed for Minus 25 bar – ice sculptures, drinks serviced in ice glass and you had to wear a special coat,
Entrance fee was $25 and I was not paying that –including one free drink. NO thank you. I sat with Clyde
and a few others in the bar across from Minus 5 and played pool with an Asian couple (Clyde and I
against them) and then Clyde and I. I left around 10:50 and headed back to the hotel. Clyde went to
Minus 25. Also had the Fernburger with Brie chees and as our guide Saul said – It blew my mind. It was
really good.

Wednesday 29th December, 2010. Went Jetboating on the ShotOver river. My face froze. It was cold.
Then went Rafting on the Shotover, due to the rain, the river levels were extremely high and we had to
very cautious. We drove up skipper’s canyon to get to the raft launching site, the views were
magnificient. Great views of the Remarkables and canyons. It was really beyond amazing. After rafting
went Canyon swinging – just watch the video – nuff said. Had to wash tonight as we will be on the boat
headed to Milford sound right now.

I entitled this Australia – Going the distance, because the country is so vast –to see everything you have
to travel great distances and many miles – but it is definitely worth it. You have to go the distance – you
won't regret it. The interesting people you meet, their love for the land, the water and cricket ! It
infuses with a joy of your own. Australia – it’s worth the trip!!!

’m loving Australia.
